Chris Brookes | 10 comments Yesterday I was reminded of the the time when I was in the army, and of a fellow solider who used to sneak books with him when we went on exercise. Specifically, I remember one fraught trip in a helicopter where it was banking heavily left then right and still the guy just kept on reading! Which all got me thinking, it would be good to hear where members do their reading. Can you literally read anywhere? Have you missed your bus or train stop because you were so engrossed in a story? Or do you need to be in a nice cosy place, with peace and quiet, lights down low and your cat purring on your lap?

How about we hear your stories!

message 2: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina The Book Lover | 388 comments I can't just read anywhere, if there is a lot of noise around me then I can't focus on the story (I'm somebody who is easily distracted). So yes, I need somewhere peaceful and quiet to read.

message 3: by Chris (last edited Jan 11, 2015 01:23PM) (new)

Chris Brookes | 10 comments Yes, I can identify with that, Sabrina. I'm much too easily distracted as well when reading, although not when I'm writing, then I can blank out anything around me - bizarre!

message 4: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie | 19 comments Anywhere. Anytime. I blank out the surrounding distractions with a good book. A not so good book, not so much and it tells me something.

message 5: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 217 comments I can read against distractions if the book is engaging. But I can't read on a moving vehicle--no buses or cars, certainly not wildly banking helicopters! I can read on an airplane as long as there's no hint of turbulence.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Anytime, anywhere. I haven't yet missed a train stop, but it's been awfully close a couple of times.

I do struggle to read in a car sometimes though. Either the roads or the driver - I don't know - sometimes I can get a little woozy.

message 7: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 5308 comments I like to read in bed especially if I get to lay down to take a nap. I also have a terrible habit of reading for a couple hours sitting in my favorite chair with one of my beloved quilts but doing that reading at 2:00a.m. until 4:00a.m. in the morning. I also always have a book in my purse for when I have to wait for appointments.

message 8: by Ivy (new)

Ivy | 45 comments I'm with the anywhere, anytime group. I also tend to read several books at a time, so they're scattered throughout the home.

My fave place is like tonight, warm fire, soft couch, pinot grigio and Dinah Washington on stereo. My furry pets are close by, but this is my time.

I'd find that really frustrating ... just at a really good bit then - damn, a call coming in!

message 10: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 24 comments I am also an anytime, anywhere reader. I always have a book with me so that I'm never without something to do. My favorite place is a big, soft chair, where I can curl up with a blanket and spend hours reading. I wish I could read in bed, but I fall asleep reading there!

Wow! I thought I was an 'into the early hours' type of person, but you've beaten me hands down here.

message 12: by Teresa (last edited Jan 12, 2015 08:04AM) (new)

Teresa | 88 comments I'm a read anywhere type of person. Most of it is at home, on the couch or in bed before I go to sleep. But I almost always have a book in my purse just in case I need one - waiting rooms, etc. I don't necessarily need it silent to read, but I don't usually have music or the TV on.

I grew up reading in the car on trips. We drive everywhere on vacations. My father would be talking about the beautiful scenery and I would have my nose in a book. I still enjoy reading in the car but I don't get much chance anymore.

message 13: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 217 comments Teresa--yeah, it's a bummer when you have to drive! Though I never could read in the car, my spouse and boys can. The kids follow in that grand tradition of reading instead of admiring the scenery.

message 14: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina The Book Lover | 388 comments I really envy those of you who can read just about anywhere!

message 15: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I can't read in a moving vehicle which is why I am so grateful for Audible! I also can't read when I am sick or have a headache.

Otherwise, I will read anywhere. I will take a book whenever I leave the house which is why I am grateful for my Kindle. I no longer have to carry a huge purse anymore!

Snap Ivy for the fire, couch, pinot grigio and furry friends!

message 17: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) I can read *almost* anywhere, but I prefer places that are quiet, or, if I'm reading something funny, someplace public crowded so people see me laughing and think books are funny. I've been known to read while waiting in line at the grocery store, Panera Bread while waiting for my food to be finished, on the couch Christmas night while everyone is downstairs, watching some stupid movie....

I'm among those who can read almost anytime, anywhere -- though I do find it difficult to concentrate if there is excessive noise. I have almost missed my bus stop reading. Luckily, I looked up just as we passed the stop before mine. The fact that I can read in a moving vehicle always earned me the role of navigator when friends and I went on road trips.

message 19: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I can read pretty much anytime, anywhere, too. Agree with Heather that if it's too noisy it's sometimes hard to concentrate. I don't have trouble reading in the car or whereever!

Chris Brookes | 10 comments Kirsten wrote: "I can't read in a moving vehicle which is why I am so grateful for Audible!

A moving car and audio - whoa! I'd be fast asleep within ten minutes I'm afraid, no matter how good the book or narrator.

I admit, I do sometimes have to fight falling asleep on long car rides. Reading seems to help.

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 27 comments I read most of the time at my computer table. I also like to read while waiting for the bus and, if the ride's going to be long enough, on the bus. (I've never missed my stop due to reading.) Occasionally I'll read in the library and while waiting to see the doctor.

This is me! I prefer to read on my living room sofa but that is mostly due to the convenience of the kitchen and bathroom...

message 26: by Julesy (last edited Jan 12, 2015 08:18PM) (new)

Julesy | 1411 comments I am also a person who can read anywhere, anytime, anyplace. I very rarely read dead tree books anymore since I love the portability of audio books and ebooks. I listen to audio books during my commute to/from work (2 hours/day) and there have been times I didn't want to go to work because of an intriguing part in the audio. I've also been listening to audio books during work if I don't have any meetings. When we travel, I always make my husband drive so I can read. I don't get car sick while reading but apparently it makes others car sick to see me reading while in a car. ;-) I also love how I can load up the books on my ereader, iPad, or my Android phone and always have a book available while waiting in line, eating lunch, etc.

I'm definitely one of those people that can't read in a moving car! It's odd though--most days I can read on my 50 minute train ride commute to work. Sometimes I need to put my book/Kindle down to rest my eyes because I can feel myself getting queasy, but usually I get most of my reading done that way :). I love to sit in my chair in my living room and read (and I can definitely read with the TV on!).

message 28: by Marja (new)

Marja McGraw (marja1) | 994 comments I can read almost anywhere. The problem is finding time to read. Life changes sometimes and takes my attention away from my favorite pastime, reading. Maybe things will go back to the way they were. One can always hope. :)

message 29: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1436 comments I agree with many of you, moving car and reading do not go together for me but I can read just about any place else. Standing in line at the DMV, waiting in the Doctor's waiting room, in the dentist's chair, oh yeah, at home in a chair or bed, while I'm waiting for the kettle to boil, for my computer to boot up, during TV commercials or when I'm left on hold on the phone. I let my Kindle read to me while I'm cleaning or cooking.

message 30: by AlegnaB † (last edited Jan 14, 2015 06:13AM) (new)

AlegnaB † (alegnab) I have a 27-year-old La-Z-Boy swivel-rocker recliner, which is so comfortable. I've spent countless hours in it, reading, watching TV, and nursing my four babies. My child who loves to read the most also loves to read in that chair.

I used to be able to read almost anywhere, because I could block out sounds. I would spend a lot of time reading in the family room while my family was watching TV. Now, however, I have a hard time blocking out sounds, so I have to go in another room and wear earplugs, but that's often not sufficient, so I have to go upstairs into my bedroom and shut the door. I then still have to wear earplugs. I keep earplugs in my purse so that I can put them in and read when I'm away from home and have to wait somewhere. During my recent trips to Walt Disney World, I spent a lot of time standing in line with earplugs in and reading on my kindle. I had to wear earplugs there a lot, because I have very good hearing and so many of the attractions hurt my ears because they're too loud.

I usually read in the car, but I do have to stop reading if the road is curvy. I can read in an airplane, too.

Yes been there, Ivy. Got a row of soggy paperbacks now to prove it!

message 33: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (debbiegray) | 316 comments I'm also a tub reader, but I read anywhere, anytime. I always have a book with me, although I read one book at a time. When I was in my 20's I read several at once, but now I enjoy a single book. I read in bed and my Lazy-Boy with my cat as a book rest, while my hubby is in his Lazy-Boy with one of our three doxies as his book rest.

In the summer, it's the front porch swing. Come on summer......

message 34: by Tonya (new)

Tonya De Lige | 177 comments Any where, any time, under any circumstance. I just saw a news story about using an e-reader right before bed, and how it interrupts your sleep cycle. I have gone back to a real book when in bed, and I have noticed I am sleeping more soundly.

message 35: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 217 comments Tonya, I'm pretty sure that's not a problem if your ereader uses eInk (at least, I haven't noticed any, and the reasons given why screens cause trouble don't apply to them). But if you were reading on a tablet or anything with a lighted screen, yeah, not so good.

message 36: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 678 comments I'm like many of you, I can read just about anywhere, anytime, anyplace. I always bring a book of some sort when I have an appointment of any kind, even for job interviews. I used to be able to read during car trips as well, until one time, I just couldn't any more. I discovered I get car sick on twisty, winding roads, if I'm not looking out the window. :( So, I can only read during straight sections of road trips. I'm also fairly good with ignoring distractions, unless the book isn't very good. If I really get into a good book, bombs and earthquakes could happen around me and it would take some time for me to notice. ;) Normally, I read on my couch, with the T.V. going in the background with my little buddy (my lap dog) on my lap or laying next to me. I also read in bed because it helps my mind stop focusing on the past day.

message 37: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Decker | 195 comments I can read just about anywhere except in a car. I have no problem with buses, trains, or planes, but for some reason I have never been able to read in a moving car. I do most of my reading while watching tv, during commercial breaks.

I've started listening to audiobooks in the dentist's chairs and it seems to help my stress levels.

message 39: by Merrill (new)

Merrill | 34 comments I read in bed, it help me go to sleep. I like read in the corner of a comfy couch and when I waiting for the bus to pick me up after swimming.

message 40: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (tiffanigold) | 3 comments I read curled in a corner of the coach in the living room or in my recliner in our sitting room. I also read in the doctors or dentists office and if I am running errands alone and stop for a meal.

message 41: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Varadan | 21 comments Gosh, I read everywhere: In bed, in the livingroom, on the patio in good weather, in the waiting room for dental or doctor appointments, in line at the post office. I just pack a book with me everywhere I go.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) No, unless the book is drop dead fascinating, I can't read with too much discomfort or distraction. I'm like that with most stuff. I can't read in a car because I get motion sick when I try - very annoying.

Otherwise I can read most places. I like being comfortable though, it helps me get into the book and not be as distracted.

My main current reading spots -

My couch with the faux fireplace and rainymood, blanket and drinks/sweets at side with cat on me

My bed with pillows arranged and keep needing to rearrange, with blanket, cold air conditioning going, drink, and cat trying to lay on my face for some
reason (if I lay flat he is more difficult!)

Bathtub - I go all out - have my favorite bubble bath that lasts a long time with little needed, an inflatable bath pillow, a drink nearby and peacefully no cat in there to bother me. I can get lost for hours in the bath with a book.

Small porch - My favorite when its windy and raining and the sun isn't out too much (otherwise too blinding)

McDonalds - I read at the local McDonalds on my lunch break. They have a nice patio outside, it's close to work, I can get a cheap drink and free refill before going back. Sometimes the chairs are too uncomfortable and my back starts hurting though

A bean bag chair - When my son plays video games sometimes I plop down next to him on this large and ridiculously cozy bean bag chair. I lay down my head and upper body, it's more comfortable than it sounds.

message 43: by Antje (new)

Antje (_antje_) | 16 comments I can read almost everywhere. I'm used to read when on a train or bus or in waiting rooms, but I do prefer reading in bed or while taking a hot bath in winter. In summer I usually get cozy on my balcony.

message 44: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (debbiegray) | 316 comments I love to read in the tub, an always have even as a teenager. but most of my friends think I'm crazy. I'm glad to see someone else that is a tub reader.

Julesy | 1411 comments I love reading in the tub with my bubble bath! I just wish I could find a way to keep the water hot enough without having to drain and refill over and over.

message 49: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 217 comments I can't read in moving vehicles. And it's been a long time since I read in the tub, but it's a grand place for it!

message 50: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (debbiegray) | 316 comments My secret to hot water is to keep the hot at just a bit more than a trickle the whole time. I start with a couple of inches of water and then enjoy my bath while the hot water fills the tub. That way I don't use more than a tub full of water and I'm good for about 45 minutes to an hour of reading.
