My memory is really vague so any kind of similarity is 100% welcomed.

Getting out part is not so accurate. I read it around 2017 but I'm pretty sure the book is older than that. I think he finds a girl while traveling for different reason and her family was the rich upper class people. If I remember correctly there was some kind of virtual reality device. I remember this scene where one guy who was a gang leader and his brain stopped working a long time ago but he was still kind of alive because of virtual reality device. And I remember at the start of the book there was an old man who was writing a book or possibly a memoir. I think the story was set in a world where book was extremely rare.
