Anna (yuma_writes) | 11 comments Help! My niece is in love with a certain book and I'm looking for it so I can secretly buy her a bunch of similar works for her birthday. I need to track down this book to accurately anticipate what she might like.

PLOT: oh, this is the tricky part. From what my niece once enthusiastically described, it's a book set in the present or near future. For reasons I'm unclear, the MC (gender unknown to me) escaped to some sort of subterranean world and accidentally fell, dropped, into a new world/reality. I believe a portion of the book dealt with the MC trying to escape it.

WRITTEN: 2018? 2019? I saw her clutching the bedraggled thing early last year.

COVER: trade paperback, dark (black?), with 3 words only as the title stacked on top of each other in equal width. Basically, I think the title typography was the cover art.

TITLE: I'm embarrassed to say all I remember was it was a play on words about "falling" or "down" The title is only 3 words.

AUTHOR: female? (facepalm) I'm sorry.

READING LEVEL: Tweens or Teen. My niece is 10, but has been reading middle school level books.

I hope this information helps. I spent the past week searching Google Images for book covers. I know I'll recognize it by the cover. If we weren't in quarantine or the city shut down, I would've gone to bookstores and search the shelves!

Crystal | 326 comments Gosh this sounds like such a sweet idea! Is there any way you can secretly ask her mom the name of the book? Her parents would probably know the title and that might be the fastest way of tracking it down.

I don't know many tween stories but what's currently popping in my head are The City of Ember, Watership Down, something Alice in Wonderland related? Doubt any of these are it though - hopefully someone else will know the book you're searching for

Anna (yuma_writes) | 11 comments Sadly, unlike my niece, she isn't much a reader and vaguely only recalled her reading Harry Potter, which she read starting at 9 and has two more books to go. Definitely not those. Haha. The book in question was recently written in the last 3 years and definitely not a tome like Harry Potter. :)

Anna, do you think it's a retelling of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"?

Perhaps searching on Worldcat.org might help. It's good for finding children's and old books. For example:

https://www.worldcat.org/advancedsear... > Keyword: falls world ?? | Subject: fantasy | 1990-2019 ?? | Juvenile | Fiction | Book | English

Anna (yuma_writes) | 11 comments Hi, it didn't sound like it was a retelling, however, Worldcat sounds intriguing! Thank you!

Crystal | 326 comments I came across this book We All Fall Down which came out in 2017 - but it's a comic/fully illustrated book and not a novel. The plot sounds similar...though it's highly unlikely it's this one either

Nadia | 60 comments Could be a stretch, but... Gregor the Overlander?
Gregor the Overlander (Underland Chronicles, #1) by Suzanne Collins

No, but ooooh, that book looks intriguing too! The cover in question has no illustrations of characters. Just the title in fancy text.

Jessica (Goldenfurpro) (goldenfurproductions) | 453 comments My first thought was the Tunnels series, but the title doesn't fit and it's probably not new enough.

You're right, it's not it. HOWEVER, that being said, I am blatantly going to steal all these suggestions because, wow! You guys are giving me great prospects for gifts! Thank you!

Even if it's not that Ursula Vernon/T. Kingfisher is probably an author your niece will love.

Anna (yuma_writes) | 11 comments Oh boy, no. I really regret not remembering. Darn brain.....

Crystal | 326 comments Does your niece own the book? If it's lying around her house somewhere maybe you can send her mom/dad on a mission to sneakily look around for it and then tell you the name

Sadly, she borrowed it, lent it to someone else who also, well, let's just say the chain of custody is now a pile of spaghetti. LOL

Adele | 1431 comments The story doesn't sound quite right, but the cover kind of does so I thought I would put this out there: Humans, Bow Down Humans, Bow Down by James Patterson

Crystal | 326 comments xD oh god! But don't worry we'll keep hunting for it here

message 22: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 326 comments Hahaha yass! I was waiting for a whole week for you to come online on Goodreads

I found it on google images believe it or not - so happy and good luck with your niece's present! (Let us know what book you buy in the end)

message 23: by Ember (new)

Ember | 36 comments Obviously you’ve found your book, but I’d maybe recommend checking out the Beyonders trilogy by Brandon Mull as a gift idea? It has a sort of similar concept, and the way the mc gets into the new world is absolutely hilarious. (Or honestly, any of his books lol, they’re really good)

message 24: by Michele (new)

Michele | 2488 comments Also, when you visit the Goodreads page for that book, look at the "READERS ALSO ENJOYED" section in the upper right. That might give you other ideas.

Now that you know what it is, you might also post to this group's other thread Suggest books for me :)

message 25: by Anna (new)

Anna (yuma_writes) | 11 comments Sorry for my lack of reply! I am taking notes and buying all the books and thanks to all of you, my niece now has over a dozen books for her birthday. Thank you, everyone for making this a great birthday!
