SOLVED. Short Story: Child Kills Another Child. [s]

I'm looking for the name of a story about the aftermath of a child shooting another child. The story is told from the POV of the shooter as they fail to process their grief and has to listen to adults gossiping about him not crying and what kind of monster he must be.
Does this vague description ring any bells? The story was written quite a while ago; I remember reading it in school.

A longshot: Rage by Richard Bachman (Stephen King). It's a school shooting told from the POV of the shooter, but as it's occurring, not in the aftermath.
