Now that we have passed the halfway mark of this crazy year, what are some of the best and worst books you have read this year? Any reading plans for the remainder of the year?

message 2: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1839 comments Best: The Gilded Wolves, The City of Brass, The King of Crows, Night Spinner, The Lady's Guide To Petticoats and Piracy, Circe
Worst: Foul Is Fair, Girls Made of Snow and Glass

Rest of the year, I'll be finishing my #RockMyTBR Challenge. I've got a few e-arcs from Netgalley coming up, The Book of Two Ways (Jodi Picoult's new book) and All The Stars and Teeth. I do like to see what I'm in the mood for, but there are a few of 2020 releases (The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Queen of Volts, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue) that I definitely want to read before the end of the year.

- An Elegant Defense: The Extraordinary New Science of the Immune System: A Tale in Four Lives

So far I've read 41/100 books and 9 books behind according to Goodreads. Lol.

I'm 50% done with my mount tbr challenge, but have only manged to finish 5/15 series so far.

Best:

Stine The Necromancer's Library (Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper, #12) by J.L. Bryan Lord of Shadows (The Dark Artifices, #2) by Cassandra Clare The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Worst/books that were very meh:

As for the rest of the year, idk. I don't tend to make tbr lists for myself because I can never stick to them. Lol. I do plan on finishing The Dark Artifices and maybe read some other Cassie Clare books, and finish some other series too.
Two books I am very excited to read though are Home Before Dark by Riley Sager and Paola Santiago and the River of Tears (Paola Santiago #1) by Tehlor Kay Mejia !

Teodora | 359 comments This half-year I've experienced different genres that I normally don't read but are not as bad as I thought they would be. I am definitely a mood reader anyway so that shouldn't be surprising 😂 I've definitely had books I absolutely loved and some that disappointed me and in between, I've read some meh kind of books. Here I am going to name only my best and my worst reads for this half-year!

Best books I've read this year so far aka the books I loved who made me feel a bit obsessed with them:
Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove, #1) by Shelby Mahurin Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1) by Sarah J. Maas Ruthless Gods (Something Dark and Holy, #2) by Emily A. Duncan A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3) by Sarah J. Maas A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1) by Sarah J. Maas If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio The Girl Who Played with Fire (Millennium, #2) by Stieg Larsson Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson The Hating Game by Sally Thorne You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle Beach Read by Emily Henry Kulti by Mariana Zapata Vicious (Villains, #1) by V.E. Schwab Love's Recipe by Mila Nicks The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1) by J.R.R. Tolkien Head Over Heels by Hannah Orenstein

Worst books I've read this year so far aka ugh the books I disliked because they disappointed me:
The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller The Raven and the Dove (The Raven and the Dove, #1) by Kaitlyn Davis Season of Storms (The Witcher #6) by Andrzej Sapkowski Rusty Nailed (Cocktail, #2) by Alice Clayton

For the second half of the year I want to read more books than I possibly can and I am terribly excited about too many of them!

So far this year I am at 57/80 books and 17 books ahead of schedule according to goodreads! I have only managed to finish 3 series so far and only 9 books that I have owned in hardcopy prior to the start of the year.

The best, in no particular order:
Resistance Women by Jennifer Chiaverini Demon Magic and a Martini (The Guild Codex Spellbound, #4) by Annette Marie One of Us Is Next (One of Us Is Lying, #2) by Karen M. McManus 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston The Alloy of Law (Mistborn, #4) by Brandon Sanderson along with so many more that were amazing and close to 5 stars but didn't quite make it.

The worst/most disappointing:
The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 2 Fandemonium (The Wicked + The Divine #2) by Kieron Gillen Written in Blood (Forensic Handwriting Mystery, #2) by Sheila Lowe The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 4 I Kissed a Squirrel and I Liked It by Ryan North Hawkeye, Volume 1 My Life as a Weapon by Matt Fraction Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, #1) by Benjamin Alire Sáenz Butterflies, Flowers, Vol. 1 (Butterflies, Flowers, #1) by Yuki Yoshihara

Legendary (Caraval, #2) by Stephanie Garber and Finale (Caraval, #3) by Stephanie Garber didnt live up to the first book The Toll (Arc of a Scythe, #3) by Neal Shusterman didn't either

For the rest of the year I am going to attempt to read more of what I already own. Also I plan on reading more mysteries and historical fiction again to not burn out on the multiple fantasy genres. There's a ton of books I am hoping to read before the end of the year but I try not to plan too far in advance. I'll also join more challenges then I can possibly ever finish but will have fun with it anyway

Jo, those are some good books! I really need to get to The Gilded Wolves. Keep rocking your TBR!!

Elena, some of your worst ones sound just terrible even from the title! Happy you are enjoying The Shadow and Bone Trilogy so much, we will have to get the thread back running when you get to six of crows.

Lili keep going on that TBR mountain!

Teodora, glad you've stepped outside your reading box and are enjoying it

Thanks! The Gilded Wolves is amazing, definitely recommend. No 5 stars yet, but not really surprised by that, I'm super picky, there's this certain feeling that I get when a book is 5 stars, it's hard to describe but even though I've had books I've really enjoyed this year, none of them have given me that feeling.

I’m sorry you didn’t like it Jo. I didn’t think it was as good as book 1 but I did love it still.

I didn't hate it, I was just disappointed. I think my expectations were too high!

Jo that's completely fair. I don't typically give out a ton of 5 stars either.

Dejah (bookish_behavior) | 3 comments I would say Scythe by Neal Shusterman was my favorite this year, followed closely by The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins, and "The Wrath and the Dawn" series. I don't think I would say that I have a "worst" particularly. But I would say that "The Betrothed" by Kiera Cass might have been my least favorite, but I still did enjoy it quite a bit. I also listened to the first two Harry Potter novels for the first time, and I now see what I was missing.
