Megan | 1 comments Hello! I read this book sometime in the early or mid 1990s. It is a YA book about teens who become trapped under a building after an earthquake. I do believe it takes place in SF but I am not 100% positive. Thanks!!

Was it set in modern times? If so, it was probably the 1989 earthquake.

Kat (tadpoledrain) | 542 comments Was it First to Die (Mollie Fox Mystery Book 1), by Peter Nelson? It's the first in a series of I think 6 books. The students who are trapped all work in the basement/lower level of a mall (?) selling insurance (?) over the phone. When the earthquake happens they are trapped, and they realize that the guy they were working for was actually corrupt and a criminal, and isn't going to tell anyone that they were in the office when the earthquake hit, so no one knows where they are.

Other random details in case anything sounds familiar:
There's a Black character named Roberta, a Latino character named Jaime, who I think is also diabetic (and they become a couple at some point in the series), a beautiful sort of poor little rich girl (who is actually very nice) named I want to say Meredith, and a "criminal element" type named Johnny who of course Mollie ends up with. I don't think I'm remembering everyone.
Mollie ends up finding (and keeping) a dog that escaped from a pet store in the mall.
Mollie's dad is a police detective. I think she has two younger siblings. Her dad of course HATES Johnny.
Either at the end of this book or in one of the other books in the series, they use the abandoned office to set up a sort of underground teen chat/helpline.
At the end of the book [SPOILER] they find out that one of the girls they were trapped with (who always seemed like she was hiding something, or was really anxious, and never really got close to the rest of the group; and I think she was Asian?) got killed, I think in a hit-and-run "accident" -- figuring out what happened to her and why is one of the things that drives the rest of the series.
