I don't know the ins and outs of the Chris Kaba story, Philip, but the MET is in an absolute mess.

Firstly, their vetting procedures are a shambles because criminals are getting into their ranks en masse.

Secondly, as in this case, the rank and file don't appear to enjoy the confidence of their superiors.

The public are losing respect for them and morale must be at an all-time low. Root and branch reform required.

Saw the story, J. This is representative of a big problem in Canada and elsewhere in Woke World.

In their simplistic desire to follow their doctrine, which is a world of black and white with no shades of grey, they airbrush inconvenient facts and expect everyone else to do the same.

There was never any need to gloss over elements of history to make Ukraine look good and Russia bad, because the current situation tells you all you need to know about why Ukraine deserves our full support.

All the Canadians have achieved is to feed Russian propaganda and make themselves a laughing stock. Mind you, what do you expect when they're led by the Newsom of the North?

Honk! Honk!

This one is beyond the pale. Herr Hunka was a member of the Waffen SS. These guys were devout followers of Nazi doctrine. I guarantee that he spent decades hiding the blood group tattoo on his arm, except around other former SS.

He gets applause, but those who protested against Trudeau's draconian Coof power grab are labeled "Nazis". WT LITERAL F?

message 2504: by [deleted user] (new)

They don't know the meaning of the word nazi. Like that imbecillic CoS who compared Trump to Hitler. Their foolishness at bandying these terms and names around to denigrate their enemies simply softens peoples attitudes to what happened 80 years ago. Tbh, I think they do it because they're thick rather than evil.

Anyway, if you want the Russian take on it, here you go:

J. Gowin | 7977 comments My knee jerk reaction is that Hunka was invited by an idiot who heard that Hunka had fought the Russians in WWII. Because the hamster fell off the wheel, broke its neck, and left a post mortem defecation across the inside of his skull, it never occurred to the idiot WHO was fighting the Russians in WWII.

This episode can't be brushed under the carpet. Trudeau is unfit for office. His crimes now include:

1. Black facing.
Once accepted as funny, but for a long time now rightly regarded as completely unacceptable because it is hugely insulting to a significant number of our fellow citizens.

2. Dressing up in nazi regalia at a fancy dress party.

3. Freezing the Bank accounts and trying to cancel the LIVES of people who protested against his draconian covid laws, before somehow going beyond even gaslighting to accuse THEM of being nazis.

4. Now, under his watch, a former member of the Waffen SS is invited to the Canadian Parliament and applauded.

Trudeau is an absolute disgrace! He simply has to go. I challenge anyone who supports him to come on here and try to account for his actions.

Ian Miller | 1857 comments Someone from the UK can correct me, but I was under the impression that the big problem with Boris was he subsequently lied about it to parliament. That is a big no-no, and is not forgivable here either. As for breaking his own corona mandates, we had a Minister lose his job because he broke his own mandate, and that merely involved going for a bike ride in the wilderness.

Praising someone from the Waffen SS borders on the "too inept to govern".

Nik, if Boris had simply had a party, I wouldn't give a damn. But this is the man who MADE the rules, broke the rules and then lied on numerous occasions about breaking them to Parliament.

His rules put people out of business, left old folk to die alone without family support, wrecked children's education, and more. But that didn't matter to him. Rules don't apply to Boris, even when he makes them. He went on the piss with his mates instead. He is an absolute bloody disgrace!!!

And this episode was the tip of the iceberg. He presided over an absolutely chaotic government, which staggered from one shambolic farce to another. He was completely out of his depth.

If you want to know what Boris is like as a human being, speak to mild-mannered, moderate journalist Max Hastings, who worked with him and normally wouldn't say boo to a goose. He'll tell you what Boris is really all about, which is being a lying charlatan.

The guy we have in charge now isn't perfect but he's a lot better. He's pretty likeable and comes across as highly competent. And, as your mate in London said, politics is now about policy not personality. Just as it should be.

Nik, unless the boy is mentally unwell, and providing there's no as yet unknown angle to the story, he should get the birch. Publically.

I appreciate you think the Boris story is trivial when there's war in Ukraine and other places in the world. I'm also not particularly one to demand the highest possible moral standards from politicians either - see posts on the Trump thread as proof.

But I'm sorry, there's no forgiveness from me for the politicians who imposed lockdowns and flirted with mandatory covid vaccinations. They went to war, not with tanks but psychologically and financially, on their own people, while moralising like Ghandi in public. Going to war on your own people is even more unforgiveable than going to war on another country, and the most vulnerable people are always the ones who get hurt or worse in these cases.

I celebrate whenever one of these politicians is found out for being a lying hypocrite and then forced out. Trudeau is next on the list.

I agree with Beau on this one. If you set the rules, you need to follow them also. You can agree to disagree on any given topic, but everyone needs to follow the rules otherwise it becomes chaos. It is this double standard that drives me nuts.

Philip (phenweb) Current UK news dominated by announcements from Conservative conference. None of which fill me with any expectation they will be delivered. These are the alternatives to spending on HS2 rail line. Several already falling apart a day after announcement.

Overnight Labour won a by-election in Scotland from the SNP (On low turnout). Labour needs to do a lot of that in the General Election to be competitive. That would be in normal election routine not as is likely when Conservatives are probably going to get a worse than 1997 shock

Rail news continues

Legal cases launched on changes to Green policy

Live facial recognition tech being challenged.

message 2535: by [deleted user] (new)

Along with scaling back HS2, the other big story is the PM's plan to copy the Ardern policy of upping the age of smoking by 1 year, every year, until it is eventually phased out.

This isn't a very Conservative thing to do. It's something I'd associate with goody goody nanny states.

4 things on this:

1. What is it with this 'war' on smoking? Gambling and alcohol can ruin a person's life in a v short space of time, yet smoking takes decades to have any meaningful effect. And if you're determined to try and save people from themselves over the course of their lifetimes, why not declare 'war' on the fatties' cream cakes instead?

2. The loudest voices for banning smoking seem to be the same people who want to legalise cannabis. Figure that one out. Haven't those dippy weed heads ever smoked a spliff?

3. Smokers die sooner and pay an awful lot of tax on their cigarettes. Forget any stats commissioned by the anti smoking lobby, it is basic common sense that they are net financial contributors to the Government/ NHS. Who's going to make up the financial shortfall?

4. Don't these politicians have something better to do than going after smokers?

It made a nice headline, like the proposed never going to happen changes to education. The rail/transport policy is unravelling faster than it can be briefed. The document's northern rail included a road from Bognor Regis to Southampton which has now be corrected to Littlehampton which is on the south coast last time I looked. The plan for a metro in Bristol has already disappeared from the Gov web site after <48hrs alongside another northern rail site. As far as I know Bristol is also not in the north like tens of other projects announced. think i mentioned the two Manchester metro extensions that already exist and are open but will have funding to build them....

J, those Schwarzenegger and Stallone films were brilliant. They were like prophesies. If you haven't seen or read Harry Potter, look up a character called Dolores Umbridge. She is the type of person who would be behind this policy.

Mark my words, the move from rule by original thinkers and mavericks to head girl types will spell doom for the West. Cushy times breed weak leaders and all that.

We disagree on optimal size of government, but this sort of government intervention is IMO completely unnecessary. It's nothing but spite and bullying by people without enough imagination to use their time in governance productively.

Philip, rail is the way to go for me. Numerous reasons, including environmental. Every time I see rail projects cancelled and new roads built, I shake my head sadly. And more roads appear to make no difference. Car journeys in UK increasingly mean going nowhere fast.

Like Scout, I am finding politics demoralising. There's a feeling of inevitability about the way we're heading. I enjoy chatting to people on this forum (it's why I do it) but an interest in politics is not good for the health. Rail not helped by endless union action at the moment. If you were an investor (Government or private) would you buy? The private contractors have made a mint and delivered little. My problem with HS 2 was that it wasn't joined to HS1 in St Pancras.

If it had been we had potential of Manchester (why not go to Glasgow and Edinburgh) through to Paris/Amsterdam/Brussels rest of Europe. Complete failure. Other countries have built and delivered cheaper than HS2. Don't get me started on 3rd runways....

J, I have a dream where governments make proportionate interventions in the economy to aid their citizens, provide a safety net to those who have fallen on hard times, provide the essential services of a 1st World country, maintain control of borders and send diplomatic representatives to other countries to maintain healthy relations. Other than that, they leave us alone. Why, in practice, has this now become impossible to do? We've sent man to the moon for pity's sake, so why can't we organise common sense government?

Philip, good points on trains and planes. Wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm lukewarm on the rail strikes. They're already well paid but the proposed changes to staffing and working conditions are bad news for customer service and safety.
