Let the title hunt begin!

Some negative words to search for: no, none, nobody, nothing, not, no one, never, can't, don't, won't, couldn't, wouldn't. And of course the negative words in other languages too!

Optional questions:
1. What are you reading for this category?
2. What are your recommendations for this one?

Heather (eveejoystar) | 64 comments I'm going to read Monday's Not Coming by Tiffany D Jackson.

message 3: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3308 comments I may reread my favorite author, Barbara Pym, who wrote No Fond Return of Love.

Other options:
No Name - Wilkie Collins
Nothing to See Here - Kevin Wilson
When No One is Watching - Alyssa Cole
Don't Look Now - Daphne du Maurier
Sleep No More: Six Murderous Tales - P.D. James

message 4: by Thomas (new)

Thomas largely because I need to priorities books I already own Lizzie Didn't Do It!

message 5: by Sam (new)

Sam | 316 comments I think I'm going with Do Not Say We Have Nothing. I began reading it awhile ago and liked it, but I don't think I finished it, so will make a new start with it!

I don't have a ready rec, but a note of caution on one: Hum If You Don’t Know the Words, IMO it was a pretty decent read for most of it but then got very white savior-y in ways I found deeply irritating and also highly improbable.

message 6: by Kate (new)

Kate (caitmoore) | 235 comments Going with the -less suggestion for 'bring it on', Endless Night.

message 8: by Serendipity (new)

Serendipity | 441 comments Just 4 options on my TBR - I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, We are Not Ourselves, I am Not Your Slave and No one Ever Asked. All good options if nothing else shows up.

message 9: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
I had a bunch on my TBR, but I narrowed it down to these five, which are all over my plans so I'll probably end up reading all of them at some point next year.

All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson
I'm Not Dying with You Tonight by Kimberly Jones
Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram
Not So Pure and Simple by Lamar Giles
Monday's Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson

message 10: by Viktoria (new)

Viktoria Valkova | 102 comments I'll probably read Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
My other option is The Unhoneymooners, which I didn't even realized would fit this prompt, but I found it on the Listopia.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
I loved Never Let Me Go! I've read it twice (once last year, and then again this year when my book club picked it).

Robin P | 3960 comments Mod
I'll probably go with Nothing to See Here, which I have on audio.

message 13: by Kristina (last edited Oct 25, 2020 05:21PM) (new)

Kristina | 245 comments I also loved Never Let Me Go!

I don’t usually count subtitles for prompts, but I’m reading Make Something Up: Stories You Can't Unread because it’s been on my TBR the longest out of my options.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

i surprising only had one book from my physical tbr that fit so i'll be reading Neverland by Margot McGovern. i know it's a compound word so i normally wouldn't count it, but it's the only one i have to choose.

i do have Lost in the Never Woods by Aiden Thomas preordered though so i might swap it for that. coincidentally, they're both contemporary peter pan retellings!

message 15: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments How do we feel about -less, are those considered negatives? Like Soulless and the rest of Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Johanne wrote: "How do we feel about -less, are those considered negatives? Like Soulless and the rest of Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series."

that's one of my favourite series! if you can squeeze that in, i'm definitely all for it haha

message 17: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I love them! I've two left in the series. If I don't read them this year, it's a definite contender for 'comfort read' as well.

message 18: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Johanne wrote: "How do we feel about -less, are those considered negatives? Like Soulless and the rest of Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series."

Yes, because it's describing the absence of something, and also yes because I have a lot more "less" books on my TBR than not/never/no etc.

I had pencilled in Nevermoor but when I select in on Goodreads it's not called Nevermoor but The Trials of Morrigan Crow, so that would annoy me if I used it, even though the book has Nevermoor in big writing on it.

Ellie wrote: "I had pencilled in Nevermoor but when I select in on Goodreads it's not called Nevermoor but The Trials of Morrigan Crow, so that would annoy me if I used it, even though the book has Nevermoor in big writing on it."

it's actually called nevermoor: the trials of morrigan crow. the series is all formatted like TITLE: THE [INSERT] OF MORRIGAN CROW so it definitely counts!

Johanne wrote: "I love them! I've two left in the series. If I don't read them this year, it's a definite contender for 'comfort read' as well."

oooh, that's a good idea! i haven't read the spin offs yet and they definitely qualify for comfort reads for me too

message 21: by Anna (new)

Anna (annaik) | 401 comments Looking through my TBR I have come up with the following options for me:

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Tell No Tales by Eva Dolan
Mig äger ingen by Åsa Linderborg Swedish book: ingen translated is no one/nobody
Nej och åter nej by Nina Lykke Swedish book: nej translated is no
Det som aldrig fick ske: Skolattentatet i Trollhättan by Åsa Erlandsson Swedish book: aldrig translated is never. This is a non-fictional book about a school shooting in Sweden

message 22: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments Imo “impossible” is a word with negative connotations. The definition is - not able to occur, exist, or be done. I have several books with impossible in the title so I’ll be using one of those for this prompt.

message 23: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments My two possibilities for this are Never Have I Ever or Never Never.

message 24: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments This is a tough one for me. The only thing I have on my existing TBR is This Coven Won't Break.

I'll really be using this thread to help me uncover some good ones. This is a prompt that seemed easy when I was voting, and now I'm stuck!

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

alicia, i have about a 100 books shelved if that helps!

https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 27: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments I have these on my list:
The Things We Never Said by Susan Elliot Wright
You Don't Know Me by Sara Foster
No Highway by Nevil Shute
Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast
Never Never by Colleen Hoover

However I might also have Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro as an option, if I don't get around to reading it this year. I borrowed it as an ebook from the library a week or so ago, but...it's unopened as yet, with various other books crying out for my attention!

Yes! I should have looked! I've definitely stalked your shelf for BIPOC retellings

message 29: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2285 comments I don't think I'll get to it this year, so I'll probably read Alyssa Cole's new book, When No One is Watching. If I read that this year, then maybe Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe.

I read I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter this year and I really enjoyed it!

I really enjoyed Say Nothing! I would highly recommend. It's a great entry book into the IRA.

haha I actually listened to it as an audiobook, that might also be why I loved it so much. It was quite dreamy.

bahahah I wish I could claim credit for being that insightful, but it's just where it ended up on the list. I love that connection though hahahaha.

message 39: by Wendy (last edited Oct 31, 2020 10:32AM) (new)

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 393 comments This is a surprisingly difficult prompt for me!

I really like the suggestion of Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland mentioned above.

From my TBR, I came up with
Neverwhere
No Exit and Three Other Plays
Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
No Country for Old Men
How Not To Be a Boy

message 40: by Priya (new)

Priya (priyalovesreading) | 3 comments Not without my daughter by Betty Mahmoody

message 41: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments I also count Never Let Me Go as one of my favorites. This year I read Nothing to See Here, which I really loved, too. A few years back I read an excerpt of A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again: Essays and Arguments and found it really funny, so now I'm going back to read the whole book.

The Chapter Conundrum (Stacey) | 43 comments I think this means it's time for me to finally read Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

message 43: by ladymurmur (new)

ladymurmur | 541 comments A recommendation if you're looking for a children's book: Never Tease a Weasel

i was surprised by how little choice i had from my physical tbr. too. i literally only have one!

but i have about 100 options on my goodreads shelf here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list... if anyone needs more ideas. i might need to borrow something from the library.

message 46: by SadieReadsAgain (new)

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 452 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
Everything I Never Wanted to Be by Dina Kucera
2. What are your recommendations for this one?
All the Light We Cannot See, Everything I Never Told You...I got nothing else.

message 47: by Ashley (new)

Ashley White (celadore) | 73 comments I'm finally going to read Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere!

message 48: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (last edited Dec 18, 2020 10:35PM) (new)

Robin P | 3960 comments Mod
This is surprisingly hard. I have a feeling some people are going to list it as their least favorite prompt, and I was the one who suggested it!

Out of over 400 books I own in some format, I only found

Nothing to See Here
My Not So Perfect Life
Nothing But Velvet
Don't Look Back - one of 9 books on GR by different authors with that title!

Another option is words with the prefix "in" where it means "not", -
Invisible Man or The Invisible Man
The Indignities of Being a Woman
The Incredulity of Father Brown

Books I don't own but would like to read include
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
Nothing More Dangerous
The Unhoneymooners
Unsheltered
Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage

message 49: by NancyJ (last edited Dec 18, 2020 11:37PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3532 comments I like the prompt Robin! I wouldn't have thought to include Invisible, Indignities, etc. but it opens up a lot of possibilities.

I have The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue on my phone now.

I really liked:
The Heart's Invisible Furies
Nothing More Dangerous
The Unhoneymooners
A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II by Sonia Purnell
Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man by Mary Trump (I liked the psychology)

I would most like to read:
Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland
Invisible LIfe of Addie La Rue
The Unseen World
Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men

Other possibilities:
How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy
I like the recommendations for: A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again: Essays and Arguments. I bought it for my dad 20 years ago, but I never read it myself.
The Home for Unwanted Girls
Do Not Say We Have Nothing
Invisible Love
I won Don't Look Back (one of them)
Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea

message 50: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments I read The Honey-Don't List by Christina Lauren The Honey-Don't List by Christina Lauren. It was just a so so book. Christina Lauren’s The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren The Unhoneymooners was really good and I recommend that book instead.
