I last read this children's book when I was about 5 years old in the 70's. I think the main character was an elf boy named Ziggy but I'm not sure. The character catches musical notes with a butterfly net of all the sounds he hears daily and saves them all in a box. At the end of the book it is night and he opens the box to let the music notes out so he can listen to all the things he heard that day as he goes to sleep in bed. This is one of my most favorite books from my childhood and I'd love to find it for my little Niece and Nephew now.
