Angie ☯ | 3111 comments I did update the tasks tab to automatically mark off the tasks we use based on the Main Round sheet. You can check to see if you have already used a task on the "Task" sheet. I have been using the Tasks by Type to choose my tasks.

I hope this is helpful to everyone.

Jenny | 8072 comments Ohh, the Illuminae Flles are sooo good. I have yet to read the last one, but it is on my list.
Abbey, if you like cozies, you may like One Grave Too Many (Diane Fallon Forensic Investigation, #1) by Beverly Connor . Not a cozy per se, but it has some wonderfully fun characters. It is one of my go to comfort book series. I read them once every couple of years.

Anna, I added Chain of Gold to my TBR list.

I haven't read that one, I'll have to add it to my list. I have only read one other book by her so far and it was Angel Falls by Kristin Hannah . While i enjoyed that one, i definitely enjoyed this book so much more. It really sucked me in and kind of had me guessing how things were gonna turn out the whole time. I liked that she based it off of something that really did happen during the time with the women joining the resistance and what not.

bamaace83 | 965 comments I'll jump on the bandwagon. I actually liked The Nightingale tons better than Winter Garden. It could be the time in my life that I read each book but the Nightingale I thought kept my attention more and I felt like I was right there with the characters a little more. I also enjoyed The Great Alone. I just added the other one to my wishlist.

message 508: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8072 comments Winter Garden is based on real history as well. One I am pretty glad I didn't have to live through.
I will add The Nightingale to my list.

I am reading about brave bunnies right now, and no it is not Watership Down. The Eleventh Ring (Bartholomew the Adventurer, #1) by Tom Hoffman . It is a fun read for a Sunday evening.

And, for those of you who have not yet read Watership Down (Watership Down, #1) by Richard Adams , get off of your collective butts, and grab that book!!!

It is on my top ten books ever list. Just saying.

message 509: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments I just marked both to read. Hopefully, I'll get to them this month. I did have to add a couple short books to the spreadsheet because I needed short reads for a couple tasks over the weekend that I could knock out fast. I have some longer books planned also and I'm trying to find a really good long book to add in.

Jade aka MrsTosh (mrstosh) | 787 comments Aww Watership Down (Watership Down, #1) by Richard Adams gave me nightmares so years as a child both the book and the film, definitely a classic mind and worth a read.

Jade aka MrsTosh (mrstosh) | 787 comments I just finished One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) by Janet Evanovich no way is it every going to be a classic nor is it a work of genius but it was so funny, I laughed aloud the whole way through the book, which is what I need at the moment. This world and all the craziness going on is making me crave some light refreshment....I get plenty of this from Stephanie Plum and co.

That series is pure comedic gold! Some of the things are so out there that it's just hilarious how she goes about her bounty hunting. I always return to a book that series when I need a laugh or a book for a challenge (since there are so many, and I know I'll at least laugh while reading it regardless). Great choice for this crazy time!

Thanks for the suggestion, this looks just up my alley! Just placed the ebook on hold (with a short wait time), I'm excited for this. I love the Temperance Brennan series with a forensic anthropologist (which are vastly different than the TV show 'Bones' loosely based on the books) but I find that line of mystery fascinating. Those books aren't traditional cozies either, but they are a sort of gap/bridge between a cozy and thriller because they have elements of both.

It's hilarious, read a few of them back in 2012 but haven't finished the whole series so I thought this would be a good time to recap :)

message 517: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8072 comments For some reason I have never read Evanovich before. I think I have one on a shelf somewhere. I will look, and put it higher in the queue.

I could use a giggle.

message 518: by Angie ☯ (new)

Angie ☯ | 3111 comments That series is really fun. Not at all realistic, but good for a lot of laughs! I may need to re-read the ones I've read and try to do the whole series!

message 520: by Alissa (new)

Alissa | 771 comments The two books I would recommend from my 1st round of reading are, Invisible Man, Got the Whole World Watching A Young Black Man's Education by Mychal Denzel Smith great for the times happening in the world and Hidden Valley Road Inside the Mind of an American Family by Robert Kolker a great book about mental health in a way that is easy to digest.

I also loved the Nightingale when I read it a couple of years ago and Watership Down lots of years ago. I might re-read it. I also read Just Mercy but since a couple people already recommended it I decided on others I read.

If Oprah’s Book Club is stopping you from reading Hidden Valley Road don’t let it. This latest return of her book club has not disappointed me yet. I have read 3 of the 5 and plan to read the other two when they are available. The 3 I’ve read have been 4 stars.

I have never forgiven Oprah for recommending The Bridges of Madison County, when she started her book club. I should probably just get over it. Teehee.

Both of those books look very good. More to add to the never ending list...(not complaining).

In true Stephen King style it is very weird and messes with your head!

It is so hard with everything that is going on in the world right now, I am in the UK and were still on lockdown to a sense but I am back at work and places are opening up again which has definitely helped with my reading. I got into a right slump a few weeks back, nothing peeked my interstate all.

That is exactly what I am doing, it's too much to read in one sitting, I need time to digest what's going on.

I just saw that this was released. The cover is gorgeous. I know nothing of it. Yet.

message 533: by Abbey (new)

Abbey (abbeyhauser) | 210 comments 2 Questions:

1. What is the determination on Characters being counted for a word? I have a book that works with the author, but the MC sons works for F and H too, they are just not has main as the MC, but still pretty prevalent in the book. Either way the book works, but figured I'd check for the other options too. I feel like I read something about it, but I can't find that part of the rules at the moment (but it's early and I've been up since 6am to teach a fitness class for work, so my brain's a bit slow lol)

2. Would I be able to get a verification on the book Calling All Minds: How to Think and Create Like an Inventor? It's MG, 228 pages and I found it on AR (but couldn't find word count). However, as I got started with it I realized it's got history writing interspersed with some craft/invention instructions (in recipe-ish format). So then I started doubting if it works. It's definitely got lots of regular writing and stories in it, there is just a tutorial at the end of every chapter I wasn't counting on being there lol.

No sweat if that one doesn't work, I'll finish it regardless, but wanted to check once I realized the format is different than I thought.

Thanks!

message 534: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8072 comments A character works if it is more than just something like "Susan the neighbor drove by in her new car." If it is integral to the story in any way, the name would work for the spell-out.

I will look at your other book later.

message 535: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8072 comments Abbey, I just looked at the "look inside" preview of your book on Amazon, and I think it is probably just fine. There is a lot of text. If you see more diagrams than text in the chapters that weren't shown on Amazon, then maybe skip it, but it looked good to me from what I saw.

message 536: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8072 comments Abbey, I goofed. The book does not have enough words for one classified as children in the MPG tags. Sorry, my bad. Apparently you didn't click through to get the page count on AR, and it is just shy of 40,000 words.

Frenzied Fiction

The Wizard

These are two audibooks I'm prob going to listen to next. I'm assuming these won't count because default is under 160, right?

message 538: by Jenny (new)

Jade aka MrsTosh (mrstosh) | 787 comments I see some good books on the spreadsheet the round ;)

I noticed you're reading It by Stephen King @Jenny one of my favourites, I still have my original hardback I got in the 80's. I go back to it time and time again.

Would be interested to see what you think of the The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley @Alissa, it keeps coming up on my recommended and I an intrigued. Let me know what you think when you finish it.

Happy reading ladies :0)

It's just shy on pages. I know why we bumped it up but it's getting me this time around! Luckily her second book, The Penderwicks is good to go.

Me too. That's how I ran into Tana French's books. In the Woods was a gorgeous cover, and the story was even better. Then there is Nothing to See Here, which is one of the ugliest covers I have seen, but the story is delicious. I think designing covers has got to be a difficult job. But probably a fun one.
