MountainKat | 31770 comments I think most of you know each other, at least a little, but feel free to introduce yourself again. Please give any relevant information, especially time zone as that helps know when it is best to communicate. 😊

Please select a team leader to help keep track of where your team is in any given task. And as necessary guide discussions for task decisions. Any teammate can report your completions though.

Remember, it is the team's responsibility to notify the host (me) if a teammate fails to complete the task in a timely manner or otherwise goes missing! I am not checking all the team threads regularly to notice and may only check when notified a task is complete.

PS - If you want to be known as anything other than Team 16, you are free to come up with a team name. 😉

D.G. | 4477 comments Hi All,

I'm D.G. I'm 43, widowed with no children and live in Brooklyn, NY. I work in Marketing and have been working from home since March of this year (and will likely stay this way until next year.)

I used to do a lot of challenges back in the day but not as much anymore so I'm trying to get into the swing of things. If you're checking my bookshelf, you'll see I have all sorts of genres in there but my reading has changed A LOT in the last 3 years taking a look at book reads in 2020 will give you a better inkling of what I read.

I listen almost exclusively audiobooks and I get them from Audible Escapes, two very good libraries or my TBL (which is huge.) I could buy audiobooks if needed but that would be my last resort.

I can be team captain - I saved some spots up top so we can keep track of our reads. Also, we need to align on some tasks that require agreement. I've been stalking other posts and the feeling is that the first task will require collaboration.

Oh and we need a team name! Any suggestions?

message 14: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments If you have restrictions as to how to pick books i.e. I only read books I own, the library, TBR, etc. please post here so we can take that into account. Given that we'll need to agree on some tasks though, everybody will need to be flexible. :)

Assuming the task will be selected somewhat in order, let's discuss the first 3 tasks that require some decision making:

1. Each player reads a book by the same author, teams decide author - no pass for this task. I suggest we read popular authors who have published lots of books (who aren't FAC)
- Contemporary: Lauren Blakely, Vi Keeland, Penelope Ward, Shayla Black, Elle Kennedy
- PNR/UF: Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Nalini Singh
9. Each player reads a book in the same series, teams decide. No pass for this task. Again, I think we should pick a popular series with lots of books. Some examples:
- Psy-Changeling, Kate Daniels, Breeds, Winston Brothers
Or we can all agree to read the first book in one series we haven't read. Open to either way.
27. Read a minimum of 750 pages in books published in any one year prior to 2018, team picks the year. Anything from 2015-2017 sounds good to me (going by what may be easier to get...)

Nicole | 629 comments Hello everyone. My name is Nicole Beer. I live in Virginia. I work in Healthcare so my job has not slowed down at all. I am very flexible with what I read. I usually read one book and listen to another. im not a fast reader. I did this challenge the last time and really enjoyed it. I am married and have 2 kids and 4 animals.

D.G. | 4477 comments Welcome Nicole! Any thoughts on the tasks in post 14? Or team names?

Looking forward to the first task being assigned today. I could probably start right away unless it's one of those tasks that require alignment. :)

I'll be going to Target in the afternoon so should be around when the first task is published this afternoon...

D.G. | 4477 comments Hahaha ok... We can do just book related names, or having to do with 16 or something to do with running (because that's the theme of the challenge.) I sort of like the running theme...what do you think of

Readers Amuck (play on words of running amock hahaha)
Run for Cover or Running for cover?
The Tortoise(s) & The Hare(s) I really like this one but it would make the most sense if we have both fast and slow readers - Nicole, you said you were slow so if either Beth or Suzanne are "fast", this could be a good one...I could be either slow or fast depending on the speed of the fast ones...

D.G. | 4477 comments Ok! Let's see what Beth and Suzanne say - I like Run (or Running) for Cover best of the 3. :)

I made the mistake of washing all my masks and now I'm waiting until they dry before leaving for Target. Not sure I'll be back before 6 but I should be able to check on my phone. Hopefully it's not one of the tasks that require us to agree as a team.

Also, let's start posting some book recommendations for task 12. I'll create a post so we can put them all in there.

I've sent them both messages, hopefully they will show soon!

And the task will probably require some collaboration. 😉 But tasks aren't assigned more frequently than every other day, so starting immediately isn't absolutely necessary. You still have time. 😊

I finally broke down and bought a box of disposable masks to keep in my car - I kept worrying about leaving mine on the table with my grocery list or something! My hubby can text me a pic of my list, but can't help with the mask. And since it is almost an hour drive into town - I didn't want to get stuck!

⚚♆ Cynthia ♆⚚ Hello! I am a newbie in the group and to team challenges but I am very excited to participate. I will read all the rules again so I am all ready, I can't wait for the 1st task!

A bit about myself. My name is Cynthia, I am 31 and I am from Spain but I have been living in the UK for the last 6 years. I work in Commercial Finance in a travel company and, same as D.G., I have been working from home since March.

I usually read around 2-3 books per week. I started reading in English last year so there are many authors that are unknown to me and I am loving the huge variety you can find in this language. In Spanish, the options are more limited. My favourite genres are romance and fantasy. I used to love thrillers but I have read very little of these in the last years.

I am open to everything, I have read many different tropes in romance so I am happy to accommodate if someone has a preference. I have Kindle Unlimited but happy to buy books if required as I usually do a combination of both.

⚚♆ Cynthia ♆⚚ 1. Each player reads a book by the same author, teams decide author - no pass for this task. I suggest we read popular authors who have published lots of books (who aren't FAC)

- PNR/UF: Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Nalini Singh

I have checked some of these authors before and they have books I would be happy to read. If I had to choose one I would pick Elle Kennedy as I have been looking forward to reading The Deal by her. But happy with the others too.

I have only read the first one in the Winston Brothers so I could read the second one. I am happy with the other series.

Two books I am planning to read in the next weeks that are series related are The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer and The Fae Chronicles by Amelia Hutchins.

27. Read a minimum of 750 pages in books published in any one year prior to 2018, team picks the year.
Anything from 2015-2017 sounds good to me (going by what may be easier to get...)

Any year works for me, I have many books in my TBR from those so definitely I will have something to pick up.

⚚♆ Cynthia ♆⚚ For team name I like Readers Amuck the most

⚚♆ Cynthia ♆⚚ First task!

Task 1 for all teams!

0. As a team select your favorite month of 2019 (because 2020 basically SUCKS!) and each player reads a book initially published in that month. No pass for this task.

My favourites were April, May, July and December. Anyone any of those? For me April & May were related to travelling, I went to Morocco and Japan. July and December because I went to Spain and spent two weeks with my family.

I am going to check my TBR to find examples for each month. I will check in the morning which one we go for!

2019 was the worst year of my life - my husband died - so the least worst month for me was April because it was the only time he felt ok. So please let me know if you’re ok to go with that.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer. 😢

D.G. | 4477 comments Thank you ladies. It's been tough. And now that we're on that topic, I can't read super angsty books or books with widows/widowers if they're still grieving so if we need to agree on something to read as a group, those are out.

We have 3/5 majority decision on April so we'll go with that (and that's an easy task so I'm sure it will be easy for Suzanne/Beth to find something.) Remember that we need to go with "first published". Once you post your books, I'll confirm the book works so we don't have any surprises. :)

Nothing But Trouble (Credence, Colorado #1) by Amy Andrews International Player by Louise Bay Every Last Breath (Final Hour #1) by Juno Rushdan

All published April 2019.

Not picking one book because my reading is cray cray and I'll only know if I like it once I start it. :) So I'll start with Nothing but Trouble and then move from there if I don't like it. :)

⚚♆ Cynthia ♆⚚ I am going for this one for Task 1 that I have for a different reading challenge as well.

D.G. | 4477 comments I PMed Kat to see how we should handle planning given that neither Beth and Suzanne has stopped by. I'll let you know as soon as she responds.

In the meantime, we can start planning for task #12: Read a book recommended to you by a teammate - no pass for this task. (I'll create a separate post for this task.) I figured we can list 5-10 books we recommend so we have them handy if that task shows up. Sounds good?

Also, we have two votes for Readers Amuck as the team name. :)

message 39: by MountainKat, Moderator (new)

MountainKat | 31770 comments Hi D.G., Nicole and Cynthia! I was really hoping that both Beth and Suzanne would show up by now - they have been reliable in the past. I will message them again today and if they don't show by tomorrow, I will be forced to eliminate them - it isn't fair to you to have this issue linger longer.

Until then, just continue as you have been and make any decisions necessary. If they don't show, you will continue as a team of 3 and I will adjust tasks as needed. For example if the task is to read 6 books, you would only need to read 5 or if the task is to read 750 pages, you would need to read 600. I would adjust the other way if they both show and you are a team of 5 instead of 4.

D.G., what is it? Not holding your attention? I am quite bad at quitting books that I am not enjoying. I know I should do it more because there are so many books out there waiting...but I just can't hahaha.

I started mine earlier, but I am only a few chapters in. I am going to continue now and try to read a few more before going to sleep!

I will add my recommendations tomorrow for task #12.

Grieving has COMPLETELY changed the way I read. I used to be like you and HAD to finish everything but then I decided to DNF books I don't like - so many books, so little time! I usually write at least a few lines and almost always a review of why I'm DNFing (the reviews could be hilarious if I say so myself...I have a whole shelf. :) But now, it's not even that I'm DNFing books, I just stop reading them and pick up something new. I have now 14 books in progress!! (No worries, I'll keep looking until I find something I really like for the task!)

So for the book I originally started reading: Nothing But Trouble, I can't stop wondering how a person could tie an employee to a 6-year contract with outrageous working hours and tasks (Once, he called her at 3am to buy him condoms! I know the author probably meant that to be funny but I didn't find it). As somebody who works in Corporate America and has a passing knowledge of some labor laws, I can't help but nitpick at things like this and they drive me BUNKERS. It's all I can think about!!

Yes, we're going with April 2019. :)

We haven't talked about pace...how fast do you read? I can read 3-7 books a week when I get going and Nicole is about 2 a week, I think - not sure about Cynthia....being mindful of Nicole, I think we shouldn't take more than 3 days per book but if you read faster, then post as soon as you can so I can take some time to create the completion post, etc. (I haven't done this in a long time!)
