SOLVED. YA Series - teens growing up on an island, boat crash, love. [s]

I can’t remember this series! But it was several books all about teens growing up on an island or near a coast. There was a tragic boat crash where someone died, lots of mystery. Kids took a ferry to school.

I read this in the mid-2000's, but was gifted the series by a cousin who had read it in her teens and she was 10 years older, so I believe it was published in the mid-80s.
