Interesting method, Debbie! I will try that. ;-)

I think I will try it tonight. Now that I have a waterproof ereader, I am spending more time reading in the tub!

Gary Sundell | 2274 comments I pretty much can read anywhere anytime. Lately at home it is sitting or stretched out on my futon with one cat on each side of me as my stereo plays classical or film music in the background. A cozy mystery with Bernard Herrmann's score to The Trouble With Harry playing seems perfect

message 55: by Julie Austin (new)

Julie Austin Edwards | 109 comments When I was younger, I could only read one book at a time, in one place (shag carpeting on my bedroom floor). Now in my late 40s, I can read more than one book at a time, almost anyplace. I get more enjoyment out of reading in the late afternoon. I can't handle audio books because they make me drowsy. Also, I can't read while standing on my head. For those of you who can't read in a moving car, neither can I (especially if I'm driving); but if I'm stopped in line at the drive-thru I have no problem pulling out a book!

message 56: by Paula (new)

Paula Adams (goodreadscompadams57) | 44987 comments I usually read laying down on the bed with my 2 cats for company. 9 out of 10 times I end up taking an unexpected nap. In the summer I like to lay on my hammock while the hubster is puttering around in the garage and again 2 cats keep me company.

I was prevented from reading on the bus home the other night due to a lack of light/choice of seating. If you're going to sleep on the bus, do the readers a favor and sit on the side that doesn't have running lights, not directly under them. Much of my reading time this past month has been on the bus to and from work. :-\

message 58: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 440 comments I can read pretty much anywhere, but depending on the book, I might have a preferred spot.

For instance, I can read on my break at school, or when I am covering for coworkers during lunch. I need a book that is OK to be interrupted. Poetry, short story, even some cozies work for this.

Deep thinking novels, I need quiet.

I like to do self-help books on the treadmill or bike. I generally will say I will stay on for so many chapters. Those books work better for me broken up into bits.

I keep a book on my phone for when standing in line longer than expected, or waiting in restaurants for my companion to show up. Generally a light book, or short story collection.

And, I can read on the bus/car/train/plane etc. I actually got really good at it when in college. My subway trip to and from college was almost 90 minutes one way some days. That is a LOT of time to do homework. I could do simple note taking, too...but, it was harder to do what with motion of the train.

message 59: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I used to have to commute 45-60 minutes each way to work. I either slept or read. Audiobooks are great for this since you don't have to listen to the people around you.

message 60: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) I usually read on the couch or in bed.

I discovered audiobooks and they are my book of choice for my commute for this very reason. The problem is, if I'm tired and fall asleep, I have to figure out where to rewind to! I also loved audiobooks when I was getting chemo because I didn't have to hold the book.

Donald Scott (writeondon) In bed, though that often makes me sleepy - no matter HOW great the book is. Is it trashy to also be totally honest, and say that most of the time the only way I can get true privacy and quiet to read is in the bathroom?

I know this sounds sexist, but I think it's a man thing to read in the bathroom. :-P I like reading in bed as well. I love reading in the bath tub, bed, at work at my desk or up in our building's library, my LazyBoy chair, car (audio), waiting at the doctor's office, etc., etc. Whenever I can read, I will grab those few minutes. I also tend to fall asleep easily while reading. It's because I am not MOVING so it's a natural tendency to fall asleep, no matter how intriguing the mystery is.

I read in moments, as well - and VERY glad to find there is someone else for whom reading in bed, all comfy, causes sleepiness! I totally agree with your reasoning. Regarding the bathroom, I am just easily distracted by noise, and have a noisy roommate with a loud TV, whereas I don't share a bathroom and there's a fan in it that blocks out noise ... so even fully dressed and ONLY reading, it's a bit of a sanctuary at times, where I can concentrate on a good book!

message 66: by Paula (new)

Paula Adams (goodreadscompadams57) | 44987 comments I like to read in bed too. If I lay in bed in the afternoons I almost always fall asleep. At night I can read for hours before nodding off. I always take a book with me to doctors appts. as they usually run late. When watching TV I read during the commercials.

Gary Sundell | 2274 comments My latest reading challenge is one of my 2 cats constantly rubbing against my Nook. I know she is trying to knock it out of my hand. I can be petting her with one hand and she is still trying to distract me from reading by rubbing the Nook with her face. She doesn't like my laptop either.

I have the same problem. Belle wants me to pay her all my attention, not to my Kindle. Eventually she falls asleep and then I can read.

message 69: by Gary (new)

Gary Sundell | 2274 comments Dot, named after a certain Warner Sister from Animaniacs, has always been a hyper kitty, thus the name. Getting her to settle down is a major challenge, My profile picture is her hiding behind her slightly older brother when the were kittens nearly 15 years ago. Louis, named after one of Donald Duck's nephews, is fairly laid back.

message 70: by Paula (new)

Paula Adams (goodreadscompadams57) | 44987 comments Barnabas is 4 years old and he is very laid back. He sleeps down near my feet. Belle is 10 years old and she is crazy. She shares a pillow with me. She wants me to pet her constantly and I want to read.

message 71: by Lacey (new)

Lacey (she2beautiful) | 13659 comments I usually read on my couch (it's super comfy, the kind that sucks you in), if I'm not on my couch I'm reading in bed. I try not to read in bed too much anymore because I feel like it's not very courteous to my partner (even though he usually falls asleep regardless).

message 72: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (debbiegray) | 316 comments I have a cat problem too. I normally read books and Miss Piddy Pat thinks that I can read through her. She has also flipped pages on my tablet when I'm reading on it.

message 73: by Gary (new)

Gary Sundell | 2274 comments Dot has done that to me as well. She also is also fond of walking across the laptop keyboard. She popped off the top of one of the keys, twice. I replaced the keyboard the first time, but I can still use the topless key so haven't bothered after her dew claw struck again. It was the "& 7 key"

Debbie (debbiegray) | 316 comments I wouldn't give my cat up for the world, but she pushes the limit. The two doxies will just lay down and snuggle in for the read.

I am VERY allergic to cats, too, Rebecca. To the point where it kicks up my asthma. I will stick with my 2 dogs. LOL

message 77: by Carla (new)

Carla (carla1957) I read just about anywhere but in bed or in a moving car. I would fall asleep. I read outside by the pool, on the balcony, on the couch, riding the exercise bike etc.

Teresa LaRue | 37 comments Where do I read? Everywhere. At the kitchen table, in the tub, lounging in bed, at the doctor's office. I find you can get through a lot of books by using those small patches of time you'd otherwise waste.

I agree, I read wherever and whenever I have a couple of minutes. Last year I was able to read 114 books by grabbing pages whenever I could. People tell me they don't have time to read and I just smile and read on.

message 80: by Phair (last edited Feb 16, 2016 08:46AM) (new)

Phair (sphair) I read anyplace but one of my favorite spots is to go out in the driveway and sit in my car. Steering wheel makes a great book rest and there is a convenient cup-holder to boot. If I get tired I can recline the seat and have a snooze or listen to the radio or CD. When it's rainy it is especially restful in there. I call it going out to my 'summer house' but even in winter the sun can warm up the inside of the car to tolerable levels for a brief getaway as long as it's not as cold as it was here last weekend!

Interesting place to read! I am afraid my neighbors will think I'm being strange for reading in the car. LOL I do read in the car, in the driver's seat, when I run errands during lunch time and have minutes to spare. I love that time!

message 82: by Bridget's Quiet Corner (last edited Mar 05, 2016 05:10PM) (new)

Bridget's Quiet Corner (chaptersandscreens) I'm usually in my bed but I can read almost any where as long as it's not overly noisy and/or I have headphones with jazz or nature sounds going but the nature sounds usually are my "on my way to sleep" mode. I cant really read in a car because people tend to want to talk. I dont like reading in public too much because, again, people want to talk and/or interrupting you like "oh she's just reading, nothing important"...ggrr lol...I've had to get testy with one guy because he kept wanting to talk/ask questions while I was listening to an audio..and my ignoring him didn't work, he'd tap me on my arm..and I dont like being touched by many...especially strangers...sigh...he tried again another time about 3-7days later...but I think he kind of got the point from last time...plus, I got up and left..lol. :-D (typing on my Kindle, so please forgive typos)

message 83: by Pam (new)

Pam (maddustkitties) Usually my sofa. One end opens like a recliner and I have the end table right there for my tea.
When it's warm out, I sit on my small balcony. I live in an apartment and it has a very small balcony; my personal slice of outside.

Not to sound silly, but doesn't that do the trickle noise though? I can't stand the noise if it's what I'm thinking of.

Right now I refill partway if it gets too cooled down.

What's really sad is I swear everyone I know has a luxury bathtub except me and I'm the only one who spends any time in the bath lol

That's terrible, Bridget. What a creep.

One of my main reading times of the day is on my lunch hour at work - I go to the nearby McDonald's, get a drink, and sit on the patio before having to head back in. Usually this works fine but, like you said, so many people want to randomly start talking. OR they sit at a table near me and blare rap music from their phone. It's hard for me to concentrate.

My girl cat has always been a bit on the hyper side. She is named after Dot Warner from the Anamaniacs for a reason. She was doing it again last night as I was making my way through a battle scene between Ree Reyes and her mentor Eastwood and the second Hexomancer who was trying to kill them. In case you are wondering what book I'm referring to. Hexomancy (Ree Reyes, #3) by Michael R. Underwood

Yes it does make a trickling noise, but I don't even notice it. I have used this method for at least 45 years, so I guess you don't even notice it anymore, but then again I like the sound of running water.

Sounds like my brother's cat. If he wants to use the computer, he sits on the keyboard. If he looks like he's packing, the cat sits on the luggage.

It would drive me crazy. I had a dentist once who had one of those little fountains in his exam room. It would drive me crazy because it made me want to pee!!

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

I usually read on my sofa, but carry a book wherever I go so if I find myself sitting and waiting, I can just read. Cozies and some of the lighter UF are very good for that as they don't demand my undivided attention.

I learned to only reread favorites in bed. I lack the discipline to put down a book once it has my complete attention. I stand a chance when it's a reread and lighter than some of the stuff I like.
