SOLVED. Childrens Chapter book about a wacky family that takes in a foster boy with a habit of getting kicked out of places. He looks like a delinquent. Family is large & at the end they put on the play the Sound of Music in their barn.

The family was not just a mom-dad-kids situation, there were several aunts and uncles as well. They were all artists and very new age hippy-like. There was a daughter (Eddie?) about 12 years old who spent the most time with the new kid (Jake?) and she was very organized and particular. She had a younger brother about 6 years old. One of the moms was a writer. At one point the kids raised caterpillars and fed them grape Koolaid and they used it to dye the little kids' hair. The older sister was a dancer and the older brother was a recluse. The dad was a director and when his play got canceled, the family came together to help him put it on in the barn. Jake played Rolf. There was a lot of stress casting the youngest Von Trapp. They had a pet goat. I read the book as a kid so anytime before 2010.

SOLVED! Of course after days of googling and finally giving in and posting I found it. Its called Surviving the Applewhites by Stephanie S. Tolan.
