What do we do if the record of the edition of a book with the original cover has never had its ASIN/ISBN attached, and then a later cover, that would normally be made into an ACE, gets the ASIN/ISBN? Do we then make the original cover edition into an ACE? Or do we move the identifiers to the original cover edition?

First edition to "grab" the ASIN/ISBN keeps it, any additional editions become ACE's.
Thank you for the info! Just one more question, if sales links for the edition with the old cover all lead to the Amazon page with the new cover, is that proof enough to determine the ASIN? Please note, in the case I am interested in, one of those short link systems is used, so that the ASIN is not visible in the link itself.
If you mean a shortlink has been put in the url field, you should just remove it. The url field is for additional book specific info, not sales links.
I'm not a fan of the shortlinks anyway because there is often no way to tell where it goes to. Spam anyone.
No, the short links are on the author's blog, but, since the current record for the old cover doesn't have an ASIN and Amazon has already switched to the new, I was wondering if I could use the fact that those links lead to the Amazon page with the new cover to definitively claim that the ASIN has not changed.

"Many authors (and their blogs) are a reliable source of spam.
amzn.com (an official Amazon address) is probably OK as is amzn.to. When I come across other shortlinks I ignore them since they can go anywhere.
