From Friday January 23rd at 12.01am (in your local time zone), you start keeping track of how many pages you read until Sunday January 25th at 11.59pm. In January Read-a-thon thread you will post your progress, telling everyone what you're reading and how many pages. Then all readers' totals will be tallied on the Monday to reach the goal of 20,000 pages. This is a relaxed read-a-thon; it doesn't matter if you read 20 pages or 100, it also doesn't matter if we reach our goal, it's just having fun doing what you would normally be doing anyway:)

Once the thread is posted in book Chat, make sure reply to the event or put your name on the thread if you would like to be included. If you simply stumble onto the thread, then please, join in!
As for the last read-a-thons, better to keep track of all numbers, we change the first post we write in the discussion, so each of us has only one and not 2000 as before!!!!

*An easy way to keep track is using the Currently Reading feature on Goodreads, entering your page number at the end of each day.

**For those who read by eReader, take the page number which shows for paperback/hardcover here on Goodreads for your total.Calculate by percentage to work out your page number read.

***For audio listeners, check out how many pages the book has on Goodreads, then divide that number by how many CDs or hours it is to give you an idea of pages per time.

I pledged to read Indian Summer of a Forsyte for 4 hours -- that will give me a good leg up on the readalong :D

Just to clarify, that would be folks in the US, I imagine, since it is 'national' and not 'international', and their mission is 'to expand the audience for literature in America'.

Exactly! I'm promoting the National Readathon as well. What better gift than the gift of reading? Start your fundraising page now!

message 30: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) It's a great initiative. I love things like that. What I meant was it seems to be for people in the US only, rather than for all of us. Unless there is an equivalent for other countries?

Aha, I see. I can ask.

Gail, I believe you are eligible to participate no matter where you live, but proceeds from the event will benefit the promotion of literacy in the U.S. I received this response from Ben Samuel at the National Book Foundation:

"Our focus is on literature and reading in the US. But we'd never discourage anyone from joining the Readathon, regardless of location."

message 35: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Well, I am not doing any fundraising nor was I asked to when I signed up through here. In fact, there was no discussion of any financial aspects on the Goodreads blog post. I am now a bit concerned... :(

message 36: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) Leslie, on the link you posted, it said:

'National Readathon Day is a nationwide marathon reading session on Saturday, January 24th from noon-4 PM (in respective time zones), and a fundraiser for The National Book Foundation’s literacy programs.'

Nothing wrong with fundraising for American literacy though - although I think they should specify it's for the US, rather than just calling it 'National' - as of course the meaning of 'national' depends on what country you're in!

But I do like the idea of people throughout the world all reading for four hours, from noon to 4pm, in their own timezones! Although if it's just reading and not fundraising, there's no reason why it can't be international and raise awareness of the importance of literacy worldwide.

The Readathon weekend does not mean you are fundraising.

I love the idea of readers across the globe all reading - together - separately - for a few hours. Having been a bookworm since the age of 3 - and eschewing many outdoor and crowd activities in favor of reading, the idea of a readathon makes me think some other little bookworm doesn't have to feel as lonely as I did back then.
