SOLVED. YA Dystopia. Young man somehow survives a surgery set up by the government to kill anyone who undergoes it. He escapes the hospital, runs into a young woman, they fall in love. Read it a few years ago, it was definitely written post-2000.

So this book is set sometime in the near future with some kind of dystopian government. The book switches perspectives between the young man and woman throughout. Over time the surgery the man survived starts to take it's toll with symptoms of brain damage flaring up.

So they both decide to join this resistance group and stay with them for a little while but when the main leader dies and his son takes over, they decide that they'd rather the current government be reformed instead of toppled, so they leave the group and start helping the government. Over time the brain damage gets worse and worse until the man requires surgery to survive. He does but forgets all about his relationship with the woman, and she leaves him in the hospital.
