The book was about a boy who gets the ability to talk to animals and fights for nature in a world that's mostly automated.
He is able to understand the animals due to a blue macaroni-shaped implant someone (possibly his absent father) sends him. He had an ankle implant that read his heart rate to send to his room, and I remember there was a detail where it displayed his heart rate on the wall with animal graphics, a hummingbird being one of them. There was mention of him having a desktop computer considered an antique. His ankle implant also tracked whether he was going outside when he wasn't allowed to so the animals helped him remove it. He went to a dog race for some reason and helped some racing dogs. The novel ended with him crying because he couldn't understand his white dog anymore.
The cover image on the paperback was of a pixelated image of a boy with black hair.
