SOLVED. Boy learns magic but it has dangerous consequences - 1990's? [s]

Read early around 94-95. Think it was called something like Spellbinder or Spellbound, but I can't find the book by that name.
Young boy in secondary(?) school learns/is taught how to do simple magic such as levitation with marbles. However when he tries to do something more complex (possibly making them vanish?) there are bad consequences - something else vanishes? Or one of his friends?
No idea of author. Feel like boy's name started with a G - maybe Guy?
