Madi (maadee91) | 15 comments This was a series of "Choose Your Own Adventure" books- I can remember there being maybe four or five, although there were probably more. I read them sometime in the late 90s or early 2000s... they're large, paperback books designed for children.

Details throughout the whole series: each scene took up a two-page layout and was illustrated scenes of dangerous-looking situations. There was a monkey guide/sidekick who appeared in (almost) every page, usually looking back at the reader with trepidation from the bottom corner. He had some sort of cutesy name. There were no other protagonists. Every scene gave you 2-5 (ish) options of where you wanted to go, with corresponding page numbers "(if you want to open the dungeon door, turn to page 23")

I remember, specifically:

- One book about a tropical island. There was a jungle with plenty of snakes, a wrecked ship on a beach, and an abandoned lighthouse. I also seem to recall some sort of creepy shack...

- A carnival at nighttime. Clowns, a merry-go-round with live animals. poisons, and a marquee with burnt-out lights.

- One the involved a haunted castle, maybe? I remember the outside of the castle, with ghosts, and a hallway with suits of armor that were actually alive. I think this one also involved a banquet table with lethal foods.

My brother and I were talking about them recently and he rattled off a few more than I can't recall right now. When I Google them, I can't find anything other than the R. A. Montgomery books, which are obviously not what I'm looking for.

Thanks so much!
