Thaliyah | 19 comments I read the book when I was young in like 5th-6th grade so around the years 2010-2014. It was in my schools library. It was about a girl I remember she had a baby extremely young like 12-14 years old I oddly remember one part of the book she stated she would eat bread rolled up with sugar. She was described as chunky or like being full
Figured although she was so young. Another character i vaguely remember was a boy she was Extremely close with he was also her age. I don’t think she had a good relationship with her parents I’m not entirely sure of the genre I feel like it was fiction but I’m not 100% sure. I think in one part of the book she even ran away once again not 100% sure. But I’m 100% sure she had a baby soooo young & I don’t remember if she kept it

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments Did she end up keeping the baby?

Was the baby a boy or girl?

Was the book mostly about her pregnancy, or after the child was born?

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments In Like Sisters on the Homefront, Gayle already has one baby at 14. She has an abortion the second time she gets pregnant.

message 7: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments I don’t remember if she kept the baby or not and the book wasn’t mostly centered around her having the baby that’s just a Part I Can remember. It was mostly like about her, the girl

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments Thaliyah, have you ruled out all the books suggested above?

message 9: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments Oh sorry yes I’ve ruled those out

message 10: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments Thanks, I'll keep looking!

Was the girl white, black, or Hispanic? Did the book take place in the USA?

Do you remember if she lived in a big city or a suburb or a rural area?

Emmeline

The story of Emmeline Mosher, who, before her 14th birthday, was sent from her home on a farm in Maine to support her family by working in a cotton mill in Massachusetts. The year was 1839. An extraordinary novel from the "New York Times" bestselling author of "Looking for Mr. Goodbar", the story of a desperate young girl thrust into one of America's early industrial towns is a haunting tale of seduction. Thaliyah | 19 comments I believe it took place in the USA I sadly can’t even remember her race. And I believe she lived in either a city or suburban area thank you! & sadly it’s not Emmeline

message 14: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments Dang it’s not any of those either.

message 16: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments No but the book is written in a similar style with slang and aave in it

message 17: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments That's a good clue! It sounds like the girl was African American then.

I'm assuming it's teen fiction since it was in your school library, but is there any chance it could be adult fiction?

message 18: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments I don’t think it would be adult fiction because it was when I was in either late elementary/middle school when I read it but yes most likely teen fiction

message 19: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments My Life as a Rhombus?

She has an abortion at 14.

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments Damn, I was hoping Broken China would be it.

The girls are older than 14, but I also found Spellbound, Chill Wind, The Dear One, The Test, 2 Days, and A Girl Named Mister.

message 27: by Ava (new)

Ava | 8 comments i think i read this too! probably in like 6th grade? Was the girl raised by different people at different times in her if because her mother was unable to? and did the girl like music that was on old vinyl records from maybe the 50's? If so then i think it either had blue in the title on the cover was bluish. Now I want to know what this is!

message 28: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments Ava yess!!!! & unfortunately the books proposed above aren’t it

message 29: by Ava (new)

Ava | 8 comments Yeah I looked them over. I will keep looking as I now really want to now too.

message 30: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments Ava, do you also remember the girl being African American?

Can you recall anything more about the girl's family situation? Was she in foster care or living with relatives? Did she have siblings? Do you remember what happened to the baby?

message 31: by Ava (new)

Ava | 8 comments I think she thought of herself as African American, but I don't think she knew her father and her mother wasn't. She wasn't in foster care except for maybe some type of similar system when she was younger than 10 or so, and had no other family members mentioned. She stayed with "friends" of her mom for a while but she ran away from there first, before she got pregnant. they didn't like her or want her living with them I don't think. I believe she gave the baby to the father who was her childhood best friend before he moved away. And her mother reenters the girl's life toward the end of the book.

message 33: by Ava (new)

Ava | 8 comments It's not that. :(

Note: Thaliyah is the OP (original poster), so we don't get confused.

message 35: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments Yeah that sounds familiar I believe we’re thinking of the same book! I don’t remember her being in foster care either I just know she like moved around quite a bit

message 36: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments Waiting for June?

The MC is biracial, but seems way too old.

message 37: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments Nope not it :( like Ava said I believe the title had blue in it &/or the cover was blue as well

message 39: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments Not it :(

message 40: by Kat (new)

Kat (tadpoledrain) | 549 comments So this is definitely an adult book and not YA but just in case, any chance it's Push (which the movie Precious was based on)?
Check out this book on Goodreads: Push https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7...

message 41: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments It's gotta be out there somewhere!

Little Wing?

Make Lemonade?

Having Faith in the Polar Girls' Prison?

These don't seem like really good candidates, though.

message 42: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments Definitely not push & none of those either

message 43: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments Is 2014 definitely the latest possible year you could have read it?

message 44: by Ava (new)

Ava | 8 comments I don’t know about the original poster of this , but I think I read it between 2015-2016.

message 45: by Thaliyah (new)

Thaliyah | 19 comments Yeah 2014 was the latest possible time I could’ve read it because I did not read it in high school I’m 100% sure of that

message 46: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments Did it seem like a new book at the time, or could it have been older, like from the '80s or '90s?

"I'd eat the crust first and then roll up the rest into a ball, dip it into the sugar bowl, and suck on it, getting all the sweet out of it, and then I'd eat it down and start on another one."

message 48: by Ava (new)

Ava | 8 comments I don't know about the original poster of this, but the plot synapsis seems familiar to me, but the cover is not what I remember and I couldn't find an edition of this book with a different cover.

message 49: by Eugene (new)

Eugene Kuznetsov | 54 comments What did your cover look like?

message 50: by Ava (new)

Ava | 8 comments I can't remember exactly, but I have a very vague image in my head and it wasn't a girl sitting in a chair.
