SOLVED. YA (maybe) fiction novel I read about 20ish years ago, but the book might be older. Teenage girl lives next door to a maybe married couple. Husband abuses wife and teenage girl wants to help here. Warning, Spoilers in comments. [s]

This book has been driving me crazy for years. I am not even sure at this point If maybe I dreamed it and it actually doesn’t exist! I maybe read this book when I was in my early teens so about 20ish years ago, but I am not positive if the book was published earlier than that. There is a teenage girl and I think she may have recently moved into a new house where she befriends her female next door neighbor. She finds out that her neighbor’s husband is abusive and wants to help the neighbor escape. That part is not the spoiler because it is the premise of the novel, but this next part is the spoiler....during all of this, she meets a boy and they start dating. He is involved in trying to help said neighbor escape and towards the end of the book (okay here is the spoiler).........

The husband comes home or is home when they try to get the neighbor woman out. Some kind of fight ensues and boyfriend of teenage girl gets pushed down the stairs, breaks his neck, and dies. I don’t remember what happens after that but I think neighbor woman goes and lives with her sister maybe. Don’t remember cover of the book at all. Thanks everyone in advance!!
