Thomas Kim wrote: "52 prompts = 52 books - 1 book per prompt"

But some prompts require more than one book as in the past, present and future one this year, so is that still one prompt?

For multi-book prompts, those are given multiple weeks. So this one will be something like:
3 books related to "Past, Present, Future” - Book 1
3 books related to "Past, Present, Future“ - Book 2
3 books related to "Past, Present, Future“ - Book 3
Each book will be listed as a prompt for a different week.

52 books. :) Some prompts are multi-week/multi-books prompts

Irene (irene5) | 915 comments Question! Do most of you guys do the prompts in order?? And stick to the one-book-a-week format? Or do you just aim to finish all 52 prompts within the calendar year without necessarily reading a book a week or caring about the order?

(This is my first year actually participating/voting actively, since in the past I just chose the prompts I liked and only did those.)

Some people do one, some the other. I'm in the "I can't possibly plan my reading like that" camp. But others follow the weekly plan.
So, it's up to you. And I don't know about what most do, maybe the mods have a better idea of that.

Thanks to you both for a good question and a good answer. I cannot do them in order because I have promised my self no book buys till I get my unread kindle books down so I have to start with prompts that fit the ones I have

i haven't been actively participating and this is my first year joining in on the voting, but i'm planning on reading in order next year but not sticking to the one a week time frame. i read too quickly for that!

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I set out to read in order this year but stopped because of everything however I like the idea of using the challenge to help me pick what to read next so I'm going to try again next year but not be too strict with myself. I read a lot of new releases so if the list doesn't align very well with release dates I'll be flexible. I also do Popsugar so I can read more randomly for that. I don't stick to one a week though.

I'm thinking instead of a rejects challenge I'll do the phonetic alphabet instead. Not that I ever finish my rejects challenges!

Conny | 647 comments Like annie and Irene, I haven't actively participated before, but I've taken the challenge before without sticking to the proposed order or frequency. I always take the Popsugar challenge, too, so I've been mixing them up at will, sometimes reading five books straight from one before returning to the other.
I might try to read in order next year, though, now that I've been involved in the whole process :)

Not only do I not read in order, but I sometimes switch books for a prompt I've already done, if I later find one that I think works better.

I think this year the shutdown of libraries caused a problem for some people who were reading in order. We all hope that won't happen again. I think most libraries at least have pickup options now.
For me, it got me to read some of the ebooks I had bought in the past and totally forgotten about, because I don't see them lying around like physical books.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I am in awe of the organisational abilities of those who read in order using only the library.

message 115: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments I am also amazed at those that can go in order. I feel like my library sometimes picks random wait times (just got Dune from the library, but yesterday it said it would be 4 weeks), so that would be a big struggle for me.

Also, I read a lot of fantasy series, and once I start a series I need to see it through and trying to slot it in would be too hard.

I read in order last year and really enjoyed it because I always knew what was coming next. It did get a little sticky towards the end because there were a lot of books I wanted to read but couldn't slot in for the challenge, but all in all, I liked it.

I'm a mostly library reader, but my library rarely has holds, so there weren't too many issues with it, as long as I checked the book out in advance.

message 117: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments I don’t read in order and usually stick to the books I have chosen . In a sense that is the point for me. Both the biography of Edward Lear and the two-part biography of Stalin I read this year we’re quite a slog but reading them to fulfill a prompt encouraged me to stick with them. However, my town library has been entirely closed since March so I have had an unusual amount of jiggling which book fills which prompt this year.

message 118: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I read in order last year as a library reader and liked that I knew what I was reading next for ATY. I also had some flexibility in that I could mood read for other challenges. I put holds on books very early and suspended them so I would move up in the holds but not accidentally get them too early. I did have issues a couple times with holds not becoming available or a book I had chosen not really fitting the prompt, so I would have to figure out another option that was readily available. I think it's more doable if you tend to read more than 52 books a year, but if your reading pace is about 1/week, it could be tough.

message 119: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I did not read in order this year but I want to try to next year. I'm also a mostly library reader but do have some print/ebooks I own.

I try to stick to the list but I also always want to read new releases, and often slot them in for something else.

This is my 3rd year of doing the challenge, and my first year of participating in the choosing of the prompts. I've never read in order before, never really considered it, to be honest. I do the challenge simultaneously with the Pop Sugar challenge, and this year - because I am now retired and in part due to the pandemic, I have spent a lot more time reading! Next year, I might try reading in order, and slowing down - but we'll see.

message 121: by Kat (new)

Kat | 567 comments I decided to read in order this year and then gave up after two weeks. I'm too much of a mood reader. This year almost everything has been read on Overdrive. My library is always adding books I decide would be a better fit or interest me more than something I had planned on reading. I have books that were on my list for the last three years and I still haven't read them.

The other reason I don't read in order is that I belong to several book groups on GR & IRL. If they choose a book and I read it, I want it to count for something right away and that's unlikely to be the prompt of the week.

message 123: by [deleted user] (new)

i think it depends on how quickly or how much you read in a year as well. i know if i was someone who read 50-100 books a year & only from the library, i probably wouldn't read in order because i would find it limiting. i'm lucky to average double that and have access to a physical & online library (which is a massive statewide library system), a well-stocked bookstore & arcs so the aty challenge is only a quarter of my reading year (or less).

message 124: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 915 comments Thanks for all the great responses!! I don't borrow from the library (I typically buy books to support the author/publisher/bookstore and then donate them to the library) so I won't have that limitation, thankfully. I also just own 90+ books already that I haven't read that I always want to use for challenges!

I do the Popsugar challenge every year (like a lot of you!!) so I'm thinking I'll keep doing that one in whatever order I feel like while trying to do this one in order if possible. The only thing is that I'll probably end up tetris-ing the books around to fit different prompts from what I originally have planned!
