Last week, it was suggested that the prompt: A book related to “The End” be the last one of the year. If that is the case, it would be fitting to have a corresponding prompt at the beginning of the year to serve as the other bookend.
15. A book related to colonialism
This can be anything. A fiction or a non-fiction.
Some of the examples are Homegoing, Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood, Things Fall Apart, Half of a Yellow Sun, Midnight's Children, An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India, Pachinko etc.

Not sure I want another list prompt but at least the Audie Awards have a good range of genres. I kinda want another genre prompt but I'm not sure. The letter one seems quite tricky, but maybe I just need to think of more subgenres.
Oh and I saw that Julie Murphy is meant to have another book out in the Dumplin' series next year, if that sways anyone on the fat positive book.

Multiple perspective books where the characters are spread out, a lot of high fantasy for instance. Off the top of my head for contemporary The Switch would work, one character is in London and the other is in Yorkshire.

The 5 star prediction prompt is interesting but I think it has a bit of crossover with the favorite book from 2020 one. If you loved a book, there's a good chance you're going to predict you'll love another book by the same author or the next book in the series.
I don't really like the audie award one because I never listen to audio books. I know I can read a book that was nominated, rather than listening to it, but that doesn't feel like it would be in the spirit of the prompt.
I honestly have zero interest in fat books and don't like any of the choices on the listopias.
The forbidden and handcrafting ones will be interesting to research. Nothing immediately comes to mind but I know there must be some great choices for both.

Mystery/Thriller - I read a ton of thrillers/mysteries so this can help slot in a book that has no where else to go. I'd also like more fiction genre specific prompts, which we don't have a ton of.
Predicting to be a 5-Star Read - Any book I've been wanting to read or hearing a ton about will be easy to put here, even if it doesn't end up being 5 stars for me.
Forbidden - I'm sure after reading a book, there's likely to be something that can fit in here, like falling in love with someone already in a relationship, falling in love with your best friend, breaking the law, doing something illegal, trespassing...
A book that might make you smarter - I like the openness of this one too, how it can be a classic I've been meaning to read, or a non-fiction about whatever topic. Could also be a historical fiction book in which I'd like to know more about the historical event.
A beautiful book - easy to slot in something also at the end, either a beautiful cover, a beautiful message, or a book with beautiful writing.

Homegoing would work set in both Ghana and the US. Similarly, The Vanishing Half is set in several locations following both twins and their daughters.

When I proposed this prompt, I was thinking about those books that are hard to report under the Group Reading Map since they don't have one setting. Also, it could include books set in multiple cities within the same state or country. Some examples include: Fall of Giants (family stories in the US, Germany, Russia, and Great Britain), Cutting for Stone (Ethiopia and the US), The Heart's Invisible Furies (Ireland and the US), The Tsar of Love and Techno (3 cities in the USSR/Russia), The Sparrow (Puerto Rico and the planet Rakhat), Me by Elton John (Great Britain and the US), and The Winds of War.

I'm finding this is a difficult prompt to research. It's easy to find books that take place in more than one location but it's usually not clear how prominently each location features in the story. Are they both primary, or is one primary and the others secondary? I'd like the prompt a lot more without that word "primary."

First, I'm also glad someone called out the dash needed for fat-positive. I also thought we were talking about 1000+ books and being positive about it. I was also down for that challenge too. If you are interested in this topic, I highly recommend Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body.
The only one I love on first look is "In the Beginning".
For forbidden, I like that and was actually thinking about a prompt related to the 21st Amendment, since it'll be 2021. While a US Amendment, it dealt with prohibition, which was a law across the world. Generally, it relates to alcohol but could also be anything that is forbidden, prohibited, not allowed, etc.

Landwhale: On Turning Insults Into Nicknames, Why Body Image Is Hard, and How Diets Can Kiss My Ass
You Have the Right to Remain Fat
Dietland
They all three look so funny!
And of course there's always Roxane Gay or Lindy West.

As of right now, I only have one definite upvote (mystery or thriller).

Angie, I'm definitely feeling the prompt fatigue lol. But I'm expecting for Poll 18 to be our last poll (assuming things continue on trend of the last few weeks), so stick with it for a little while longer!

I am not sure about the rest of the prompts. Some research is definitely needed.

Sewing - Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker, Torn, or The Dressmaker's Gift.
Weaving - The Silk House or The Weaver
Glass work - Clara and Mr. Tiffany or The Glassblower of Murano
Pottery - Midnight Blue
Cooking (does that count?) - The Chef's Secret or White Truffles in Winter
And I'm pretty sure there's at least one character that would fit the prompt in The Pillars of the Earth.

A book related to music - not a vote up or down since we have had so many song/music related prompts in the recent past.
A fat-positive book - probably a down vote for me as I struggle with weight and don't want to be told that it is ok OR be fed an unrealistic romance either
A book in which the title starts with the same letter as its genre (ignoring a, an, and the) - this one could be interesting to research either from the genre perspective or starting with my to be read list. I'll do some preliminary research before I decide to vote.
A book that you (or others!) might think will make you smarter - definite upvote as I always have classics that I think I 'should' read (War and Peace...I'm looking at you)
A book you predict will be a five star read - right now, this one is looking like a downvote. I don't really rate books other than like or dislike. Even my favorite authors don't always produce the type of effect that I would expect a 5 star rating.
A beautiful book -
A book related to an element of your favorite film/tv show - we did a similar prompt recently either in PopSugar or ATY and I wound up reading a lengthy, well written fan-fic. If this one gets in, I'll probably go that way again.
A book with reference to handcrafting - I won't vote either way on this one, but will go the cozy mystery route if it gets in.
A work of fiction with a reference book in the title - research is needed as the only thing that springs to mind is the Encyclopedia Brown series.
A mystery or thriller - nice and broad, but another one that I will probably not vote either way for. I'll be happy if it makes it in and can get by ok if it doesn't.
A book nominated for an Audie Award (read in any format) - I never listen to books as my mind wanders, but if this one gets in, I'll try to listen first before I read a book from the list. Maybe Pride & Prejudice will be nominated and I can finally make it through by listening to it.
A book about the forbidden - need to think about this one more.
A book related to “In the Beginning...” - Love this one along with 'related to "the end"'. Its a definite upvote.
A book with more than one primary setting - a probable up-vote
A book related to colonialism - need to do a little research here, but would highly recommend Born a Crime by Trevor Noah for anyone who hasn't read it.

Cloud Atlas, The Atlas of Reds and Blues, An Atlas of Impossible Longing, The Atlas of Us, The Dictionary of Animal Languages, The Liar's Dictionary, A Dictionary of Mutual Understanding, A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, The Encyclopedia of Early Earth, The Russian Debutante's Handbook, Lexicon, A Doubter's Almanac, A Catalog of Birds

I also recently read The Miniaturist which would work.
Fat-positive immediately brought Good in Bed to mind, though I read it so long ago I don't know how positive it is. Her most recent, Big Summer, also fits.
Right now my upvotes are leaning toward related to music, mystery or thriller, nominated for an Audie, In the Beginning, fat-positive. Work of fiction with reference in the title and forbidden are maybes.

I definitely would like to see more genre prompts in the final list, especially a specific fiction genre, since we don't have any of those on our list. But we have mystery on the list this year. I know it's broader because it includes thriller, but I'd like to see something different. I would like to see something really different, like western, or love story, but I don't think the group is ever going to vote for one of those.

Popsugar did western this year and it was very unpopular, getting through a democratic process would be tough. I could see romance get through though

My initial reactions are:
- I don't have anything against fat-positive but don't really see any options on my shelf so will probably have to downvote.
- Reference book in the title is another I like the sound of but don't have many options for.
- I enjoy mystery/thrillers but we have a mystery prompt this year so I think it's a bit soon for a repeat genre. Maybe if it was 'thriller' only it would work better?
- 5 star prediction is maybe too similar to the favourite author from 2020
- I don't mind the prompt but dislike the wording of 'a book that will make you smarter' I'm all for learning and informative books but don't go in expecting to become 'smart' after reading anything
I'm most likely to vote for colonialism, 'the beginning' and Audie awards.

I share many of your thoughts but I voted for mystery/ thriller because i love them so much.

I almost NEVER give five star reviews, so I feel like this one just isnt honestly possble for me
I am the same way about giving few books 5 stars. And a lot of the time when a book has a lot of hype, I end up not liking it that much. Or a book I am looking forward to because I liked the author’s previous book. So it would be for me “a book you think will be very good “.

Cloud Atlas, [book:Th..."
Thanks, Dalex. Cloud Atlas has been on my radar, but for some reason I didn’t include an atlas in reference materials. Pretty bad since I used to be a high school librarian. Lol
for the five star prediction, i meant the spirit of the prompt to be to read something you truly believe is going to be your 'perfect' book. i know most of us rarely give out five stars in reality (i'm the same) but i kind of thought you could use a book you really think is just going to tick all your boxes. it doesn't have to be literally, objectively 'perfect' but it's a perfect book for you. or maybe you think it has the potential of being your favourite book of the year. along those lines.
it definitely isn't similar to the favourite author prompt (at least, to me) because just because an author wrote something i adored this year doesn't mean their next book is something i'm anticipating will be a new favourite. it might be good or i'll be more inclined to enjoy it, but this is specifically to read that Holy Grail book.

i'm definitely thinking of voting for the
- fat-positive book - i'm all down for reading more fat characters, especially in a positive light! i have a shelf with 50 books with fat protagonists here https://www.goodreads.com/review/list... if anyone needs some ideas
- title starts with the same letter as its genre - this will be fun to research!
- related to an element of your favourite film/tv show - this could be fun, i love crime shows so i could read a mystery or a thriller. if the genre prompt gets through, i could be more creative!
- related to “In the Beginning...” - if this doesn't get through to be our first prompt of the year, i'll genuinely be upset haha
- book with more than one primary setting - like everyone else, i like the idea of this but i'm not sure how to research it
- book related to colonialism - love this!

The ones I'll be upvoting for sure are:
A book in which the title starts with the same letter as its genre (ignoring a, an, and the) - sounds scavenger hunt-y in a good way! I love searching through my shelves to find books that fit prompts like this since it's not so narrow that I might not have any (since many books have multiple genres) but not so broad that it's a freebie.
A book you think will make you smarter - I suggested it, so I'm biased, but I'd love to read more nonfiction and less books in my comfort zone
A book related to an element of your favorite film/tv show - sounds like it could be a lot of fun! Again, a bit scavenger hunt-y if you do the character's names or similar themes.
A book related to “In the Beginning...” - I'm one of the few who really wanted more multi-week prompts and this would basically be a paired prompt with a book related to "the end"
The ones I'm less sure about:
A book you predict will be a five star read - Just because I only read books I think I'll like, so I go into every book hoping to love it. But also, I give very few books 5 stars!
A book nominated for an Audie Award (read in any format) - I'd only vote for another list prompt if I really liked it. In this case, I don't read audiobooks so reading/choosing a print book based on it having a good narrator on the audiobook edition seems a bit pointless for me
A book with more than one primary setting - because it seems similar to "A book with a travel theme," which I'm having a surprisingly difficult time with.
Irene wrote: "I seem to have unpopular opinions because I didn't like as many prompts in the last poll (but many people loved them!) but I really love a lot in this one!!."
same! i was so surprised by the reaction to the last poll because it was the time i used my most downvotes ever
but i agree with a lot of your thoughts for this round. love a good scavenger hunt-y prompt as long as it is possible to research for it!

I'm not sure if diary would count?

If that prompt gets in, I just read a great book for it! One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London. It's so well-written!

A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories
Life: A User's Manual
The Zombie Combat Manual: A Guide to Fighting the Living Dead
The Manual: A Philosopher's Guide to Life
The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force

I almost NEVER give five star reviews, so I feel like this one just isnt honestly possble for me"
Conversely, I expect ALL of the books I read to be five stars! I wouldn't read them otherwise (unless, of course, there was some other reason where I HAD to read the book, like this year Popsugar had "medical thriller" and I just sort of choked down my disappointment and read the best candidate I could find, hating it all the while.). So this is a weird category for me, it's like: "read a book."

I didn't like medical thriller either. I ended up stretching that one. I am currently reading a thriller involving a cover up by drug companies for that one.

Johanne wrote: "For reference book there are quite a few books with "manual" in the title, that are not your ordinary manual...
Excellent suggestions and certainly some reference works I hadn't considered.
I think "diary" could possibly count as they are used for genealogical reference.

Emily (or another mod), can you confirm that my vote went through? I seemed to get re-directed to the main page of the survey site instead of a confirmation once I submitted.

Downvotes for handcraft (nothing of interest to me), beautiful book, and 5 star because, like others mentioned, I'm so harsh that I rarely think of any books as 5 star!

This year I've got to read a medical thriller and a western for pop sugar and horror for read harder. I dont want to read any of them and it just puts me off finishing the list.

Up
10. A mystery or thriller ( I don't think it will win but it's my vote and I love them)
7. A book related to an element of your favorite film/tv show ( I seconded it so it would be hypocritical not to)
14. A book with more than one primary setting ( nice and flexible)
Down
1. A book related to music (just not my thing)
2. A fat-positive book ( Not sure what to read)
4. A book that you (or others!) might think will make you smarter (just could not get my head round)
8. A book with reference to handcrafting ( just not an interest of mine)
11. A book nominated for an Audie Award (read in any format) (just not into audio books and while it says any format fine that could mean ignoring the thing that won it the award)
so yeah a lot of personal taste.

Voting will open in the morning of Tuesday, October 6 and results will be posted in the morning of Saturday, October 10 (CST time).
How it works:
- When the voting opens, follow the link to the mini-poll that will be added at the end of this post
- You have a total of 8 votes this poll to spread across your favourite and least favourite prompts (you can also use less than 8 votes) - You can find examples of acceptable voting practices on the Introduction thread.
- The prompts with the more favorable votes (comparing top votes to bottom votes, and looking at the overall number of votes it received) will be added to the final list (between 2 and 5 depending on how the votes are spread)
We are asking people to include their Goodreads profile address when they vote. To find this, just go to your own profile and then copy the URL/web address. If for some reason you can't link to your Goodreads profile, please post your full Goodreads name with enough identifiable information that we'll be able to access your profile. We’ve introduced this for two reasons:
1. On a few occasions in each poll, people have used more than the allotted number of votes, either because they aren’t familiar with the rules or just by mistake. When this happens our only option is to disregard the vote as we can’t identify the voter to ask them to resubmit. By asking for your profile address we’ll be able to message you and ask you to vote again if you’ve accidentally used more than the allotted number of votes.
2. Unfortunately a very small number of people have voted more than once per poll and so we are asking for this information to prevent duplicate votes.
As a reminder: You have a total of 8 votes to use among your top and bottom votes. The mods have access to each individual vote, so we can see if you use more than 8 votes. If you use more than 8 votes in the poll, your vote will have to be deleted, so please make sure to follow the directions so your voice can be heard.
