I think Julien & Kitty will have a very unconventional life. I think they will definitely do things differently than the previous Lord & Lady Carfax. I think Kitty with the support of Julien will use her position to further the cause of Spain. I think both Malcolm and Julien are with the correct partner. I think Julien sees Kitty for who she is and isn't trying to change her. I think Malcolm saw the real Kitty, but thought they could come to a compromise. With Julien, Kitty can be who she wants without compromise. Julien has made it clear that he support her and her endeavors. I think he will worry about her, but I don't think he will stop her. Just as he has done, I think he will follow her and support her, but he will let her make the plans and decisions for the missions she wants to undertake.

It's a really good point that Julien sees Kitty for who she is. When you say Malcolm thought they could come to a compromise, what do you think he thought they'd be compromising over?

I agree with Kim in all of her comments. I actually like Kitty much better in this book, and I didn't think that would happen. It was hard for me to see her as an accepted member of the Rannoch spy/investigative group. However, as a team mate with Julien, she is more acceptable. Definitely will be interesting to see how they act as Lord and Lady Carfax.

I'm really glad you like Kitty better, Betty. Do you mean it was hard to see her as an accepted member of the investigative/spy team before this book or that ti is now?

Before this book. Previously, I couldn't see her fitting in with Harry, Cordy, Frances, Archie, Laura, as Malcolm's former lover. Now that she is with Julien, it seems more realistic that they can all work together. It lessens the effect of the earlier involvement and gives Kitty more value to the group in my mind.

That makes sense. I was thinking she was already working with the Rannochs at the start of the book, but then she and Julien are already a couple at that point. But I think her relationship with Malcolm was already clearly in the past, and Mélanie has fewer qualms about her as she gets to know her.

I think Malcolm would have done everything he could to make that work, but in the end I can see Kitty would have been miserable on the sideline.

That's true. And that was hard for Malcolm and Melanie later but would have been particularly hard for Kitty, especially in the midst of the war, especially at that point in her life. I think Melanie would have had a harder time with it in the midst of the war too. Malcolm as well, though I think he'd have handled it best of three of them. With Julien, Kitty is at a better point in her life to be "settled" and she doesn't have to give up her work. But I also think she's more temperamentally suited to him.

Kitty in particular keeps secrets and it is not clear whether she will continue to keep them from Julian. I fear all these relationships are vulnerable to the uncomfortable effects of keeping secrets from each other, but Malcolm seems best prepared for this.

An excellent point that all the characters keep secrets or may do so given the various intrigues they are involved in. Do you think Malcolm is more prepared for it than the other characters?
