Summer '20 Read-A-Thon Team Challenge:
There Are No Wrong Answers, Only Silly Questions

This read-a-thon’s team challenge is all about getting to know each other better through some silly questions and creative book choices. Your goal as a team is to accumulate as many points as possible because everyone loves points.

Read a book as an answer to each question. 1 book completed = 1 point earned.

Your book could be the answer to the question by the title, by using something on the cover, based on the plot or themes of the book, based on the author’s name, etc. We encourage you to be creative! Tell your team your answer and how your book fits. We can all read more and get to know each other a bit better. If your team ‘answers’ every question on the list, you can start on a second round where each book is worth 2 points.

You have the ability to earn 4 Wild Cards throughout the game for pages read as a group. You earn a wildcard at 2000 pages total, 5000 pages total, 10000 pages total, and 15000 pages total! Make sure you are recording your pages read on your group spreadsheet.

THE RULES

1. Books need to be 100+ pages to count, or have at least 100 pages left for books already in progress at the start of the read-a-thon.
2. Each question can only be answered once until the whole set is completed at which point you can start in on round 2.
3. Be sure to tell your group how your book fits. We want to know what vegetable you would be and it’s not always obvious that a book is about the owner of a pickle boutique.
4. Have fun and play nice! This challenge is about reading more, working together, and having a good time. Lets keep the easy-going, helpful, considerate vibe our group is well known for along with the spirit of competition. :)

THE SILLY QUESTIONS

1. Which body part would you choose to get a tattoo on?
2. Which bad habits of other people drive you crazy?
3. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
4. What would you do in life if you knew you could not fail?
5. What was your favorite Halloween costume?
6. What thing do you consider yourself to be very good at?
7. What thing do you consider yourself to be very bad at?
8. What is your favorite TV show?
9. What do you do every day that you wish was automated?
10. What smells make you happy?
11. What outdoor activities do you like to do?
12. What is a goal that you have been able to reach?
13. What is your favorite sport or physical activity?
14. What is your favorite season of the year?
15. What is your favorite holiday?
16. What is your favorite hobby?
17. What is the social event you hate the most?
18. If you could get rid of one month of the year, which would you choose?
19. What is something you hate but you wished you loved?
20. What is something you think is beautiful?
21. What is one thing you do to get motivated?
22. What’s your pet peeve?
23. What is a hidden talent you have?
24. What did you dream about last night?
25. What crazy activities do you dream of trying someday?
26. If you woke up tomorrow as an animal, what animal would you choose to be?
27. What is something you would want with you on a desert island?
28. If you were in a band, what kind of music would you play?
29. What vegetable would you be?
30. What is a popular trend that you can’t stand?
31. If you could be a time travel tourist, where/when would you go?
32. What is a place you would love to move to?
33. What job would you hate?
34. What’s your favorite part of a county fair?
35. If you had a boat, what would you name it?
36. How do you like to spend a rainy day?
37. Have an endless supply of any food, what would you get?
38. A genie shows up, what do you wish for?
39. Do you have any phobias?
40. What color looks best on you?
41. What is the best present you've ever been given?
42. Choose your age forever, what age would you choose and why?
43. Be an Olympic athlete, what sport would you compete in?
44. What’s your favorite time of day?
45. How much does a polar bear weigh?

Examples:

10. What smells make you happy?
I love the smell of the ocean and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is set in the ocean

40. What color looks best on you?
I look great in green (according to moi) and Bangkok Wakes to Rain has a green cover

45. How much does a polar bear weigh?
Enough to break the ice, haha I’m hilarious, please just accept this terrible joke for what it is, so I anyway could choose Icebreaker: A Voyage Far North based on the title.

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments Hello Team Icepops! Look forward to reading and answering silly questions with you all!

I happen to have quite a few books on the go (I quite often do) that I was hoping to wrap up this weekend so hopefully can find a place to slot them in.

Priority one is Rebel because the digital loan goes away Saturday afternoon. This one could fit in many places. (20. Butterflies are beautiful – butterfly on the cover - 31. Takes place in the future and I wouldn’t mind getting a peak at the future - 40. Blue cover and people have said blue is my color).

Rebel (Legend, #4) by Marie Lu

So we have 11 people on the team and 45 questions. I have made a list of the books I am reading and hope to read during the Readathon. I looked at the questions and most of my books could fit on multiple questions. If you know for sure a book you want to read, you could add it any time.

Question - I'm not clear if we can start filling in the spreadsheet already today for planning purposes or if we have to wait till tomorrow?

message 6: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I would think that as long as we aren't marking things done yet, it would be okay for planning?

If something works on multiple questions, should we list it on any that it works for and then we can narrow it down once we figure out which questions have the least possibilities?

message 7: by SarahKat (last edited Jul 17, 2020 01:53PM) (new)

SarahKat I have at least 4 books with 100 pages or more left in them that I can for sure finish in this time. Each of them has lots of options which I've posted below. Are we supposed to put tentative plans on the spreadsheet or do we wait until we know exactly what prompt to fill?

Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel
9 (sleep), 13: (favorite physical activity: sleep), 16: sleeping hobby, 32: Denver (set in, partially), 35: title is a good name for a boat, 36: sleeping, 44: Sleep time

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
10: Woods, 27: Bible, 29: Manioc (one of the only things they can grow in this book), 31: 1960 (set in), 33: Missionary (profession of family), 39: snakes, big bugs (lots of these in Africa and this book)

Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell
8: Lost (simile of "gone"), 28: Jewell, like that pop artist, 30: Ghosting (gone, missing), 39: My children going missing (is that a phobia?)

The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander
10: Books, 12: Read more books, 16: fav hobby, 18: March (3rd month), 26: Pig (in the book they are looking for a pig), 36: with books, 38: Books, 42: 3 because you're probably potty trained but everyone still does everything for you, 45: 3... hundred pounds

Jillian | 2873 comments Hi, icepops!

I have 110 pages left of this book, The Glass Bead Game.

I have just started the audio book of The Library Book bySusan Orlean.

I'm also planning on listening to Peace Talks by Jim Butcher.

I think this challenge will be tough for me since I tend to be very literal in reading prompts.

I agree people can start marking books down as soon as they have ideas. Seems reasonable to me to list books on all options and use for the least populated options. Just be sure to remove from other options once a question is chosen.

Excited to start reading with you all tomorrow! I'll try to start figuring out question options this evening for the 2 I'm currently reading.

You're good at unique interpretations! You might need to help some of us!!!

My favorite: 42: 3 because you're probably potty trained but everyone still does everything for you

message 11: by Deborah (last edited Jul 17, 2020 03:17PM) (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I think I found the right setting to freeze the names at the top of the columns as Edie wisely suggested to make it easier to make sure to fill things in under the right places. I'm not as good in Goggle docs as in Excel, but I think it worked? Hope that was okay to do! :)

Too much of a stretch to say "nothing" for which body part you'd want to get tattooed? I have The Nothing Man to get to on my list this week. Or a polar bear weighs nothing because who's going to convince a wild polar bear to get on a scale?

There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor's Baby: Scary Fairy Tales is another one that would be fun to get creative with and I'm hoping to read it this week (it's short). Killing neighbors would be a bad habit! Hired killer would be a career I'd dislike. A polar bear weighs enough to kill you.

As a kid I wanted to be a writer, so most anything could be put in that category as a stretch I'd think.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
The top row is frozen, so thanks for that Deborah!

Yes, you can start planning now. You can put possible books in light blue, and change the color to black when they are complete. Just plan within your column, and feel free to put the books down for as many questions as it answers while you're in the planning phase! You can see the example in the first column.

Deborah, I love those interpretations. I actually laughed out loud when I read the polar bear one lol

message 13: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1265 comments Let's see what I can come up with, currently reading

The Vanishing Half (not very far, will probably be able to figure out more): 2) people going MIA (vanishing) sometimes drives me crazy (could be 22) pet peeve as well)

The Sparrow: 7) I'm not very good at flying spaceships (that I know of), 11) outdoors I like to explore and they explore a new planet, 20) singing is beautiful, 26) there are some space animals, could be fun, 27) they have stuff to survive a space mission and life on another planet, seems like that would work for a desert island

Edie, I loved Red, White & Royal Blue on audio, not only the romance but the fantasy of the US with a woman president! And all the subplots fit together well.

There sure are a lot of jobs I would hate!

I have put 4 books on the spreadsheet.

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments Morning, Icepops!
Not sure how much reading I'm going to be able to do today-
The beef we ordered is ready today. I'm getting 1/6 of a cow, so not sure how much time it will take to deal with it.
Also, I am having a FB Pampered Chef party, so I need to spend some time interacting on Facebook.
But hopefully I get some good reading in today! Ooh, if I'm browsing ground beef alone I could do an audiobook.

Currently reading A Farewell to Arms, which would work for
1- I'd probably get a tattoo on my arm
6- I'm good at my job in healthcare, and the protagonist is an ambulance driver.
20- mountains are beautiful and it talks about the mountainous terrain related to the war.
37- endless supply of pizza, which is from Italy.

I like that book/habbit link! 😄

I have a buddy read chat starting in a bit, but started on Girl, Serpent, Thorn last night (because I didn't already have enough in progress books) and think that will be the first I finish off today. I thought this would be a good one for career you wanted when you were a kid because I had early ambitions of being a writer and this one has had a lot of focus on story telling so far (characters asking someone to tell a story, favorite stories to revisit, fairy tales, etc).

I don't have much going this weekend apart from a couple book chats, so plan to mostly be reading and a few of my in progress reads done!

Today I finished Sleeping Giants. I put it in "a thing you do every day and wish was automated" (sleep). Or rather, falling asleep. No more need of wine or melatonin, just flip a switch and sleep for 8 straight hours. Wouldn't that be lovely?

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments Okay I finished Invisible Girl by Lisa Jewell so I'm going to fill it in for hidden talent (making jewelry) since there wasn't anything else on that line though we could certainly move it to hobby or elsewhere.

As for how good it was - I'm not entirely sure. It was a very easy read and it kept me wanting to know what was going on but I'm not sure I loved it? I'm going to have to think on it before reviewing it! :)

Automating falling asleep would be such a lovely thing! My sleep schedule is all kinds of screwy lately!

I'm continuing on with Girl, Serpent, Thorn for what I wanted to be when I grew up and Rebel which would fit a few different things.
