Theresa | 15692 comments Welcome to July all! NYC entered Phase 3 yesterday, except for no inside dining. For all you living in states with escalating numbers, write your Governors and mayors urging them to follow NY's strict process because it has been working. Our numbers statewide are and continue to be low. Lower than they have been in months, getting lower daily. It can be done, requiring discipline. And wearing a mask.

It is beginning to feel totally normal to be wearing a mask. Having a conversation with clients or friends wearing one. It took no time at all to become comfortable.

Has everyone watched Hamilton?

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments We are in phase 4.5 (?) in Indiana. So originally we would've been at 100% in restaurants by now but the Governor backtracked because numbers are cropping up again. We are steady, I think, but because we are opening up to a degree people seem to think it is over.

I went out to a restaurant a couple times, but regret it. I think it was unnecessary so for now I am avoiding it again.

Otherwise, it is hotter than ballz out here! I get out a little, almost die from heat exhaustion, go back inside :P

I am one of the few who has yet to see Hamilton or listen to the music. I have seen it was streaming (?) and there were equal parts excitement and some backlash.

Amy | 12956 comments Here is Massachusetts, some people are still not even acting as if anything has opened up - some are swimming in the lake that has been told has active bacteria. Plenty are dining in and out and are maskless, but many are in between and are being careful. I think we are phase three. I am stressed about working and giving my kids a good and productive summer. Its hard actually. Today I was able to zoom with two patients from the backyard. Failed attempt with the dentist for my ten year old in between, and now having a social distanced birthday lunch for a friend with just three of us, (plus the new puppy). A good day I think.

message 4: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments In Washington we are paused at phase 2. I've read some statistics and aside from a crap ton of fraternity boys at UW and the east side of the state, our numbers are holding steady.

It's still not summer here, which I'm ok with. Our high today is in the 60s. It was sunny yesterday and it got into the low 70s, a gorgeous day.

I start my writing class tomorrow with Gotham Writers and I cannot wait! I'm beyond excited!!

I've watched Hamilton 3.5 times and I'm listening to the soundtrack on Spotify right now.

Husband has challenged me for another month, we are 3-3 both of us working on our 4th book.

I'm finally cheering up! June is a hard month for me, and even if I say I'm not going to let past events and anniversaries get me down. They still do.

message 5: by Rachel N. (new)

Rachel N. | 2251 comments I haven't watched Hamilton yet but am hoping to this weekend. This part of Michigan is still in phase 4 but our numbers are up some and the governor has said she'll shut things down again if need be. She specifically mentioned hair salons so I'm glad I got my hair cut today. I think restaurants are more of a problem than hair salons. There were 7 people in the salon, including me, all masked and distanced as much as you can be while cutting hair. The outbreaks I've heard of here are from bars and restaurants and one vet office, which I don't know what that office was doing as my vet will only allow staff and pets in the building. I'm still dealing with stress and anxiety and not reading much but hopefully I'll eventually get back into it. Right now I'm just trying to take one day at a time.

message 6: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12171 comments I started back to work on Monday. It was great to see the kids.

We have much lower numbers than we did previously which is good, because keeping a smaller number in the classroom is far healthier and it is complicated, because we clean and disinfect everything after one use, which is difficult staying on top of. Some of the kids wear masks but I wish all of them did, because our numbers continue to go up in our county.

Restaurants and bars reopened, but bars have closed and several restaurants have closed once more.

I'm going in for the biopsy tomorrow and will be glad to get that over with.

Jgrace | 3959 comments All of my positive thoughts are with you, Fran.

I did watch Hamilton! It was great. But as I gave away my normal TV (since I almost never watched it) I had to stream the performance on my laptop. It was a bit like watching the show from the highest seat in the crows nest.

I live at the far end of a county with increasing numbers. Our restaurants had barely reopened before they were shut down again. Shut down for indoor dining anyway.

My son and his fiance were supposed to get married in the middle of this month. They postponed the date until the first week of Oct. The invitations went out last week. The day after I got mine, we were talking about a second cancellation. It just seems too risky. They are discussing options with their chosen venue, but are seriously considering accepting the substantial loss of deposit, and just having a backyard wedding with immediate family. Time will tell.

message 9: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5837 comments Here in Wisconsin, the number of cases increased with many more people in their 20's. Many cases were traced to people going to bars or large family gatherings. We will have a county-wide mask requirement starting next Monday, though most people have already been wearing them in indoor settings.

Our adult daughter visited for the weekend and our son is coming next weekend. This is the first time anyone has been in our house since winter. I used to joke that if no one came over, I would never clean the house, and that was sort of true! So now I had to clean. My husband and I also visited his sister for the first time since shutdown. She lives alone in a small town without any cases that we know of. Still it felt quite adventurous.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12667 comments Well, the Lady from Michigan (decided to not endorse Orange man's "that woman from Michigan":0) has said if numbers keep rising things will shut down again. I am so angry-not at her, but at the idiots who could not/cannot put a mask on or stay home.

We have a camping trip planned to start the 19th, a re-schedule from out cancelled trip in May. I am getting anxious that the State Parks will shut down again...and also stressing that the park will be crowded. We do know of a part of the beach where no one goes, so that will be nice, if we can take the trip

BnB my thoughts are with you today💚

@ Charlotte-it totally floors me that your State and New York are the only States moving cautiously! The 2 places where virus first took hold are the only 2 taking it seriously-WTH! my husband and I were joking that one day we will wake up and 1/2 the popilation in some of the Southern States will be dead. Not a joke, I know but sometimes I just need to get sarcastic in order to survive, it's how I am built 😏. Cheering you on Charlotte for a repeat win!

@JGRace-so sad about your son's wedding, So many couples have had to scramble to cancel/reschedule. Whatever they decide to do, I wish them a lifetime of happiness.

@ Robin - wonderful that you are able to finally see your kids for a bit. I laughed out loud at your housekeeping comment, as I have said the same thing!

@ Rachel-you are so lucky your got in to get a hair cut! My salon just opened and they are rotating days that they work so there are no more than 5 people (3 employees 2 clients) at a time. I could not get in until the 17th. I hope it happens because the other day I nearly chopped it off myself. My hair has not been past my shoulders since my daughter was born. And with the heat we are having it is irritating me constantly. I have become "The Bun Lady", and trust me, it is not a good look for me.

@ Amy-I just cannot fathom having young kids during all this. They need a surprise-perhaps the crazy lady in Michigan can think of some care package items to send🤔

Have not seen Hamilton

message 11: by Theresa (last edited Jul 08, 2020 06:51AM) (new)

Theresa | 15692 comments Housecleaning? What is that? 🙃

@JoAnne - camping is actually ranked safer than grocery shopping. Being outdoors with open air is becoming pretty certainly the safest place to be among other people...maintaining social distance, of course. Only thing safer is staying home.

And it isn't just NY in Northeast that is managing to control, it is a coalition of states...CT NJ NY MA RI NH...

NYC High Line Park is reopening with timed limited entries. With the absence of tourists in the city, mostly locals will get to enjoy its beauty and vistas. A god thing. The photos show lush growth after the long cool spring.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I've only watched Hamilton once so far. Soundtrack has been playing lots both out loud and in my head.
For those doing second, third, fourth watches- take a look at "the bullet" character, and look out for her!
https://screenrant.com/hamilton-secre...

We have a mandatory facemask in all indoor spaces rule here in Oregon. I don't mind it, got a few buffs, a few cloth masks, and work is providing disposable ones. Again, I'm more just tired of everyone talking about it constantly- it doesn't really matter the opinion at this point, as it is a state-mandated rule we must follow. Guests have been largely respectful, which was a pleasant surprise.

Now, I absolutely have to watch it again. I did notice that character but I couldn't figure it out. At one point I thought she might represent his mother. Makes so much more sense now.

Robin P | 5837 comments Wow, that's great about the bullet, I didn't notice it at all. I have had various tunes from the show in my head ever since watching on the weekend. (I pretty much had the soundtrack memorized a couple years back.)

I noticed The Bullet the first time I saw the live show but only during the duels, and rank it as one of my favorite moments. Yet I did not realized the bullet is there at other times.

LibraryCin | 11741 comments Joanne wrote: "I have become "The Bun Lady", and trust me, it is not a good look for me...."

I have very long hair, and i used to put it up in a bun fairly often. When I was in library school, someone there coined it my "librarian bun"! :-)

I don't do buns as often, anymore. Not since I started keeping it "shorter" (Instead of half way down my back, only a few inches longer than my shoulders), as my hair is thin, so it didn't look as good with less hair to make the bun bigger.

It's gotten long enough again, I bet it would look better again. :-)

I was blessed with full thick great hair, if I must say so myself, it is my best physical asset. However, a bun does not work for me as the little wispys always come out within the hour and I start looking like I stuck my hand in the electric wall socket. Also having not colored it in months it is not only streaked with blonde, brown-now the silvers and greys are moving in....my visit to the salon cannot come soon enough!

message 18: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5837 comments I was the first person I knew in 1970 to get my hair cut short. You were supposed to look like Marcia Brady, long straight hair, preferably blond. Mine was dark and frizzy. I would never grow it out again, in spite of hints from men! I like to spend exactly 2 seconds on my hair a day, just fluffing it up a little.

I have brown hair, and (in my opinion), the silver looks really cool! I have chunky streaks behind my ears, so it looks even better when I pull it back and to make those silver streaks noticeable. :-)

message 20: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11741 comments It also occurred to me today that I used to put my hair in a bun when it was wet. I don't usually shower in the mornings, anymore, so that doesn't work as well when it's dry. Another reason I just don't much anymore. I used to do various braids, too, but also when wet. Not so much, anymore.

Theresa | 15692 comments Now that NYC is in Phase 3, the NYPL is slowly reopening. very limited at this point, one branch per borough I think for pick up service. I have paid little attention because I either borrow digital, buy, or work from my massive personal library.

But....I have this print book I borrowed at end of February when I took shelter in a local branch for a bit. I renewed it twice befor library shut down. Still have not read it mostly because Proust was so demanding. Last I had checked, due date extended into July. Thought I should check....extended to mid-October!

I laugh because that is ample time for me to read it. I cry because that means they don't see a return to reasonably full business until fall.

Remember, NYC is well along in reopening with low numbers...and our public library system is still essentially closed.

message 22: by Holly R W (new)

Holly R W | 3146 comments Our library here has opened. I have not yet worked up the nerve to go inside, but my holds have been coming in. There is a drive up window which I used to get the latest Ann Tyler book.

As I had been using a kindle exclusively during this time, it is so very nice to have an actual book in my hands. And, to be able to talk with a librarian!

message 23: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments Our library is but isn't opened. They have a table out front and you let them know your name and they go get your hold. You place your books that you are returning in a box. I haven't taken advantage yet because the two books that I picked up a few days before lock down, I still haven't read....
Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol
Frankissstein: A Love Story

Every time I look their return date has been pushed out to the end of the next month. Right now they are due at the end of Aug.

message 24: by Joanne (last edited Jul 10, 2020 08:22AM) (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12667 comments Our Library is in phase 3 of their re-opening. Drive up Service (you order on line, they call you when ready to be picked up, bring books out to the car and deliver through the passenger window, or back seat. Returns must be put into the night depository slot. They have also opened for computer use and copying and faxing services, but you must make an appointment, have your temperature taken and sign a waiver before entering.

@ Theresa-books can carry the virus for 3 days. So that is why my library is insisting they go into the depository book. Each day they are collected and then put into a bin marked with the date and then not handled until the 72 hours has elapsed. They are then disinfected before being re shelved. I know for my library this is a ton of work, so I cannot imagine what it would be like for branches as large as you have in NYC, probably why they are holding off on taking books back.

This week and last have been hard with our pooch Lola. The heat and all the meds she is taking have done a number on her appetite and she refuses to eat. We had to take her back to the Vet again because her paw swelled to 4X it's normal size-which of course resulted in another pill to try to get down her. The swelling has gone down quite a bit, and the staples come out next week. If
she could talk this animal would be reading me the riot act right now, not a happy camper-LoL.

Aw... I hope Lola feels better quickly! It's so tough with dogs sometimes since they can't talk. I know one of ours goes forever before he shows us he is in pain too. We know if it seems like he's hurting then we know his is really hurting.

message 26: by Rachel N. (new)

Rachel N. | 2251 comments Joanne sending hugs to you and your poor dog Lola. It looks like you might get that salon visit in. I just hope people actually comply with the new mask mandate in Michigan.
My library is letting people in for half an hour maximum, limited number of people at a time. They are also doing curbside pickup which I've done and it worked well. They are having everyone put returns in garbage cans. I think it must be easier to keep track of when they were returned and to quarantine them that way but it was very strange to put a book in a garbage can :-).

LibraryCin | 11741 comments Poor Lola. Hopefully everything gets back to normal soon!

That is a great relief, BnB!

My library is still not taking returns (not my branch, anyway - I think they are piloting this with a few other branches). They have recently opened up curbside, but I haven't tried it yet.

Booknblues | 12171 comments Thanks, everyone. I was quite nervous about this, because it is my third biopsy over the years and there were 2 spots on one side which needed to be biopsied.

That being said the whole experience is most unpleasant, but the doctor could not have been nicer and I was so glad this time to have a female doctor. Staff was lovely giving back rubs at critical moments and calling my husband to pick me up when they realized that office staff had told him to come back too late.
