I've actually been wanting to ask you about a book you've read. The Princess Trials, was it any good? I've seen an equal amount of reviews of people either loving it or hating it so I wasn't sure about reading it. I also saw that you read Ember Queen, which reminded me that I haven't read it yet despite how much I loved the first two books lol!

CB (cb33) | 404 comments Question - I was reading back through the rules, and under Children, for beverages, it says they will drink “juice and water” and Teenagers will drink “soda/soft drinks”. I had been trying to provide a variety for the kids to drink to cover all potential options so I just listed Chocolate Milk, Grape Kool-Aid, and Smoothies (thinking of real life), but if these won’t work, I can change these to juice and Coke. Is it really that literal?

Well kool-aid would definitely be considered a juice. Smoothies I'm thinking juice as well since they can be made with juice. The chocolate milk though I'm not sure about. I did see in the question forum that the mods would take iced-tea as a soda for teenagers since it has caffeine and sugar so I suppose they could take chocolate milk as a juice for kids.

CB (cb33) | 404 comments Thanks for the feedback, Jenn - I have a bunch of food/drink options in this book, so I’ll just change the chocolate milk and smoothie ones into other food options - I know “juice” and “Coke” had been meal options available from the book as well.

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments Sadly not much reference to food in the book I’m reading. Hopefully the next one will be better.

message 106: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments I just ordered a couple of vampirish books that I really want to read. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that there are food options.

message 107: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments I'm reading a book that hasn't mentioned any food either, so I'm keeping track of the names to use it for spell-it-out. Though so far there has only been 6 characters >.<

don't forget the title and the first & last name of the author count too!

The Princess Trials was really good. I thought it was going to be typical YA sappy but it's got a lot more edge to it!

Just finished Ember Queen. I liked the other books better but i can't NOT read the last book of a trilogy haha. Definitely worth tying up the loose ends.

Vamp books are very in season haha. I don't think I've read anything with vamps since Discovery of Witches. Let us know if you really like any!

now that it's been a bit, how are you feeling about the challenge?

message 112: by Jenn (last edited Oct 14, 2020 11:52AM) (new)

Jenn | 209 comments I've cleaned up the food items spreadsheet and got rid of the books that have been used up. That way it's easier to see what ingredients are still left.

Make sure to use at least 1 food item or spell-it-out from each book. If a book is unused, we'll be deducted points. Nothing is allowed to be added or switched around once the round ends.

And as a reminder, the round ends this Saturday the 17th at 9pm UTC time. Which is:
10pm London
5pm New York
4pm Dallas
2pm San Francisco

Which brings me to the question, where is everyone from? I'm in Arizona, US :)

Oh and one last thing; the challenge page was updated with a "food critic" that will be scoring each restaurant for:
* Names of the dishes served
* Ability to feed all customers
* Low food wastage
* Name and description of restaurant
Depending on our score, we'll have a chance to attract more adults to the restaurant.

message 113: by Kim (new)

Kim | 68 comments That means we need a description of our restaurant! Does all our food need to be line with our theme/style?

I’m from Massachusetts US 😊

Jenn | 209 comments Kim wrote: "That means we need a description of our restaurant! Does all our food need to be line with our theme/style?

I'm not sure if we'll score better with the food critic if our meals follow a theme. I've just been using the names of recipes I've found online. Maybe out restaurant description could be something along the lines of "we don't follow the rules of society so we'll serve whatever we want, and don't be so hasty to judge our food".

message 115: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments CB, I noticed a problem with your meals 40 and 72. You used characters' first 'and' last names for separate items. The rule is that you use the first 'or' last name. So each character can actually only be used once. Are you able to fix those meals? If not, I have a book that will and I can speed read it real quick.

Thanks, Jenn - I just fixed those. I didn’t realize it had to be either/or.

BTW, I’m from Northeast Ohio.

CB (cb33) | 404 comments Thanks for cleaning up the food items spreadsheet, Jenn. Looking at our restaurant sheet, it looks like we have a couple books that either have a number of words still that could be completed that are not listed on the food items spreadsheet - or I see one completed book listed that doesn’t have any food items listed on either sheet. Can we try to get those filled in? Or if not, for the book that has none on either sheet, maybe delete that posting and replace it with a different book we are reading?

Good idea. I'd hate for us to lose out on points because we have books listed that we didn't use.

Sorry about that. I should have been more specific when I explained the rules. At least you were able to fix it.

message 122: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments Thanks for cleaning up the spreadsheet Jenn. I need to catch up on my entries, so I'll do that tonight.

I know we're close to our total number. We can replace #28 - Dear Laura if we need to.

I'm in Atlanta, Ga!

message 123: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments What does everyone think about this as our restaurant's description?

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single person in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a good meal. So we prepare a variety of meals from around the world. After all there is no enjoyment like tasting a meal from a world unlike your own. How much sooner one tires of the same food over and over. When you go back to your home, you shall be miserable if you have not an excellent, varied menu such as ours.

message 129: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments Kim wrote: "If we started a book this week but don’t finish by the deadline tomorrow can we use it for round 2?"

No. Books for round 2 have to be started on round 2's start date and time unfortunately. Round 2 begins as soon as round 1 ends.

message 130: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments Kim, are you going to be able to finish your book? If not, I finished another manga I could put in that slot.

message 131: by Vian (new)

CB (cb33) | 404 comments Jenn wrote: "Kim, are you going to be able to finish your book? If not, I finished another manga I could put in that slot."

I think this ends in a little over an hour, correct? I haven’t seen an update yet for Kim’s book so it still shows an unfinished, so I think we should go ahead and fill in that posting with a completed book. Jenn, if you want to fill in your manga, that’s great, and if not, I have a book that I finished this morning that would work.

Yeah it's ending soon. I've been watching the spreadsheet to see if she manages to swoop in at the last minute with her book finished. My manga will give us 4 ingredients, would your book give us more than that?

message 135: by Kim (new)

Kim | 68 comments So sorry team! I got so close to finishing this, 50 pages left(stupid work got in the way today). Thanks for keeping an eye out for me!

message 137: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments Books for round 2 can be started now and the food items spreadsheet has been cleared for new meals. Happy reading everyone!

message 138: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments Thanks Jenn!

message 139: by Kim (new)

Kim | 68 comments When customers arrive who decides what meals are eaten by which customer?
Is there a window of time the customers need to “eat” by?

message 140: by Kim (new)

Kim | 68 comments Ok found one of the answers: we have 48 hours to feed them (and we can continue reading for round 2).

Who would like to feed the people?

message 141: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments Kim wrote: "Ok found one of the answers: we have 48 hours to feed them (and we can continue reading for round 2).

Oops, I didn't realize we'd select someone. I noticed the spreadsheet was updated so I started doing it. Would someone else like to do it instead?

message 142: by CB (new)

CB (cb33) | 404 comments I am fine with that, Jenn, if you are comfortable doing so. And then we can all review to make sure we are in agreement.

I see that we have 160 customers, and only 151 meals, so assuming we are able to allocate everything we are going to be short 9 meals for customers.

This says to me for Round 2 we need to try to read more 300+ and 500+ page books, to maximize those 8 and 12 meal ingredients. Just my thoughts.

message 143: by Kim (new)

Kim | 68 comments I agree with CB on both counts!

message 144: by Namita (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments Agree with CB!!

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments I'm not sure if any of you have done the Dewey's readathon before, but its coming up on Saturday the 24th.

It's a 24hr readathon.

message 147: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments Well it looks like the customers are done if everyone wants to review them. And I do agree with CB and longer books. I'm going to attempt more 300+ books.

Nusha hasn't participated since she joined. Did everyone want to find a replacement member for her? Or message her first and see?

Vianvamp, I've never heard of the Dewey's readathon before. What is it about?

message 148: by Namita (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments I have bigger books this round. Lots of food mentioned as well.

message 149: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments Jenn wrote: "I've never heard of the Dewey's readathon before. What is it about?"

https://deweysreadathon.wordpress.com...

It's a 24 readathon where everyone starts at the exact same time. They also do an instagram challenge. I like it because everyone really is doing the challenge together, and there's encouragement and book talk across social media platforms.

message 150: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments I've had volunteer events this whole weekend so I haven't been able to start anything yet. I'm planning on starting Truly Devious later tonight or tomorrow for the BOM bonus. I had started Dracula before the round ended, but maybe I can switch over to the audio book and just start that book over. I'd hate to waste a 400 pg book.

Nusha hasn't participated since she joined. Did everyone want to find a replacement member for her? Or message her first and see?
I'm fine either way. At this point she's been gone for two weeks so is she really still participating? We might as well put feelers out into the looking group.
