Fits: #4 in Series

Review:
This was another fun quick read in this series. I loved that this one we got to meet a single mom and saw the reason why she did what she did. The love she had for her kid was amazing. I loved when she meet Wade and how funny and snarky they both were. I cant wait to continue on with the series.

The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #5) by Rick Riordan by Rick Riordan
Date read: 10/29/20
How it fits: #5 in series

Rating: 5 stars
Review excerpt: Nothing like returning to an old favorite, especially since this has been such a shitty reading month for me.

I wasn't sure whether I wanted to read The Last Olympian while I was still in the beginning of writing my fanfiction for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which comes before in my timeline, but now I'm really glad I did. I definitely needed a fresh look at the Percy Jackson series in order to shape some side stories, even now.

I also feel like I often forget just how much I appreciate the Percy Jackson series. While I have not yet read Trials of Apollo (and am on the fence about reading the series while I finish my fanfiction, which could take years), I am really happy to return to the world of demigods again.

Megan's Mate (The Calhouns #5) by Nora Roberts
Finished: 30th Oct 2020
3 Stars
Fits: #5 in Series

Review:
Should have been able to tell from the title that this book would be corny! I did enjoy this book but not as much as the earlier instalments. One thing I do like is how the author keeps all the family members in the book so each one of them has an ongoing story even though the book is centred on Megan and Nate we find out how their relationships are progressing.

Book: The Empire of Dreams (Fire and Thorns, #4) by Rae Carson
Date Read: 10/31
How it fits: #4 in a series

Rating: 4 stars
Review: I was a little skeptical of a sequel/companion book that was being released many years after the original trilogy. It's not the first one I'd seen released this year, and some seem like cash grabs. But I was delighted by this one! I never felt particularly attached to Red in the original trilogy, but the premise of the book sounded interesting enough and I was interested to return to the world that I enjoyed in the original trilogy so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Red was great in this one, and I really liked seeing Rosario all grown up as a main character in this one. I appreciated that there wasn't a romance in this one, that's definitely a rarity these days in YA fantasy (at least from the ones I've seen). And the thing I think I liked the most from this book was how Carson wrote the other recruits reacting to there being a girl training with them for the first time ever. There was the initial raised eyebrows and comments but after that there wasn't like a mainstay villain bullying Red the whole time for being a girl or anything. People kind of embraced her, were indifferent, or disliked her for her privilege and not for simply her gender in a way that I like a lot and felt contrary to what I usually see when there's a girl training with a bunch of guys.

I honestly could have done without the "then" storyline however. It wasn't poorly written or anything like that, I just picked up the book because I was interested in reading the pitched story of Red several years post trilogy and so just didn't really care about the origin story part of the book

Review excerpt: I feel like Andrea Pearson does a good job of making the characters come on stronger at the end of the story in order to build up to The Ember Gods. At first, I figured I would just read the other books because I own the first three, but by the end of the novel I am actually looking forward to reading the next few installments. I really enjoyed this book, in fact in places it was so funny I was laughing out loud. The story is about single Mother Carys who makes friends with her next door neighbour Deacon. He soon becomes attached to both Carys and her Daughter Sunny but isn't ready for a relationship. The book follows their road to love and the sexual tension that surrounds their relationship. Really enjoyed this book.

Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels, #4) by Ilona Andrews
Book: Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews
Date Read: 5 November
Rating: 4 stars
How it fits: Kate Daniels #4

✸ Halloween Bonus: One point can be earned for reading a Horror/Paranormal/Urban Fantasy book for the roll on 10/30.

Review: The 4th book of the Kate Daniels series and the tension continues between Kate and Curran which can be fun. Kate also continues to open up more about her self and solidify that she now has serious connections to people and no longer a loner who can just walk away. She also gets to meet up with family, not necessary in a good way, that forces her hand. It was a fun next adventure and I enjoyed the how the challenges set Kate up for some needed self reflection and prioritization of values such as defining human and humanity.

The books keep getting better as I dig deeper into the series. I look forward to more from Kate and wonder what is next for her with so many secrets coming out.

Definitely better than the first one. I liked how this one included a little bit more of the "the Cause" than the first one did. And I loved Lucie and Tristan and found the development of their love and their story to have been executed to perfection. I cannot wait until the third book in this series comes out

Book: Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire
Date Read: 10 November
Rating: 2 stars
How it fits: Wayward Children #5

Review: I've enjoyed this series and I really applaud the intentional inclusion of people not usually represented in mainstream publishing. This one continues to emphasize tolerance and identity with Jill stealing Jack's body in a mind switch which is tearing Jack apart to be in such a "dirty" body due to her OCD. The messages are great for friends to be open to understanding others' realities and being true to yourself and understanding. However this book is only message without any real story at all. Half of the action was just told and even the Moors was not new. There are so many great possibilities with this series and this one was a bit disappointing to visit the Moors and Jack and Jill again with little reason other than to emphasize messages that are probably well received already if the reader has made it to number 5. I will be interested to see where the next one will be set but would probably opt out if it is another repeat.

In Bed with the Devil (Scoundrels of St. James, #1) by Lorraine Heath
Date read: 11th Nov
Rating: ***
How it fits: Set in 1851

Review:
This is a new series by the author titled Scoundrels of St. James, set in 1850's London, I am sure lots of them will appear through the books.

In the first instalment we meet Lucian Langdon, also know as the Devil Earl. He was brought up on the rough street of London, fighting and even killing to survive, his reputation proceeds him. Needing his services Lady Catherine Mabry tried to befriend him but both get more than they bargained for.

I enjoyed the book, it got a little repetitive in places but the mix of humour and bodice ripping moments kept my interest. I listened to the audiobook version, maybe if I have read the book I wouldn't have thought this. Both characters are very easy to like, as are the few characters that have cameos mostly Lucians friends, some from his past life. I am sure they will appear in the later books with their own stories.

The Shelters of Stone by Jean M. Auel

Date read: 14th Nov
Rating: ***
How it fits: #5 in Series

Review: I seriously think this series gets worse and worse the more books she writes. I loved the first book and second book, but three and four I tolerated. Now I'm just like what's the point because it read more like stone age softcore porn with recaps of everything that happened in the previous four books. It was pretty disappointing. Plus it took her 12 years to write this book, so like what was the hold up? Did she have to reread her work so she could remember what she wrote? I don't get it at all.....
