I read this book series in the mid late 80's when I was a third-fifth grader. As I remember it, it was set in a world where robots were common, and indistinguishable from humans, other than a stiff legged gait (they mayve been mute but I'm not positive). The series centered around a young boy that was obsessed with the robots and could mimic them perfectly.

This sounds like the My Robot Buddy by Alfred Slote.

"On Jack Jameson's 10th birthday, his family gives him a robot that can do everything Jack can do - and more.' - "

The stiff legged running robot is a definite part of the story as is Jack's ability to pretend to be a robot.
