YA Paranormal Romance (read between 2005-09 but probably much older). Girl has a classmate, a boy who can only occasionally attend. He lives in a cave in the nearby woods. (Spoilers incoming)

The boy could only come to school during certain weather, kind of like in Twilight.

There was a cave with a pit or something inside it that would trap people in this woods, and the boy's life is now tied to that hole so he can never go too far from it. We eventually find out that when he was little he and his father came across it and his father fell inside. The boy offered himself in exchange for his father's life, and his father ended up abandoning him to the cave.

The main girl tells the boy she will offer her life for his so he can be free instead, but he tells her no, insisting that he would leave her there just like his father left him years ago.

The main girl has a sister who likes reading Little House on the Prairie and feels really bad about (view spoiler)[Mary going blind (hide spoiler)] in the books. Or maybe the main character reads them, but I'm pretty sure it was her sister.

In the end the boy decides to get some explosives to try to destroy the cave once and for all, but I don't remember if we see what happens after that.
