Carole-Ann (blueopal) | 145 comments Maybe "The Rings of Saturn" by Isaac Asimov ?

Originally published in 1958 under the pseudonym Paul French, it's a YA-type of adventure featuring David Stark as a space ranger looking for trouble.

:) :) :) But it's probably not what you're looking for.

Hmmm...I can only think of books that sort of cheat, not ones that engage with the science of it

Eva | 968 comments John Varley's Gaea trilogy is set on a Stanford torus orbiting Saturn: Titan.

But I think the best matches for what you're looking for is Saturn Rukh, The Clouds of Saturn, Saturn, and maybe also The Algebraist (set almost entirely on the fictional gas giant Nasqueron, inhabited by gas-dwelling aliens, rings are mentioned once but not gone into much).

Also check out the Night's Dawn trilogy The Reality Dysfunction in which the rings of planets like saturn are harvested/used as fuel for biological starships.

And in the Star Wars universe novels, there are several inhabited ringed planets: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Plan..., including e.g. Geonosis featured in the prequels, and the agricultural world at the start of Rogue One.

Also maybe interesting: The Integral Trees / The Smoke Ring - featuring a civilization living within the rings around a neutron star.

Jemppu | 1735 comments I'd look into works of Kim Stanley Robinson. He tends to be fond of scientifically accurate planetary gymnastics.

Did you check Saturn in fiction on Wikipedia? Or Real astronomical locations in fiction?

David | 9 comments In Great North Road a planet with a ring system on which life evolved plays a rather important role.
