That's about the level of good things that have happened for me in 2020 as well, Ellie 😂

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I liked the first round prompts. I meant to suggest one but time went by too quickly!

I voted for the aty prompt, money prompt, letter z prompt and technological advancement. I did down vote four and the only reason why I picked them is just because the prompt was a little too vague or I felt like I had done the prompt before. Really I wouldn't mind any of these prompts.

message 54: by Alexx (new)

Alexx (dinosaurslayeggs) | 136 comments So excited to be part of this process, I only joined in in the last few rounds last year. Some good suggestions!

I upvoted the book by an author without A, T or Y in their name prompt, the different religion prompt, a book related to a book prompt, the racism or race relations prompt, and a book written from the point of view of a child.

I downvoted three prompts because they didn't really interest me. However, as always, I am happy for whichever prompts win, I always manage to find a book to fit!

message 55: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1582 comments I think A book related to something good that happened in 2020 is one of my favorites. I have read so many good books this year if nothing else I figure I can find a book to relate to one of those.

An alternate history scares me the most because I had a hard time finding something the last time we had it but I also know that sometimes when it is hard I end up with a gem.

All and all a great list to choose from!

message 56: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) Voted 5-up and 3-down. Just didn't want to pick a book because it has a Z on the cover, Don't really have a "hole" in my reading, and haven't thought of anything very positive about 2020 so far.

message 57: by Beth (new)

Beth | 450 comments This was an interesting first list of prompts! I ended up voting for the author whose name doesn't include A, T or Y, racism/race relations and a place you haven't visited.

I voted up 6 and down 2 but there weren't any I couldn't live with. Since I started the group in January, I just accepted everything that you all had picked.

Shelley | 424 comments For good things of 2020...my tickets to Hamilton got cancelled, but I'm finally watching the play of it after years of listening to the soundtrack. The biography the play is based on is on my TBR so I have my planned book for this prompt already even if it's a reject prompt.

July 4th is normally my big summer vacation where I escape after my biggest work deadline of the year (July 1). This year I have Hamilton so I'm taking this as my good thing!

I was gobsmacked by Lin-Manuel's book and also listened to the soundtrack on a loop. Will watch in t-minus one hour. Listen for my fangirl squeals! If the prompt wins, I could read the biography by Chernow or the Elizabeth Schuyler HF novel by Dray both on my TBR list

I watched Hamilton one and a half times yesterday (I had to stop before Burn or my house would have literally filled up to the ceiling with my tears ha!)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments *Quietly whispers* I only watched 10 minutes of Hamilton and turned it off. What am I missing?

message 66: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments I saw it once yesterday. My friend is coming over at 5 pm today to watch Hamilton & have dinner with us. I love the song burn too. I saw a zoom interview yesterday off Sirius XM with all the lead characters. It was so good. The interview is up all weekend I think.

message 67: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Thanks for the suggestion for reading Hamilton for something good that happened in 2020. I want to read it too. I read My Dear Hamilton:A novel of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton by Stephanie Dray & Laura Kamoie. I really liked it. It has helped me with the history in the play.

I think it really helps to familiarize yourself with the music and story. When I saw a musical number on the Tony awards, it just looked like some people dancing around in their underwear and I was less than impressed. Even so, you have six more months to find a bright spot in this miserable year haha

The one that makes me cry is Dear Theodosia.

message 70: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3269 comments I voted 5 up and 3 down, but it was a tough choice!

I voted for: team/organization, technological advancement, racism/race relations, letter Z and author name without A, T or Y.

My downvotes were for the Egyptian museum, something positive in 2020, and "hole" in my reading habits. I can find something for each of those if needed, but they were the ones that I was least excited for.

"It's Quiet Uptown" got me good when I saw it in person. Then last night being able to have the close ups of Phillipa Soo's stone cold face during it, and Lin Manuel's sobbing after she takes his hand.... That definitely got me more than the live version did!

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11192 comments Mod
Oh gosh Quiet Uptown also SLAYS me. Chest heaving, snot running, just sobbing. Philippa Soo is so, so good. I thought that since I had seen it live and knew what was coming, I wouldn't be as impacted by it, but I was SO WRONG. The difference was that I was able to sob in my house without worrying about disturbing anyone else haha

You're right, now that I've seen it up close with all the emotion, this is overwhelming. In the stage directions, which are all in the "Hamiltome" book, it says something like "He breaks" at the end. I saw the show twice and I had binoculars but I never got the total emotion till now.

message 74: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Phillipa Soo was spectacular in the last act. I felt she had the hardest & most emotional songs at the end. There was Burn, It’s Quiet Uptown, then Who Lives,Who Dies,Who Tells Your Story. Her facial expressions during all of these songs moved me. Her acting was spot on.

Don't forget the scream at the end of Stay Alive!

Me too! I saw it live and have listened to the soundtrack more times than I can count and it always gets to me but seeing those closeups killed me.
