This is the thread where you can submit a task idea for the 50 Point Task contest. The thread is now open for submissions and will close at Midnight Eastern time on July 5. Voting will start the next day July 6 and will close at the end of the day on July 12. If the moderators determine that the vote is close, a 3-day runoff poll will be held. The person whose idea gets the most votes will host the 50 point task for the Summer Challenge.

The 50 point task will require:
1. Only 3 options.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages. Your task idea may require a higher page threshold but this must be disclosed in your entry.
4. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.
6. No “free choice” options will be allowed. This is a challenge, so tasks that have no element of challenge do not fit the purpose.
7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.

Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.

* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and he/she must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.

The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll. The poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.

Please include your Readerboard name and a title for your task. The entries will be listed by Readerboard name and task title in the poll. Please include only one task idea entry per post.

PLEASE DO NOT comment on people's entries in this thread - this is for submissions only - you will be able to comment when voting begins. Comments will be deleted.

Toss Away the Could Haves and Should Haves

In the U.S., the third Saturday in July is Toss Away the “Could Haves” and “Should Haves” Day. Let’s accomplish one of each, then toss the rest away!

Read one book for each of the 3 items below. For each of the 3 books state which option you chose.

1. Accomplish a could have.

A. Read a book you abandoned/never finished. State when you abandoned the book.

B. Read one of the ten books that have been on your TBR shelf the longest. If you don’t use a Goodreads TBR shelf, you can read the book that has been on your physical bookshelf or a TBR list of another sort the longest. State when this book was added to your to-read shelf/list.

2. Accomplish a should have.

A. Read a book from 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. State the number of the book on the list in your post.

B. Read a book you were supposed to read in school but didn’t (or didn’t finish). State the grade or class you were in when you missed out on reading this book.

3. Toss the rest away.

A. Dive into summer and read any book mentioned in any of the 8 Goodreads Summer Reading blog posts. State which post mentions your book.

B. Let serendipity guide you. Choose any book you have rated 5 stars and read something on its "similar books" list. To see similar books, go to your book’s Goodreads page and click on the "See similar books…" link. It’s located in the right column just below the cover images of books readers also enjoyed. When you post, state which book you rated 5 stars.

And the Worst Picture Award goes to…

In the 40th Golden Raspberry Awards (aka the Razzies), announced on 8 February 2020, the stand-out “winner” was Cats, The Movie, based on the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

1. The initial trailer, released in July, was described by one critic as “terrifying and insane, like a drug-induced nightmare made real”. One of the major criticisms was related to the appearance of the characters, along with their variable scale to the backgrounds.

Read a book with a cat on the cover. It can be a big cat, a house cat or a wild cat, or anything in between, but it must be identifiably feline – unlike the cast of the movie! REQUIRED: Post the cover.

2. The movie itself was soundly panned by critics across the globe when it finally came out in December. The UK Daily Telegraph reviewer described it as “a sinister, all-time disaster from which no one emerges unscathed” and awarded it Zero stars. It gleaned 9 nominations and 6 awards at the 2020 Razzies, beating a previous “cat” movie, Catwoman, which was nominated for 7 Razzies in the 25th awards in 2005, and won 4.

Read a book which includes a four-letter word in the title, and at least one of the following numbers in the page count: 4, 6, 7 and 9.

3. Cats took home Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Screenplay and Worst Combo. Catwoman also gleaned Worst Picture, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay, along with Worst Actress for Halle Berry, who made Razzie history by becoming the first actress to pick up her award in person.

Read a book written by a single author who shares a name with one of the 2020 or 2005 winners or nominees in one of the 7 categories listed above. Names must match exactly, but can be in any position. REQUIRED: State the name, year and award category of the nominee.

Black Lives Matter

In the past month there have been numerous protest marches throughout the United States and other countries to protest the deaths of black men and women at the hands of police officers. Many of the protests point to systemic racism within the police departments of major cities.

Book 1: To educate ourselves on the issues

Read a book from one of these lists:
An Anti-Racist Reading List: 20 Highly Rated Nonfiction Books by Black Authors
Black Lives Matter Library
#BlackLivesMatter Reading List

Book 2: Who died?

Two of the most recent deaths are George Floyd who died when a police officer in Minneapolis knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, and Breonna Taylor who was shot in her apartment in Louisville by police who entered on a no-knock warrant while she and her boyfriend were in bed.

Read a book by an author with first or last name GEORGE, FLOYD, BREONNA or TAYLOR. The names can be in either position but must match exactly (Elizabeth George works, Georges Simenon does not.)

3) Black is Beautiful

Read a book with a cover that is at least 60% black (percentage can be verified with TinEye if not obvious).

Iulia (iuliadt) | 142 comments The Durrells in Corfu

The Durrells (or The Durrells in Corfu) is a 26-episode British comedy-drama series, aired between 2016 to 2019, inspired by Gerald Durrell's three autobiographical books about his family's four years (1935–1939) on the Greek Island of Corfu.

This task is meant to celebrate this four-season lovely comedy, as well as the 3 books that the TV series is based on.

Book 1. Womanhood
Read a book from the list Best Adult Female Friendship Books, in order to honor Louisa and Margot, the 2 women (mother and daughter) in the Durrell family. The list contains 628 books of various genres, plenty to choose from in order to discover beautiful relationships.
Required: state the page on which the book you chose is featured on the list

Book 2. Brotherhood
Read a book displaying on the cover: a rifle (not a revolver) or an animal (any animal), to honor brothers Leslie and Gerry. Leslie develops a passion for shooting guns, while Gerry loves all animals (he brings home any living animal he can find, even organizes a zoo).
Required: post the cover.

Book 3. The Prodigal Son
Read a book written by a single author whose first and last initial (middle initial can be ignored) are found in one of the following words: Justine, Balthazar, Mountolive, Clea (names of the books in the tetralogy The Alexandria Quartet, written by Lawrence Durrell).

This is to honor Lawrence Durrell, the eldest son, who's pictured in the series as an aspiring writer, keeping himself away from regular working in the family, while focusing on his writing. In real life, Lawrence Durrell does become an author!

The 3 books must total at least 750 pages. General rules for the challenge apply.

Throw a (virtual or not) six-sided die. State the number in your post.

Book 1: Read a book where the title has the same number of words as your throw.

Book 2: Read a book where the title has one more or one less word than book 1. Only titles, not subtitles. All words count.

Book 3: Read a book where the title has one more or one less word than book 2, but moving in the same direction as book 2. For example, if your number was 3, and you chose a 4-word title for book 2, then book 3 must have a 5-word title.

If your number is 1 or 6, wrap around to the other end. For example, if you number is 1, then the next book can have either 2 or 6 words in the title.

Additional requirement: My books are from many different genres, fiction or non-fiction. Thus, all three books must be from different MPG major groups, for example, scifi, fantasy, mystery, history, non-fiction, etc. For non-fiction, there may be a sub group, specifying the field. State the MPGs in your post.
