I read an historical novel (could be fantasy) where the male character sailed with an African friend to Europe and leaned how to smelt ore.
I am desperate to recall the name....
can anyone help? I think the man was British and he ended up meeting with his brother who became a sailor. It could be Master of the game by Sidney Sheldon...
