Book: The Betrayal of the Blood Lily by Lauren Willig
Qualification: #6 in Series
Date: 11/22/2020
Rating: *****
Review: Lots of scandal in this book and it read more like a soap opera than a Historical-Romance-Mystery. I enjoyed it though and I liked that it was set in India. That was a nice twist, I liked the change in scenery.

Review excerpt: If anything, I feel like this could have been a little longer, just so that things were explained in a more succinct way from the beginning. I hope that the other books in the series, or at least the prequel, address these concerns more, but I'm not sure if the series is worth continuing unless I receive a free copy of the second book.

Review excerpt: This book was really fully, Whitney G always gets right to the point and has just enough sassiness in her female characters and just enough alpha that the story sizzles which making you laugh. Both Emily and Nichols are characters you could warm to. A lovely sweet read and I will definitely be reading more from the author soon.

Book: Take a Hint, Dani Brown
Date Read: 11/20
How it fit: Starts with a T
Rating: 4.5 stars
Review: This was much better than the previous book. Primarily because I liked Dani a lot more than Chloe. And I freaking LOVED Zaf. One of my favorite male protagonists in romance. I'm also a glutton for a good fake relationship.
I will say though that I just cannot connect with the friends with benefits trope so that lost me just a tad for a little bit there

Book: Princess of Midnight: A Retelling of Cinderella by Lucy Tempest
Date Read: 11/26
How it fits: Fairytales of Folkshore #6
Rating: 2 stars
Review: A rather brutal retelling of Cinderella with more magic, cursed and fae. Ella is a bit more than she thinks she is but that leads to her step troll family going to drastic measures to keep her for their use. She is aided by her friend's cousin and the Spring Queen but only in return to help the Winter King stay alive as attempts are made on his life. This was one in a series and while there are definite references to other stories, it was fine to read on its own. It was a bit too in her head, melodramatic for me but an interesting twist on the tale.
Thanks Celia for the suggestion! I needed a retelling for another challenge.

Have you read the rest in the series? I really like the way the author creates a world with parallels to ours but that definitely isn't. I would go back and read them if you get a chance, starting with

This week I will read

Book: The Pillars of Creation by Terry Goodkind
Pages: 725
Qualification: #7 in Sword of Truth series
Finished: 11/29/2020
Rating: 2.5 Stars
Review: This one wasn't great, there's a reason why I waited years to read this one. I decided I was going to finish reading the series because the author passed away this year so I need to finish what I started. I'm hoping the books get better but I missed Richard and Kahlen in this book.

How it fits: Lamps on cover (approved in Q/A)
Rating: 4 stars
Review excerpt: Okay, I will admit I don't exactly understand how a town can go from "a sleepy small town where nothing happens" to "a premier destination for murder," and for this reason I have a hard time understanding cozy mystery series. But the way Addison Moore and Bellamy Bloom write it makes repeated murders in the same location almost seem plausible. (On that note, I wonder if a cozy mystery writer has ever written a spinoff haunting mystery series where all the bodies come into play.)
Despite this, as I mentioned before, there are many elements in this story that made it more interesting. The authors seem to have more control over how to write Bizzy's ability to read minds, and it comes out a lot less chaotic than it did in the previous installment. I also like the way the story revolves around this more, with the addition of Leo and Camila, and how Bizzy hones into it more to work on finding the killer.

Book: Murder on the Ballarat Train by Kerry Greenwood
Date read: 12/2
How it fits: Phryne Fisher #3
Rating: 4 stars
Review: Phyrne Fisher and Dot are in the first class train car to Ballarat when Phryne wakes to the smell of chloroform. She dashes to save everyone else on the train finding the elderly passenger missing and is soon hired to find the culprit of the crime by the victim's daughter. On the same train, a young girl is discovered alone and with her memory missing. Are the two connected? It is unknown but Phryne kindly takes on the orphan and injured daughter of the murdered woman and is determined to do her best for them and make those responsible pay for their crimes.
While campy and unsurprising in the mysteries and connections, it is still a fun romp to join Phryne and the stories are improving. I enjoy Phryne's found family and look forward to more adventures.

How it fits: Fred the Mermaid #3
Rating: 4 Stars
Review:
Its been so long since I have read this series but I felt like I never left. I instantly got sucked back in and loved all the growth we saw from Fred this time around. And omg that ending yes. I was hoping it would play out the way it did and it was amazing.

Book: Death and Divination
Date Read: 4th Dec
How it fits: Accidental Witches #3
Rating: ****
Review:
This book is the second book I have read in the series, and not in the right order but it doesn’t really matter. Each book has a different character you guessed it a witch in this case Ophelia who is an oracle. They are so funny and only short and so easy to read this one had me laughing out loud often, it was so funny. The love interest in the book happens to be Nash a reaper. She manages to make her characters so much more than you expect. I will definitely carry on with this series it is hillarious!

Thanks for the update!

Book: Oathbringer
Date Read: 12/4
How it fits: #3 in Stormlight Archive series
Rating: 4 stars
Review: My least favorite of the series so far, though given my 4 star rating I obviously still very much enjoyed it. It just felt draggy sometimes in the story and I didn't find myself totally interested in every story line. The one I enjoyed the most was the Adolin/Kaladin/Shallan story, though I really like Dalinar's flashbacks as well. I loved what Sanderson did with this one in regards to Elhokar's character. I liked Lift in this one as side character who popped up occasionally as opposed to the main focus in Edgedancer. And I loved seeing chapters from the POV of different Bridge Four members

This book was better than the previous one but still not great. The story was good but there were a lot of characters thrown in with no rhyme or reason and Richard did way too much ranting and philosophizing. Richard needs to stop beating a dead horse.

Erin, thanks for taking on the leadership role!

How it fits: #3 in Country Cottage Mysteries series
Rating: 4 stars
Review excerpt: I've come to think of this series as my guilty pleasure because the first three books were free, but now I'm debating whether I really want to spend money on any of the books following. Still, I probably will end up at least buying Bow Wow Big House and maybe even the next omnibus after I spend what I need to for the holidays and budget after that. It's a fun story, and I really do want to know more about Bizzy's abilities.
