Gord | 1000 comments I've set my Goodreads goal at 100 books and I've completed that already. My less official goal is 400 books and 110,000 pages for this year. So far it's not going to bad as I've finished 216 books and my page count as of the end of June was 51,098. I'll be honest I'm not sure if I can hit that or not but I'll see how close I can get.

I'm not going to list all my other challenges in here as I've got some 70 plus challenges on the go currently and I use a spread sheet to track all of them. Some of these challenges are monthly, some are six month challenges, some are yearly, and some are just open ended. I've got one that requires some 3,000 plus books to finish. I'm slowly chipping away at the one.

What I will probably do over the coming days is update this thread with my monthly reading totals for books and pages.

Gord | 1000 comments Alright that didn't take as long as expected. I'm now all caught up until I have to post this months stuff.

Mackenzie :) (book_girl_777) | 253 comments I am super jealous of how many mangas you've read this year!‍

message 10: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments I've found some great ones and some I wasn't as impressed with. Series like Emma and Saotome Girl just pulled me in and I couldn't stop reading until I was done.

message 11: by Mackenzie :) (new)

Mackenzie :) (book_girl_777) | 253 comments I just looked at them and they sound good. have you read fruits basket?

message 12: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments I've read the first omnibus edition and have been wanting to read more. I have been watching the 2019/2020 anime of it though and I've been loving it.

message 13: by Mackenzie :) (new)

Mackenzie :) (book_girl_777) | 253 comments I'm on book 6 now. I have it at my library and love it! I've been wanting to watch the series.

message 14: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments For the longest time I was in that mindset that comics/manga shouldn't count towards my yearly counts. As a result I was focusing more on things that would count towards what I read and wasn't reading as much manga. I did some reflecting and what not and last year I decided to start counting them. There are so many series both new and old that I've been wanting to read and I've slowly been working through them. Fruits Basket is one of the big ones on that list of things to read. I have to finish up Oh My Goddess! as well. Part of me wants to tackle Detective Conan but that is a monster long series. Now that the libraries are opening up I'm going to start Battle Angel Alita at some point this year. There are just so many manga series to read.

message 15: by Mackenzie :) (new)

Mackenzie :) (book_girl_777) | 253 comments I totally agree! I enjoy having pictures while I read and not having it be a children's books. I've been wanting to read battle angel alita ever since I've watched the movie. what are some of your favorite mangas or comics?

message 16: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments Oh boy that is an interesting question. The immediate answer is Berserk. Berserk holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the first manga that really pulled me in. I was living in Japan at the time and couldn't read Japanese but the artwork pulled me in. It became my bar for dark fantasy and manga artwork. Since that time I've reread Berserk numerous times and I still love the story. Outside of that here is just a list of random manga/comic.

Uzumaki (Junji Ito in general honestly)
Vagabond
I Hate Fairyland
The Breaker
My Love Story
Full Metal Alchemist
xxxHolic (I love the artwork in this one)
Black Lagoon
Lumberjanes
Laid Back Camp
Oh My Goddess
Barakamon
Emma
Courtney Crumrin
Princess Ugg
Interview With Monster Girls
School-Live
Flying Witch
Hack/Slash

I'm sure there is more but those would be my big stand out ones.

message 17: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
The artwork in xxxHolic is so neat! I only read a couple of them though I should go back and read the whole thing.

I'm with you Gord, I used to not count manga/grapic novels in my counts either but then I had basically stopped reading it all together so that didn't work for me either.

Love Fruits Basket so much! I read it when it first came out and don't know that I ever quite finished it either. Loving the anime reboot.

Battle Angel Alita is one I keep contemplating starting as well.

I watched the anime for Interview With Monster Girls. I'm currently working my way through Flying Witch.

I think you will make your goals this year with how fast you've been reading. But either way, enjoy the ride :)
Also if you find any really cool challenges share! I love adding more even if I really don't need any.

message 18: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments Most of my challenges fall into the same groupings.

-Scavenger hunts: I've done both super big but easier lists and smaller but harder lists.

-Bingo's: I'm working through a few of these

-Task based: This is either get a set of task where you have to complete one before you get the next one. Or you get all the tasks for that challenge and you work through as you please.

-Spelling: Spell a word or words using titles or author initials. Basic but I like the passive nature of these kind of challenges.

-A to Z: Another passive challenge that can be broad when it comes down to setting up the challenge. You can make this challenge super easy or super hard.

message 29: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments Not a bad vacation. Ten days, twenty books, 6,151 pages read. Unfortunately I probably wont get anymore time like this until November depending on the work situation.

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
Nicely done! I'd love that kind of time off. All those precious books! Life and work need to stop being so insane for awhile.

message 31: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments Well my library decided that I need all the books at once.

Currently from the library I have:
For a Few Demons More (The Hollows, #5) by Kim Harrison Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels, #4) by Ilona Andrews Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate

My library is currently shipping me:
Didn't I Say To Make My Abilities Average In The Next Life?! Light Novel Vol. 3 by FUNA Didn't I Say To Make My Abilities Average In The Next Life?! Light Novel Vol. 4 by FUNA Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 1 Volume 1 (light novel) by Miya Kazuki Durarara!!, Vol. 1 by Ryohgo Narita So I'm a Spider, So What?, Vol. 1 (light novel) by Okina Baba Dark Arts and a Daiquiri (The Guild Codex Spellbound, #2) by Annette Marie Two Witches and a Whiskey (The Guild Codex Spellbound, #3) by Annette Marie

I still need to read this month:
The Veil (Devil's Isle, #1) by Chloe Neill Winds of Fate (Mage Winds #1) by Mercedes Lackey

Then I have a couple of of buddy reads I want to get to that are 800 pagers.

So many books, not enough time.

message 32: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
That is a lot of books! You'll get there I'm sure!

I have 16 graphic novels/manga from the library currently and a whole bunch of other things I want to read though so I totally get it. Nevermind how many keep coming in digitally. There are not enough hours in the day.

message 33: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments So true! I also have so many manga to read and not enough time for everything I want to complete :D

message 34: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments I hear you both on the manga front. I have so many that I want to read. There is just not enough time in the day for all of it and that annoying thing called "work" doesn't help.

message 35: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
That annoying thing called work keeps taking up way too much time. I think I need to decline overtime for awhile. This ended up being one too many night shifts in a run. I am very done.
There will never be enough time though. So many amazing shiny things keep coming out!

message 36: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments I've been on the fence about this for a couple of days now. Now that I've got about 30% of the book left I think I can speak on Fallen. I didn't think it was possible but I think I'm at the point where I like Hush, Hush more than this book. This book is just a nothing burger. There was no plot, there is no world building, there is no character development, there is just nothing but angst and melodrama. I understand that there are people who enjoy this kind of stuff and power to you if you do but yah it's not my jam. I feel like this has been 450 pages of the MC going "guy 1 is so hot" to then saying "guy 2 is so hot" in the next breathe. Obviously there was more difference than that but if you boil it down that is what we have. I could talk about how the MC feels like she is denser than a brick and at the same time flakier than a box of corn flakes. The love interests make no sense. Guy one flips her the bird at their first meeting and will ghost her mid "date". Guy two just feels greasier than a jar of rancid lard. How is she not questioning how smooth this guy is? This guy just screams player. I really can't wait to finish this book so I can move on to something else.

message 37: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
I can't believe you are even finishing it

message 38: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments I feel that there was a gauntlet thrown down at some point in time and I simply cannot walk away from this book. I have to finish it or the book would have gotten the better of me. I know it sounds silly and I don't have this problem with all bad books.

message 39: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
hahaha, I get that.

message 40: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1000 comments Time for another large influx of books from the library. This one was entirely my doing though.

I either have or am picking up the following:

Amazing! I was reading what you said about middle grade books and I totally agree. Last year I read The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart and absolutely loved it! Another of my favorites that is considered middle grade is Skellig. Read that book a long time ago and re-read it again recently. It holds a special place in my heart. :)
