SOLVED. Children's / YA chapter book fiction series about two friends, one who is a little more wild, the other with a family and there's a chapter where they go sledding. [s]

I read the book sometime in the mid-nineties. I believe there were three books in the series that were stocked in my elementary school library. The friend's name was Red or something like that (or the sled was red - I really remember "Red" for some reason. I also remember skating, so I wonder if a section of one of the books took place in the winter, to include the sledding moment I remember, mentioned in the topic.

I feel like the books were published in the 60s/70s, but I don't remember when they took place. Considering I was 7/8/9 when I read these, it's entirely possible that some of my wires are crossed. I do remember when I read "A Separate Peace" in high school, it felt like an unofficial continuation of the stories I had read back then. I've been trying to remember and recall these books ever since I moved away from that school.
