Just to clarify, that would be folks in the US, I imagine, since it is 'national' and not 'international', and their mission is 'to expand the audience for literature in America'.

Exactly! I'm promoting the National Readathon as well. What better gift than the gift of reading? Start your fundraising page now!

Aha, I see. I can ask.

Gail, I believe you are eligible to participate no matter where you live, but proceeds from the event will benefit the promotion of literacy in the U.S. I received this response from Ben Samuel at the National Book Foundation:
"Our focus is on literature and reading in the US. But we'd never discourage anyone from joining the Readathon, regardless of location."

And - just to show how easy it is - here's a link to my own fundraising page:
http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser...

'National Readathon Day is a nationwide marathon reading session on Saturday, January 24th from noon-4 PM (in respective time zones), and a fundraiser for The National Book Foundation’s literacy programs.'
Nothing wrong with fundraising for American literacy though - although I think they should specify it's for the US, rather than just calling it 'National' - as of course the meaning of 'national' depends on what country you're in!
But I do like the idea of people throughout the world all reading for four hours, from noon to 4pm, in their own timezones! Although if it's just reading and not fundraising, there's no reason why it can't be international and raise awareness of the importance of literacy worldwide.

The Readathon weekend does not mean you are fundraising.

The reading is worldwide! What reader wouldn't want to be part of that? It's a great way to feel connected!

I love the idea of readers across the globe all reading - together - separately - for a few hours. Having been a bookworm since the age of 3 - and eschewing many outdoor and crowd activities in favor of reading, the idea of a readathon makes me think some other little bookworm doesn't have to feel as lonely as I did back then.
I don't quite understand what I'd have to actually do if I joyn - a part the found raising bit ...
Anyway I've added the others in the list at the beginning of this thread. Remember all to update your message with the pages, so next monday I'll count only those ones - and still make confusion I'm sure!!!

Total page counts for Friday, Saturday, Sunday? I will definitely read on Saturday and maybe post counts for the other days. That's ok, right?

The idea is just to read as much as you can. I'm busy all day Saturday but will try post as many pages as I can

Once the thread is posted in book Chat, make sure reply to the event or put your name on the thread if you would like to be included. If you simply stumble onto the thread, then please, join in!
As for the last read-a-thons, better to keep track of all numbers, we change the first post we write in the discussion, so each of us has only one and not 2000 as before!!!!
*An easy way to keep track is using the Currently Reading feature on Goodreads, entering your page number at the end of each day.
**For those who read by eReader, take the page number which shows for paperback/hardcover here on Goodreads for your total.Calculate by percentage to work out your page number read.
***For audio listeners, check out how many pages the book has on Goodreads, then divide that number by how many CDs or hours it is to give you an idea of pages per time.
