Megan Pluym | 101 comments The book was a YA fantasy. I do not remember the cover and all I can remember was that I read it in the last 10 (pretty sure) years.

I started reading a book, only to realize it was a sequel in a series so I returned it. I want to read the first book but I can't remember what series it is. It may even be on my to read list but I'm not sure how to track it down since I don't remember the cover.

Here is what I remember:

The story started with the group main character and a group hiding out. It sounded like there were opposing groups (there may be more than 2) within the story that were either at war or just from opposing nations/groups. The group consisted of people from both sides that had united for some reason and were on the run. One of the characters (male) was injured and another member (male I think) in the group seemed to have a crush on him even though they were supposed to be enemies. The main girl seemed to have some powerful entity inside of her. I want to say some phoenix queen or something but that could be wrong. I keep remember something related to fire but I may be mixing books. I do remember the girl could hear a voice in her head when the entity was communicating with her. A different boy that was supposed to be her enemy was in the group too that had a high standing within his nation. (He was obviously the love interest and may have been a royal.) The love interest managed to get some coffee so the group was excited. I remember the main girl watching him drink it and wondering to herself how anyone could make drinking coffee look pornographic.

I realized it was not the first in the series shortly after this and returned it. I meant to get the first one but it was unavailable at the time. Any help is very appreciated.

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5548 comments Pretty sure this is The Girl At Midnight series by Melissa Grey. The first book is The Girl at Midnight and the second book is The Shadow Hour. The main character is a teenage girl called Echo who has a (phoenix-like) mythical entity called the firebird inside her.

I checked the Google Books preview for the second book and think I've found the coffee scene you remember:
"Good morning," he said, voice rough from sleep, slightly deeper than normal. He took a sip, Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed, the angle of his head highlighing the elegant line of his throat.
Echo rubbed at her sugar-coated lips with the back of her hand. "Morning." He knew what he was doing. He had to know. No one got to be two hundred fifty years old without learning how to make drinking coffee look pornographic.

Really hope you enjoy the first book if you do go back to read it!
