If you're not in the U.S., what's up in your part of the world?
As usual, I am in the minority. As a boy, I recall the change of head on the coins, and all those George VI coins started to disappear.
Interesting facts, Papaphilly and J. And great to hear from you, Philip! A very dignified and moving post.
Over the next few weeks, I'll be taking occasional breaks from mourning to keep a close eye on pages 2 - the sports section of the newspapers because it's going to be a very good time to bury bad (but important) news.

I just put some Canadian Elizabeth II coins into envelopes. Y'all might want to do the same.

That said, Jordan B. Peterson recently made some interesting comments on the matter.

Yes, but things have changed since Paine. The British King has effectively no power; he does not inflict economic pain and judicial tyrrany. What the system actually does is make citizens look carefully at their own government, and the government has a sort of moral obligation not to be tyrannical, and in principle the Governor General can block absolutely tyrranical moves. On the other hand, go to a Republic, and in principle nothing changes, except that sometimes, like Zimbabwe, you get a President for life who is far from benign.
Please watch the video which I linked above. Peterson rambles a bit but he makes a far stronger argument in favor of the British Monarchy.
The one thing the monarchy does in its current form is it acts to calm governments while it itself does nothing. In my life, I can't think of anything the monarch has actually done here except make visits, and you can't get much more harmless than that. If there were a move to become a republic, which may well happen, first, it would make no difference to parliament - we already have the republic form of elections - but we would then also have a whole lot of politicians trying to carve out little gravy trains for themselves, and a President who wants even more. At the moment our system aint broke, so I don't want to see any attempts to fix it. I think i am more or elss in line with Peterson on that.
Leaving royalty alone for a sec, there are very real aristocrats populating a house of lords with much more practical powers than just honorary. Ruling blue blood won't be accepted by some nations, however it's the biz of the Kingdom.
The House of Lords is a bit of a historical anomaly, but it does act as a restraining organization to stop silly legislation. They can't stop it overall, though. The US has a senate, which has much more ability to stop stuff. It might be elected, but some of them seem to be somewhat permanent. Australia has a senate, with a lot more elected parties, Not sure why that happens. NZ has NO upper house. I guess it comes down to to what works for you is OK. My personal view is there is no ideal system - the trick is to get the politicians to make whatever they have work.

According to our news, there is serious criticism from within Iran, which is more significant. I doubt the Ayatollahs give anything to what the West says.
Big UK news of potential interest to non-UK group members, who may well not have heard about it...
There has been significant violence between Hindus and Muslims in Leicester, England, which has now spread to Smethwick, near Birmingham (the city in which I was born). White people are now a minority in both Leicester and Birmingham.
What is the history of immigration to the UK and what has caused this new wave of violence?
Basically, large scale immigration began in the late 1940s. Although there were obviously teething troubles, race relations have progressed over the years to such an extent that it's fair to say the UK leads the world in multiculturalism.
Forget what your newspapers and the BLM crew tell you, visit any British town or city and you will generally see different races and cultures living comfortably side by side. Different races are well represented in politics, medicine, the law, business, and all other desirable professions. Friendships and relationships seamlessly cross racial boundaries.
Then why the trouble now, you may ask? Basically, thanks to our politicians' desire for uncontrolled immigration, in order to undermine the concept of the nation state, newcomers have arrived, who have no respect for their community elders.
That's almost 80 years of hardwork and assimilation thrown into jeapody by the usual suspects...those virtue signalling, progressive imbeciles, who, on a wide range of issues, are now doing everything in their power to destroy life as we know it so they can 'build back...you know the rest.

Eruption fears as New Zealand’s Taupo supervolcano’s alert level is raisedhttps://www.news.com.au/technology/sc...
The odds of her popping off in my lifetime are vanishingly small. But after these last few years, it would not surprise me if it both erupted and released Gamera.
If you are into numerology and empirical relationships, Taupo will throw you. A geologist once told me that Taupo tended to erupt in cycles - you get three eruptions separated by 2,000-year intervals, then quiet for something like 30,000 years, then a repeat. It may be that this has been updated with more modern knowledge, but the problem is the three go in the pattern small, intermediate, huge. The one on 232 AD was bigger than intermediate but not huge and was the second. So either we are currently awaiting a monster, or it is quietening down and we are safe for some length of time.Or maybe he was wrong. The problem with this volcano is its caldera is a very large lake. When the volcano starts , 59 cubic km of water falls into the magma. That should lead to an impressive bang.
Coincidentally, one of the clues that led to us figuring out that Yellowstone is a supervolcano was when the swelling magma chamber moved a lake.
Those who had colonies opened their borders for immigration to all or most former colonies. There will be little Spaniards in Morocco, but many Moroccans in Spain or France or elsewhere. I've nothing against any group, however when a society becomes heterogenic, multireligious and multicultural, allowing for a current air, the frictions may intensify, especially if encouraged by interested parties. I can understand Slovaks or others, who refuse to open their borders to other nations.
Britain has integrated people of Commonwealth descent far better than other European countries. All sides deserve credit for that. With a few exceptions, there appears to be a shared sense of purpose. In the past, this immigration was controlled. The prob now is that it is out of control, and an element of the newcomers are bringing the prejudices of their homelands to our shores. This needs nipping in the bud.
As many of them are "hungrier" and more ambitious than well fed and decadent Joes, in the ambience of true tolerance (for now) I expect them to be represented disproportionally more in the government than ethnic English. Rishi or likely someone else will be back. Nothing bad in this per se, as long as comradery and unity are preserved...

Great news from Italy, J, and congratulations to Italy's first female PM. Of course, the only reason she's 'far right' is because she believes in family values, liberty and the nation state.
The US needs to take note of her stance on liberty. Not content with blowing up gas pipelines, it is now - through its financial corporations - trying to financially ruin British individuals and organisations who don't tow its sickeningly woke line on a whole range of issues:

Fortunately, the British Government has stepped in (full credit to JRM et al) to remind PayPal that it doesn't govern Britain.
The US under Biden is completely out of control. Forget Putin, Xi and Kim, Biden is the biggest danger of them all.

Nik, once again you fall into the trap of presuming my political views are governed by self interest. Nothing could be further from the truth.
If PayPal closed my account it would be meaningless to me - not even the most minor of inconveniences. I'm fortunate enough to be able to ride the rise in energy prices without it affecting my overall standard of living too. And if they turn off the gas, I'll just light my log fire more regularly. Old man Biden can't touch me - not unless he ends the POTUS 2 term limit and ends up setting a new record by becoming the world's oldest person.
The only reason I share my views on here, apart from enjoying your virtual company, is to try my best to wake you all up to what is really going on in the world. Mine might be a small, unimportant voice in the grand scheme of things, but that's no reason not to at least attempt to bring more truth and honesty to the world's great debates.

I really suggest you better limit your interest to self. Don’t think you can offer anything of help and use to anyone else. As long as you are unaffected, all should be good. Waking up belongs to faction
I'm not sure what's happening here. I agree with Beau that uncontrolled borders are not good. We have one in this country, and it's allowing cartels to import deadly drugs into our country. Terrorists are walking over our border and disappearing into the country. Human traffickers are bringing in vulnerable people, and who knows what happens to them? There's no vetting, no follow-up on who's coming in. How can this be a good thing?
Nevertheless, if the boundary is big enough, it is hard to stop people crossing it. Think of all the people who got out of East Germany, and that was protected by electrified wire fences, minefields, machine gun nests, dog patrols, and soldiers. And I doubt Americans would want to go to Stasi-like attempts.
Actually, three years ago, the border was controlled as well as could be because of Trump's policies. Mexico was cooperating and keeping people in Mexico until they could be vetted. The fences were closed and border patrol agents were patrolling and stopping people. Now they open the fence even on private property. I know it's difficult to believe what's going on at our border because no news outlets except Fox even acknowledge a problem. But watch this. It's just one of many crazy things going on here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvrFS...
Maybe this should get its own thread, but I don't know. There's massive speculation Credit Suisse is on the verge of collapse. Their stock is down 60% this year. They suffered massive losses both last year and this year. And they're preparing to unveil a plan that may include selling off assets and laying off staff. The stock is down 10% in today's early morning trading.

If we see a massive collapse of institutions of this caliber, it will necessitate opening a new thread indeed. Lets see what happens
Down to the trivial level, CostCo opened a new store in Auckland - a first entry for the company. The first day was something of a disaster - the fire alarms went off and everyone had to flee (no idea if they took stuff with them). No, not sabotage from a competitor - instead they were trying to sell freshly cooked chicken and somehow the chicken cooking set off the alarms.

The simplest way to put it is that yesterday 90% of the world population had never known another monarch on the British throne.
