Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12864 comments Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to point out to you all that we are currently passing through the Republic of Ireland, and what a lovely place it is to visit too!

As you can see out of your windows, the vegetation here is much more abundant than it was back in Wales, giving the surroundings a dark, brooding look, which I'm sure you will agree is worth a second glance...

description

And if you continue to look out your windows, you will see that we are crossing the border into Northern Ireland, which has some lovely scenery of its own...

description

I'm sure you'll all agree both parts of Ireland are well worth lingering in...

I am fairly certain we still have an extra passenger or two aboard for this stop... maybe we should get them to read a book for our team in lieu of a train ticket..? ;)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I think I just lost my ability to think or talk..

Yeah, we should start asking for books in exchange of a ticket...

And why do I suddenly want to read Darker?

I bring my ticket price, don't worry!

Wanna drink a whiskey whilst we admire the scenery ml

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I am so grumpy today.

I stayed up till 4 AM reading.

I'm a sucker for those angsty type mm romance. And I got exactly that with Finley. Sure, it was mushy. But they knew their time together was limited, that their hearts would break again (and this time worse) and they did it anyway.

The result? I cried the whole time, exactly like I love to do and felt all the feelings (probably more than the characters) and want to read it all over again.

So now I am facing two choices... read the second book and hope for a cameo (it's a different MC couple) oooooor, do the selfish approach and re-read the last 60 pages or so.....

Maybe I'll do both LOL

Glad the book lived up to expectations Sonia! I stayed up way past my usual bedtime last week when I started The Art of Fielding, but didn't make it to anywhere near 4 am. I need my sleep too much!

I'm really enjoying my current print book. The audio one is so-so, but am almost done with that, and the one I have lined up next looks promising :)

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 949 comments So question
Does something negative happen if we read over our monthy estimate?
The rules talk about reading under, but I did not see anything for over. However the tracking in the official team spreadsheet had a tab that made me wonder.
Just asking as I have not been reading the really long books I had expected, so my book count is higher that I had estimated.
900 pages for 1 long book or divided into 3 shorter ones. *shrugs*

That question has cropped up in other teams already, and the answer seems to be no, not this time. It's hard at the best of times to predict exactly how much you'll read, and some people will read more and others less than expected. It would be a little different if everyone in in a team signed up for one book and then all read 15 each, but as is, I think some fluctuation is to be expected :)

message 516: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12864 comments I've usually signed up for less books than I have this time, and then always ended up reading extra to make up for people who couldn't manage all of theirs (during TT one of our team had signed up for an insane 17 books a week. she was more than happy to pass some on! lol).

The hardest part for me this time if figuring out how much print I'll be able to squeeze in among the audio, with 4 of us in our tiny little house full time!

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 949 comments Ok thanks Sammy

It is hard to estimate normally, and these last few months and now with things just so different it has been even harder.
I get the too many in a small house.
We are about to gain another as he can no longer stay where he has been for the this whole thing. Added chaos and less space, but better he will be here and safer.

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 913 comments I always put down what I average per month but then in a fast moving challenge I end up reading faster for some reason

message 519: by Plethora (last edited Jun 21, 2020 10:17AM) (new)

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 2239 comments I'm struggling with two print books right now and almost no time to read print. And one is a library loan (kindle) that is due in a few days and I'm the least through it as 12% the actual paperback I'm at about 50% probably.

I was expecting the kindle read to be a much quicker read for me, but it hasn't turned out that way, which is a little odd based on the subject. We will see if it picks up.

I struggled through one of my recent audio's, it just wasn't what I was expecting and I guess the true humor of it just wasn't my cup of tea. So I was glad that finally finished. 13 hours of audio is painful if you aren't enjoying it. (Kill The Farm Boy)

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 949 comments Linda C wrote: "I always put down what I average per month but then in a fast moving challenge I end up reading faster for some reason"

Yeah!
But the difference in how challenges are structured and how points are awarded.
You know, am I going to read 6 book between 250 and 350 pages or 2 that are 800 to 900 pages. Makes a BIG difference in total number of books a month. In the under 350 pages, especially with audio or YA book I get thru 4 most weeks, but something heavy that is 1000 pages and I am reading is likely to take me a week or more.
Also, for me when I looked over the last few months my numbers had been allover the place. Made it hard to estimate what I might do in the future.

My husband loves Kevin Hearne and he struggled through that one too. I've been meaning to read it myself or listen on audio, but I'm not so sure based on it's stellar reviews.

I was thinking the same.
But it makes me sad, because I really liked the Iron Druid series.

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 380 comments I definitely think I'm going over on the amount I read a month, but I think part of it is free time with telecommuting for now and being excited for the challenge. I find that as the game progresses some people will taper off on how much they read.

Well maybe you'll still be happy with his new series - Ink & Sigil set in the Iron Druid universe that comes out in a few months.

Perhaps the co-author thing for this book just didn't work.

message 526: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I signed up for 10 books a month, I think, because with my mom passing away in March and all the emotional falling down that issued, plus the pandemics, I was just... unable to focus on a book... that all started to change with May's read-a-thon, so, off course, I am back to books with a vengeance, and managed to put 8 under my belt in the first 9 days of the challenge. I won't keep up with that number... I think... because some of them were smaller books, but, my average for wheels is around 4 a week, and I mostly read on the weekends, so I am not that ahead... I think...

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12864 comments You know... the imagery Sonia posted above is definitely appropriate, considering that we're just arriving on the windswept West coast of Scotland, a beauty spot often overlooked by holiday makers.

But between the rolling hills and valleys and the beautiful blue waters, this is definitely a place to put on the itinerary!

Also, while we are here, we're just a stone's throw from Wigtown, the village in Scotland that boasts more bookshops than any other businesses. Very much worth a visit (we went a couple of years ago, and loved it!), it is also the town where the author of The Diary of a Bookseller and Confessions of a Bookseller has his shop.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 949 comments Lovely scenery, thank you VERY much for pointing it out Sammy.

Is it getting hot in here or is it just me?

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12864 comments I'm down to my last planned book for this round, which is just a short print one, but I've decided - rather than reading extra books for this round - I'm going to get stuck into Infinite Jest. I figure that it's such a monster, that if it happens to not fit next round's letters, it can very easily get put aside and finished during the one after, lol.

I'm actually hoping for a "Z" word next, as I've been looking forward to reading The Shadow of the Wind, and it would seem wasteful to not use it for the Z, lol.

ha... well I refused to pre-order a book I knew would be in KU.... that's the only reason I had to wait... because had I ordered, it probably would download at midnight....

I checked it... a lot... it wasn't ready to grab, so I forced myself to go to sleep.... Not an easy task, I'll tell you. I wasn't that wired up since I forced myself to go to sleep by the end of chapter 6 of crash and burn.

Yes, nothing can't compare to Ty& Zane quality... but the feeling was the same.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Annnnd I'm done!

Damn it... why did it have to be so tiny!

Anyway... now I am lost and have no clue what to read.

Of course, I might regret having read them this week, because one of the call signs was Utah... but I also dislike the guy so much, that I rather not use it .

On that side note, Artemis Fowl can be used for X too (C: Nguyen Xuan) if you need an extra one.

If you want the Z's then you should wish for " Pub Quizzing" or the slightly less difficult one of "Zoom Calls" however I think I would prefer the more variation of letters with "Trip to the Zoo" although the more I look at it that is a lot of T's and O's.
