PattyMacDotComma John Lennon by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara is a beaut little kids' book about his life and the Beatles. This is a lovely little tribute to the musical genius we lost to a gunman 40 years ago this month. 40 years!

PattyMacDotComma Tweet-length "fiction". I love, love, love wise sayings, witticisms, simple fun. I am too wordy - these guys are not. A Small Fiction by brothers James Mark Miller and Jefferson Miller is a sheer delight. Funny, clever, excellent!

It's kind of exciting to have a daily ritual and a book that will stay with me until the end of the year :D

message 478: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma My first review for the year is for the worthy Pulitzer Prize winner Beloved by Toni Morrison. It's hard to understand the kind of treatment 'former' slaves still endured after the end of the Civil War.

Technically, it's an easy read; emotionally, it's a heartbreaker.
Beloved by Toni Morrison 5★ Link to my review of Beloved

message 479: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma My first book of 2021 was more lighthearted. We know from the title to look forward to The Great Escape from Woodlands Nursing Home, but it's an after dark innovation suggested by author Joanna Nell that interests me. I do love a good idea.

I really enjoyed it although a cozy set in a retirement home is a little off-genre for me.

This novel is well-crafted and well-researched historical fiction. I found it a powerful story about the role of hope and personal connection in conditions of powerlessness.

Sarah I'm reading The Shadow Rising by Robert Jordan. It's pretty good so far, but it is very long.

I have two other books I am working on - The Making of the Middle Ages by Robert Southern and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling (for a buddy read, and it is totally an old favorite!)

Heather Wescott | 461 comments I'm currently reading Invisible Man and The Map of Salt and Stars.

This week I finished rereading Crime and Punishment and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (first time reading). I liked Crime and Punishment more as an adult than I did in high school - although I think I was unfairly prejudiced against it because I resented having to read it during the summer before my senior year (and take a test the first day of school).
