Anndrea C (helloannndie) | 2 comments Hello! It's my turn to pick a book for my book club and I was wondering if you could please provide with some suggestions.

Books they typically enjoyed were Vicious by VE Schwabb, Red Rising by Pierce Brown and the Insignia series by SJ Kincaid.

Adult or YA audience is fine. I feel like the group prefers YA though.

See previous books we've read: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I want to say they like sci-fi but that's not necessarily the case. They like alternate universe or low fantasy books. I don't believe they're fans of novels set before the 80s. I severely dislike books that deal with crime or anything too paranomal. I would prefer no vampires or zombies. I'm getting sick of them.

Translated novels are ok but only if you think it was done well.

Some light reading.

I want to suggest Ready Player One but I'd like your opinions and suggestions first.

Thank you very much!!!!

Michele | 279 comments Ready Player One is a lot of fun.

I'll suggest All You Need Is Kill. It was the basis for the movie Edge of Tomorrow which I thought was great so I just started reading it and it's very good, though a bit different from the movie, of course.

Young soldier (Earth has been invaded by aliens) keeps experiencing the same day over and over again - he dies every time and wakes up back at the beginning of the day. He slowly works out what's going on and how to survive longer each time.

Another one, and this is kind of a long-shot, The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack. It's steampunk, alternate 1880s London, a lot of fun, weirdness, and action with two great main characters and a very twisted plot. This was the book that made me like steampunk.

A softer intro to steampunk would be Agatha H and the Airship City. It's very good, more YA, with a great female main character. Again, lots of fun in an alternate Earth setting.

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 433 comments I say go ahead and choose Ready Player One, it's a five-star read IMO.
I thought it was was awesome, absolutely awesome! A great read for those who love sci-fi and dystopias, but it will be even cooler for those who grew up in the 80s and will know what all those certain video games and movies and tv shows references mean.

Julie (onetrooluff) | 90 comments Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie! One of my favorite books I read last year, and there is a lot going on that would make for good book group discussion.

Invitation to the Game I'm suggesting this because it has been "searched" for ELEVEN times in our group. I think it's our all time #1 requested for help finding book.

The Prince in Waiting series is a kind of dystopian book, set in the far future. (It's part of a trilogy, btw, so your group would have others to read if they liked it.)

I will go ahead with Ready Player One but the other books seem very interesting so I will read them as well (for my personal pleasure not for the club)
