Emily Foster | 5 comments A boy aged about 12-15 feels overshadowed by his older brother, because the older brother is really good at sports, and the younger one isn't. The younger brother decides to take horseback riding lessons, but during a very early one, falls off and breaks his arm. He goes straight back to it as soon as his arm is healed, and the older boy confesses that he's terrified of horses and thinks his brother is cool and brave for continuing to learn. I read it many times in the early 90's, but it was more likely published in the 80's, possibly as early as the 70's.

"Kiddie farce--pegged to a half-hour Problem. "When your older brother is Roger Fingler, the superjock, it's tough being Warren Fingler, the super nonjock." But eleven-year-old Warren, facing a summer at Camp Hit-a-Homer, also confides in super-gift-athlete (and secret Roger-admirer) Laurel, 14, his "horrible secret": he's terrified of hitting or catching a ball. Lessons from sympathetic Laurel don't help; but a try at horseback riding does gain Warren a broken arm and temporary hero-status. Then he challenges class show-off Claire Van Kemp to a Jay Cee money-raising contest; and when Claire's junk food barbecue outdraws Roger Fingler (health-food) Miracle Milk, Warren comes up with a sure-fire idea: an exhibition baseball game in which the sixth graders will get to play with Roger, Laurel, and other high school stars--and Warren won't have to play because of his broken arm. The arm heals, however, and Warren is headed for public humiliation; but somehow he hangs onto the crucial ball--breaking his arm all over again. "Camp Hit-a-Homer is definitely out for this summer." Still, with help from both Laurel and Roger, and all he's been through. . . maybe he'll get it together with the ball. Hokum, but largely inoffensive. (Kirkus Reviews, April 1, 1983)"
