Thomas Someone explained to me in another thread here about the wild card rule. Does anyone know if that will apply next year?

Some (maybe most) of Alexander McCall Smith's books were written as episodic pieces in the newspapers. I have been following the Bertie books which were all written as separate pieces.

Yes, that's an annual option for everyone. This group is very much a "it's your challenge, you make your own rules" kind of place. You can interpret prompts however you want, and apply a wildcard or not. (I never use a wildcard, but I know some people insert a wildcard annually).

Maybe instead of the state you could focus on the village/town/city where you grew up. That would narrow things down, I would think.

Interesting. Thick:... was one of my favorite reads this year and I highly recommend it. That said, it wouldn't occur to me to think of it as a fat-positive book. "

I see what you mean. Based on what I've read about the book, I think while the overall theme isn't about body/fat-positivity, I think that it might work from the perspective angle. I'm reading it next year regardless, so I'll see how I feel about the fit after I read it. (if this prompt makes it in)

message 106: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments I agree that I wouldn't put Thick in that category, but that's the wonderful thing about this group. We can add where and what we think fits best.

In a similar vain to Tressie McMillan, Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay is most definitely a fat-positive book.

message 107: by Avery (new)

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments I ended up voting for the genre-like prompts! I like the simple wording of "a love story" so I voted for that one so I can slot in a romance. I also voted for time-travel because I liked the idea of this sub genre.

I like prompts that have to deal with the reader's interpretation of the book, so I voted for a book that elicits humor!

As far as 2021-related prompts, I voted for Year of the Ox since I wanted more 2021-related prompts, and this one was concise and to the point, unlike the other ox prompt that was submitted earlier. I think 2021 Pantone Color of the year is really cool, but I still would use it the same way as monochromatic cover, so I couldn't vote for it. I also dislike the inclusion of 2020 in there as well.

Irene (irene5) | 919 comments Sorry, could a mod tell me if I’ve voted yet or not? I’ve been so busy these last couple of days that I can’t recall if I’ve voted in this or the close calls poll or not. My darn goldfish memory!!

I can’t see a vote in this week’s poll from you Irene, but the poll is still open so you can go ahead and vote now. :-)

Got it, Irene!

(This is why I vote first before I open the polls. If I waited, I would definitely be snooping on what everyone else was voting and alter my votes accordingly.)

I always vote immediately because I am impatient, but also so I don’t forget.

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO VOTE!

message 115: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Let's hope we get plenty of ups.

I voted on the first day this time, and now I remember why I don’t do that very often. I feel like I voted a month ago and still have another whole day before we get results! I am definitely more impatient waiting for results after I vote, so I think it’s best for me to mull over my options, read the discussion, and vote on the last day of voting. That way, I vote and then, voila, the next day we have results! 😁

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments For me it always feels long when it's during the week. When the voting goes over the weekend it's faster because I'm not in front of the computer all day like during the week when I'm working.

Every week has seemed longer than the previous week. On the other hand I wish the whole thing would slow down because I'm not ready for it be over. I love this whole process so much. It really pulls the group together in a way nothing else does.

Yep I agree!!

message 121: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I agree with you, dalex. I'm pretty sad that the list making process is finishing up. It's definitely the best part of the group, I think.

I also love taking the list and picking books for it. I try to restrict myself to 10 books at a time, but...

No worries, Emily. I just was having a slow work morning and wanted to play with books. :) I appreciate all that you - and the other mods - do to make this challenge happen.
