This thread is open for discussion beginning July 1st! Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed (mark as a spoiler) in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up if needed!

So I JUST started so I know I'm behind the schedule, I was trying to truck through a buddy read that just was not working for me, so I finally gave up. Now I can devote my brainpower to this!

The time jump in the first chapter kind of freaked me out. I like that we jumped right back into the action but HOO boy five years? I'm stressed.

The audiobook dropped a day early so I'm definitely gonna start this ASAP! But damnnnn! a five year time jump????? That's a heck of a surprise

One thing I want to say is I had NO IDEA what time period this was supposed to be taking place in. I swear I saw someone somewhere say it was in the 1300s and I was like, okay! I know nothing about history so sounds good to me!

But then they mentioned rifles in the second chapter and although my history knowledge is shoddy, I was pretty sure firearms hadn't been invented yet. I looked up when there was a French occupation in Egypt that was mentioned in the first book to try to narrow down a date, which was from 1798-1801. Nahri said Egypt had just been taken over by France in book one, so it's probably safe to say that was in 1798 or early 1799, putting the events at the beginning of this book at the latest in 1804.

I don't know if anyone else cares, or if you all know your history better than me and already had a general idea of the timeline, but here's your fun fact for the day!

It's taking me while to get into this, just like the first book, but I know that once I let myself get sucked into the world again I'll be GONE and probably finish it within a couple of days.

To be completely honest, I pretty didn't even think about the timeline and I just ignored the mention of rifles. Good spot! I completely missed that.

I just finished Chapter 6 and a few things I'm shookt about:

- That Nahri and Muntadhir actually consummated the marriage.

- I was 1000000000000000000% on the Muntadhir/Jamshid train since they were implied in book 1 but that scene with Nahri and Muntadhir had my jaw dropping (was not expecting them to even touch either at all lol) and had my mind going into multishipper territory......................but then I got to the next bit where it's a sAD FREAKING SCENE WITH MUNTADHIR AND JAMSHID and I thought "nahri who?"

- Ali being a teacher for kiddos. I wasn't really shookt by that. I was more "awww"-ing about it than anything else.

- also not shookt about this but I'm still meh about Dara. maybe I'll care more about him later on in the book

Up to Chapter 19 (wow, I'm reading this a lot faster than the first book): !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG (view spoiler)[ This was 1000000% hinted at in the first book but I ignored it cause I didn't know if I imagined it or not. BUT OMG IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED. Jamshid is Nahri's brother and I am so goddamn happy about it because more family for herrrr! And also I'm just a huge fan of brother and sister dynamics. It warms my cold little heart. I'm still wary of Manizheh bc mothers in fiction nowadays are usually either evil or dead. And she's not dead so I'm watching out for the other alternative lol! Really hope she'll be cool in the future though, I'm on my guard emotionally in case she turns out to be bad. (hide spoiler)]

I'm on Chapter 27 and woah there's a lot of warring loyalties. I'm anticipating reading the climax.

Also Chapter 25 eerily reminded me of the pandemic because of this one line.

Okay so I finished this... and let me tell you the last 25% was a lot. I want to dive into the last book straight away but at the same time I don't want this series to end.

Oh man I'm really behind on updating threads! I completed this a while back as well and omg XD @Emily, I was so miserable in the last 25%.

(view spoiler)[I CAN'T BELIEVE I WAS MADE TO SUFFER BY MUNTADHIR. I was so distraught by it, I was literally just sobbing and laying down in a fetal position. And as soon as I thought it would be over....... ?????????????? he lives. And I'm relieved but I'm pissed that I was put though that trauma lmao.

Also, ngl, pissed at Dara but kinda feel bad for him. Someone just pls kill the guy again and keep him dead. He needs a REST ffs. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ I would think that Illuminae would've prepared you for the miraculous healing from the brink of death. But still I'm happy that Muntadhir lives even the guy made me want to kill him a couple of times (probably cause I'm so pro Ali).

At this point I hope Chakraborty doesn't make Nahri and Dara endgame cause the guys needs to rest in peace and I feel as though there is just too much between them that makes me not want to support their relationship. Which is weird cause normally I love their dynamic but I think it had more to do with the insta-love at the beginning of their relationship that made it very unbelievable to me. I ship Nahri with Ali more so than Nahri with Dara. (hide spoiler)]

And I really doubt Nahri and Dara are endgame. I feel like things broke there that can never be repaired. I would be really surprised if they end up together. I wouldn't say that I ship Nahri and Ali together? But if it happens, I wouldn't complain. I'm pretty much neutral on the Nahri ship lmao
