Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments Looking for a book my husband read about 1980. He was sevenish, but the book could have been for older kids. Here's what he remembers:

It was a world with no adults. Kids formed different groups called "planets."

It had an urban setting. the "planets" were outdoors in alleys, etc. No one lived in houses.

Newer kids to the planets were taught the group rules by the other kids: this is how we do things in our planet, etc.

It may have featured all Black characters, but he may be confusing that with another book.

There are several editions and various different covers. It also seems to have been rewritten later as Trouble at Timpetill.

Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments Maybe! Thanks for the idea. I'll ILL a copy and check with him.

Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments Still waiting for my copy of Timpetill, and I'm reading a bunch of other "no adults" books too. So far, none of them have the specific detail of the groups/gangs/families known as "planets."

My husband did remember something else when I picked his brain tonight: there were adults in the world, just not with these children. The kids may have been orphans or runaways, he's not sure, but it wasn't Logan's Run where there's no one on earth older than 21, or The Girl Who Owned a City where everyone over 12 died in a plague.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Rainbowheart | 28715 comments The No Adults list might also be a good resource.

Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments Rainbowheart, it sure is. That's where I got the list of "no adults" books that I'm currently ILLing and buying used. I am on a mission to find this book before Christmas so I can give it to my husband!

Total long shot, but The Planet of Junior Brown is about a group of homeless black children. I think there are still adults around, though.

Is your husband fairly sure the characters were black?

Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments He isn't sure - he thinks he might be confusing that part with another book. I just put a hold on Planet of Junior Brown at my library. Thank you!!

Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments I'm almost sure that is the book! I'll find out tomorrow or Thursday and let you know.

I was pretty sure that was way out in left field, but I'll be so happy if it's the right book.

Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments We're sure this is it! We haven't read it yet, but it matches everything, including the essential detail of the groups of kids being called planets. I think we can safely mark this as Found. Thanks, everybody, especially @rainbowheart!
