I have noticed on the GR librarians group thread regarding deletions there have been requests to delete placeholders.
When I hear about an upcoming publication from a favourite author and there may be cover and synopsis details I would add it or notice that others would. To me this is a placeholder.
Am I correct in thinking that if someone does not add the ASIN or ISBN details that the imports will add it again,
If the ASIN or ISBN is there then do the import engines act as if it is already there?
What if the placeholder has not been picked up as the same edition and there are too many shelvings to merge it?
Thanks for any advice.

I have noticed that there may be one ISBN for the ebook (non kindle) and yet editions are being added that may say nook or smashwords or kobo etc.
Nothing to do with an alternate cover edition
Is it correct to only have one edition with one ISBN - if verified as same publisher and same publishing date and cover?
How is this usually handled?
Technically then do the others need to be merged, then deleted?
Clarifying this from a GR Librarian perspective would be helpful, many thanks.

If the ASIN or ISBN is there then do the import engines act as if it is already there?"
This is correct.
What if the placeholder has not been picked up as the same edition and there are too many shelvings to merge it?
When users refer to placeholders here they are usually referring to a dummy cover that is put up in lieu of the final, published cover. It may be a preliminary image, or say "coming soon", or something along those lines.
When the final cover is available, we replace the placeholder image with it.

After looking through some of the posts this morning regarding merging and deletions
It seems best practice to post to that thread if duplicate editions are found and both have more than five shelvings?
And if manually adding a new edition or book to ensure that the ISBN or ASIN is there. I am asking because often the import engines have all sorts of formatting or are not following the practice for series, so it seems that making sure it is there first is simpler?
Thank you.

Yes, super-librarians can handle the merges that we mere mortal librarians cannot.
And if manually adding a new edition or book to ensure that the ISBN or ASIN is there. I am asking because often the import engines have all sorts of formatting or are not following the practice for series, so it seems that making sure it is there first is simpler?
Yes, and feel free to correct any series designations that don't follow GR standard. Also delete anything like "a such-and-such novel" that authors love to put in there nowadays.

ISBN should never see the light of day, but some authors don't realize and add them anyhow. The same with Audible editions.
2, Nook editions use a 13 digit nook number that are in the ISBN13 field, but I have notice that some Nook editions are now using the ISBN on their site.
3. Most Kobo editions have an ISBN, but I have seen some librarians use the Kobo number, and I have not been clear as to whether this is accepted practice or just one of those things to fix when you find it.
4. I have attempted to merge Kindle exclusive editions with ISBNs into Kindle editions with ASIN, but some librarians have preferred to leave the ISBN editions out of caution.
5. My personal preference is not to add an addition until there is a corresponding identification number to prevent duplicates, but that is a "perfect world" case and not going to happen. I do encourage authors to provide the relevant numbers as soon as possible, but that isn't always preventative either.
Has this helped you any?

Kobo "ISBN"s starting with 123 are allowed, just like Nook's 294 "ISBN"s. (AFAIK, if the normal ISBN is used, the format should be ebook and not Nook.)

Some, thank you Suzi - it helps to know that there are ISBNs as such.
I suppose then the more accurate query would be if an ebook is offered on multiple platforms ie Nook, Kobo, smashwords etc does that mean that there should be a separate edition for each one?
OR one ebook or epub edition that covers all those platforms?
Please forgive if I am not asking the correct question, I am simply wishing to respect GR and to also clarify editions for a couple of books in a series.
Picking up on lethe's reply it looks as though one ISBN for ebook should be used - that is what I thought myself, though have been finding all sorts - and simply wanted to clarify how the situation should be handled/
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks lethe the ISBN for ebook is how I thought it needed to be handled as such. Simply wanted to make sure.

nutshell:
1 Edition for Kindle
1 Edition for Nook
1 Edition for other ebook, and possibly 1 Edition for Kobo.

That is correct, except that Kobo isn't listed as a separate format, so the format would be ebook with "ISBN" 123xxxxxxxxxx.
(And of course there can be different ebook editions, with different ISBNs.)

These are all the same book. Could you combine them?

#15 Canda, is there an ebook version available of Eight Seconds other than on Amazon? If so, what is the ISBN?
Suzi wrote: "1 Edition for Nook

If and only if the Nook edition has a special ISBN. Some Nook editions have a standard ISBN13 starting 978 (or 979). In this case the format would be ebook, not Nook. (And the same ISBN might or might not be used on other sites.)
Also, in some cases there are multiple ebook editions, with different standard ISBNs. (There can be many reasons for this, including geography and platform.)

re the series title I remember GR policy changing a while back though I actually left them there, Author's preference is to show edition type, and I have not seen the series link having any issues?

Readers' preference is to show the series title. In My Books f.e., the series title is only shown if it appears in the title field, and can only be searched if it appears in the title field. Example: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
It is against Goodreads policy to remove series information from the title field.

It was against GR policy when I first joined GR years ago and not long after (just before Amazon took over) the series function was introduced, which at the time I understood to have replaced the brackets (series, # ...)
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
So does this mean that that policy was not finalised.... or it has reverted back?
I have been away from GR for a while and appreciate that things may have changed....
As a reader I appreciate the series info - though the series function is fine.
Is it simply for search purposes?
Forgive the queries, I will need to explain :)
Thanks for your time, much appreciated.

Lethe, just clarifying as I feel it may have been misunderstood
I clicked on the link you supplied and it only has the grey series listing without the in brackets?
similar to this in ALL editions it shows as (audio CD) and still shows the series number...?
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
From what I now understand removing the brackets means it doesn't show up on reader's my books with the book name unless you click on the record?
Thank you

See this comment from the moderator: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
The moderator has also said that if the series info is there, removing it is against policy, but I can't find a comment stating that.
You clicked on the link to My Reviews? If the series title had not been added to the title fields, you would have not been able to see it (or search for it). Compare the omnibus edition to the single volumes: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list... : it didn't show up when I searched for a word from the series title (Hitchhiker).
On the book page, the series title overwrites any series information in the title field, but on the 'All editions' page you can see exactly which ones have the info added to the title field and which ones don't: https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio...

It's in the Librarian Manual: "Book edit page – the title field"
If correct series information has been added to the title field, do not remove it from the book record

Thanks for highlighting and clarifying. Is there a way to still read the librarian manual completely like it used to be possible to ensure that I am up to date?

What would the usual practice be?
Many thanks in advance.

No, it has been broken up into articles without any logical order that I can see. Through the link Arenda posted you should be able to find the other articles.

That isbn 10 doesn't look right.
Are you sure its the isbn from the book? As its the 2013 edition, it should also have the isbn 13 printed on the book.

I am not sure.
GR message came up after editing the title and I could not find that ISBN10 matching anything ....
Is it GR practice to contact the person who loaded the edition to request that they take another look?
OR simply merge with a paperback.... OR something else.

A librarian may do any or all of those things. As you are here chatting about the book, it would be silly not to ask you to have another look at the isbns.
The isbns could be listed on the copyright page, another page at the beginning of the book or on the back cover.
Please have another look and as I said you should have an isbn 13 if the book was 2013.

K, didn't add the book themselves (only re-added series information). I believe they are asking whether they should contact the person who did add the book.

Somehow there is a second listing which wasn’t there before.
I have screen shots. How do I remove the extra one?
