Barbara, I think I've only read the first book in the Miss Marple series. I've read a lot of the Hercule Poirot books though.

I think the higher numbers are tough. I usually end up re-reading those.

I hear you. I picked mine because I’ve heard that the Miss Marple books are basically standalones that can be read in any order, and it fulfilled a challenge in another group, too.

Book: A Pocket Full of Rye (Miss Marple #7) by Agatha Christie
Pages: 220 (paperback, but I am listening to audio)
Date Read: 9/23/2020
How it Fits: It is the 7th book in the Miss Marple series.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Review:
I have read several books by Agatha Christie, but A Pocket Full of Rye is the first one featuring Miss Marple. I use the term “featuring” loosely, as the main protagonist (and detective) in this book is not Miss Marple, but Inspector Neele. In fact, we don’t even encounter Miss Marple until almost halfway through the book when the murder investigation is well underway.
The action begins immediately when Rex Fortescue demands to know what was put in his morning tea. Moments later, he is dead, presumably poisoned by the tea. Upon further inspection, it is discovered that he had a few grains of rye in his pocket, a detail which raises Inspector Neele’s curiosity. Two additional murders occur in rapid succession, and it is the third murder – that of housekeeper Gladys Martin – which draws the attention of Miss Marple, who belatedly swoops in on the scene and is instrumental in exposing the perpetrator.
Despite the minimal presence of Miss Marple, the mystery itself is a good one, with layers of complexity and a plethora of suspects with familial ties. Rex’s sons, Percival and Lancelot Fortescue, and each of their wives have secrets aplenty. As do the household staff. And there are so many twists, turns and red herrings, that the reader is kept guessing throughout. Miss Marple proves herself astute as well as charming while going above and beyond to solve the murders.
Overall, I found A Pocket Full of Rye both intriguing and entertaining. And the narration by Richard E. Grant was fantastic. I hope to encounter another Miss Marple tale in the near future.
