Billie Lubis | 3 comments This is a fiction (young adult or kids) mystery book. I think the "detective" main character is a girl in around middle school or maybe a little younger. Some jewels and things go missing. I know the kids investigate a little house where they think the jewels might be hidden, but I don't think they find anything and I think they end up having to leave in a hurry.

There is an old woman in the book. Near the end, the main character has a suspicion that the old woman is not who she appears to be because she looks at her fingernails by curling her fingers towards her rather than holding her hand out in front of her with her palm facing away. The main character thinks this seems like a masculine trait and confirms this with a few of her friends by asking them to look at their nails. It turns out the old lady is a man disguised as an old lady, and he's the one that took the jewels.

I think I must have read this book around 2005. I think the cover had an illustration of the main character and/or the other kids and also some jewels on it. It was a chapter book. Also I think the title was multiple words, something like "The ____ of ____" or whatever.

Don't know when it would have been published, there is nothing that I remember that might date the book.

I don't think it's a Nancy Drew book. It's definitely not Encyclopedia Brown. The book format is that of a regular chapter book, not anything where you "solve the mystery" yourself. Other suggestions I've gotten on Reddit include: McGurk mystery series, The Mystery of the Missing Necklace by Enid Blyton, and Cam Jansen - it is none of these. I don't really think the book was part of a series either, or if it was it must have been the only one in the series that I read.
